The church in Sânpetru was built in 1794, replacing a medieval basilica from the 14th century, which was demolished after its tower had collapsed twice. The new church was unusually provided with a western chancel and a tower was built in 1817. The interior was endowed in neoclassical style, from organ and scarcely decorated pillars to the column- altar in the chancel. Only ruins are still preserved from the exterior and second curtain wall. But the first fortification wall stands complete even today, preserving its five towers and the two level rooms built on its interior. On the southern side of the assembly the old school and the old town hall were erected. The 13th century pre-reformation chapel was fortified in the 15th century by addition of two levels. Valuable mural paintings from 1400 decorate the chapel’s walls. Place and surroundings Sânpetru was founded in the 13th Century in the so-called Țara Bârsei, in a valley of the Carpathian arc. For centuries the village was on the edge of both Hungarian and Austrian sphere of influence and it was therefore exposed to attacks much more than other settlements in Transylvania. The imposing fortified church in the middle of the village repelled many invasions. Yet, even this fortress could not stop the most dreaded enemy: the Black Dead. Legends tell of a mysterious stranger, an old woman dressed in black who was seen in Sânpetru every time before the outbreak of the plague. Beyond all legends, the strict measures that were taken to prevent the disease were historically certified. According to the monograph of the village, the inhabitants were prohibited from working their land on the same days as the people from the neighboring villages. Foreigners were denied access and breaking this rule could even have fatal outcomes for them. Even the coins were boiled, disinfected and pierced. Biserica evanghelică fortificată din Sânpetru este un ansamblu de monumente istorice aflat pe teritoriul satului Sânpetru, comuna Sânpetru. În Repertoriul Arheologic Național, monumentul apare cu codul 41934.03. Ansamblul este format din patru monumente: Biserica evanghelică (cod LMI BV-II-m-A-11817.01) Capela Corpus Christi (cod LMI BV-II-m-A-11817.02) Incintă fortificată interioară, cu turnuri, fosta locuință fortificată de pe latura sudică, încăperi pentru provizii (cod LMI BV-II-m-A-11817.03) Incintă fortificată exterioară, cu turnuri, zwinger (cod LMI BV-II-m-A-11817.04) Biserica evanghelică fortificată din Sânpetru a fost ridicată în 1794 pe temelia unei biserici mai vechi, demolate complet când turla acesteia s-a prăbușit pentru a doua oară. Clădirea clasică a fost completată în 1817 cu o nouă turlă. Interiorul bisericii este organizat în mod unitar în stil clasic, de la orgă la pilierii decorați cu parcimonie și la altarul cu coloane din cor. Din cele 3 rânduri de ziduri de fortificație din secolul al XV-lea se mai păstrează câteva resturi din zidul exterior și din cel de-al doilea. Zidul interior este păstrat integral cu cinci turnuri și bastioane și cu clădirile andosate din interior, cu două niveluri, destinate păstrării proviziilor. Mai târziu, în interiorul zidului, spre sud, au fost integrate școala veche și primăria veche. Turnul nordic a apărut prin supraconstruirea unei capele din secolul al XIII-lea, dinaintea Reformei Protestante în care se păstrează un ciclu de fresce în culori luminoase care datează din jurul anului 1400. În biserică se găsește o orgă construită în 1826 de Johann Thois. În 1908 a fost transformată de Karl Einschenk iar în 2010 claviatura a fost reparată și restaurată de Albert Jószef.

Brassótól É-ra, 7 km-re található Barcaszentpéter település (középkori nevén Szentpéter ill. Petersberg, ma Sânpetru, melynek központjában erődtemplom magasodik. A községet 1415-ben és 1425-ben említik, 1600-ban tatárok dúlták fel. 1611-ben Báthory Gábor a falu határában ütközött meg Brassó szövetségesével, Ráduj vajdával. 1658-ban Szentpétert újból a tatárok pusztították el. 1706-ban Pekri táborozott itt kurucaival, és egy alkalommal a Brassóból kémszemlére kijött, majd Szentpéterben lerészegedő rácokat megtámadta és sokat közülük levágva, egész Brassóig űzte őket. 1849-ben febr. 4-én Szentpéternél ütköztek meg először a székelyek az oroszokkal, kiket a fenyegetett Brassó hívott segítségül. A község legfőbb nevezetessége templomerődje, mely a Barcaság egyik legépebb ilyen jellegű épülete. A település Szent Péternek szentelt templomát először 1240-ben említik. Ekkor IV. Béla a falu egyházának jövedelmét a ciszterci rendnek adományozta. A templom körüli erődítmény kiépítése a 15-16. század fordulójára tehető. A 6 erős védőtoronnyal ellátott hatszögű erőd két külső fala között egykor széles, mély sánc volt, melybe a Dirbák vizét vezették. A jól kiépített erősségnek köszönhetően a 17. században a tatároknak fent leírt kétszeri dúlásával dacolva sikerrel megvédték magukat e község lakói. A középkori templomot 1793-94-ben sajnos teljesen lebontották, a helyébe felépített új templomnak a régiből csak némely emléktöredéke maradt fenn. Az egykori erődfalak napjainkban is magasan állnak. A templomhajótól északkeletre fekvő bástyát kápolnának nevezik. Feltehetően keresztelési kápolna lehetett. Oldalfalait és gótikus keresztboltozatát 14-15. századi freskók borítják. http://varak.hu
