Mersch Castle in central Luxembourg is one of the castles belonging to the Valley of the Seven Castles. Located in the centre of Mersch, its history goes back to the 13th century. Today the castle houses the administrative offices of the local commune. History The castle was built in the 13th century by Theodoric, a knight in the service of Countess Ermesinde of Luxembourg. It was captured and burnt down by the Burgundians. In 1574, Paul von der Veltz transformed the building into a comfortable castle in the Renaissance style. The keep had large windows and the property was surrounded by a protective wall with seven towers. Finely vaulted ceilings were erected over the rooms on the ground floor and the first floor. The Knights' Hall on the second floor has a magnificent chimney. The arms of 16 noblemen decorated the walls. In 1603, the castle was again destroyed by the Dutch. In 1635, during the Thirty Years' War, the castle and the village were left in a sorry state. However, around 1700, it was once again repaired, this time by Johann-Friedrich von Elter who rebuilt the gate and appended his coat of arms. The chapel was restored in 1717 by von Elter. The altar bears the arms of the castle's heiress, Charlotte von Elter. In 1898, the Sonnenberg-Reinach family sold the castle to a businessman called Schwartz-Hallinger. In 1930, restoration work was carried out by the owner M. Uhres. In 1938, a youth hostel was housed in a new building adjacent to the castle. From 1957, the commune acquired the building but sold it to the State of Luxembourg in 1960. As a result of an exchange agreement, the commune finally regained ownership in 1988 and undertook substantial renovation work for the needs of itse administrative services which now occupy the building.

Histoire Le château a été construit au xiiie siècle par Theodoric, un chevalier au service de la comtesse Ermesinde de Luxembourg. Il fut pris d’assaut et incendié par les troupes bourguignonnes. En 1574, Paul von der Veltz transforma la bâtisse médiévale en un château confortable dans le style Renaissance : les dimensions étaient de 61 sur 70 mètres, le fossé avait une largeur de onze mètres et le mur d'enceinte, épais de 1,35 m, était flanqué de sept tours. Les chambres du rez-de-chaussée et du premier possédaient une voûte. Le hall des chevaliers, au second étage, comportait une magnifique cheminée et les murs étaient décorés des armoiries de 16 nobles. Le château fut à nouveau détruit en 1603. C’est vers la fin du xviie siècle que le comte Jean Frédéric d'Autel fit reconstruire le château. Ses armoiries, à l'entrée du château, rappellent cette restauration. En 1898, le château fut vendu au commerçant Schwartz-Hallinger. En 1938, une auberge de jeunesse fut installée dans une nouvelle bâtisse, adjacente au château. En 1957, le château devint la propriété de la commune qui, après rénovations, y installa son administration communale.

1232 tritt Theodorich I., der erste Herr von Mersch in Erscheinung. Er war Ritter und Truchsess (Vorsteher der Hofverwaltung) der Gräfin Ermesinde. In der Urkunde von 1232 wird eine "turris" erwähnt. Theodorich wird eine neue Burg bauen mit einem Wassergraben. Die Burganlage wurde von burgundischen Truppen gestürmt und in Brand gesetzt. Paulus von der Veltz wurde gegen Ende des 16. Jh. alleiniger Besitzer der Burg. Er ließ 1574 einen Grundriss des Merscher Schlosses anfertigen. Der Schlossbering hatte die Außenmaße von 61 x 70 m. Der Graben war 11 m breit. Die Ringmauer war 1,35 m stark, versehen mit 7 Außentürmen. Paulus von der Veltz ließ die mittelalterliche Burg in ein wohnliches Schloss umbauen, indem er in den Bergfried große Fenster brechen ließ. 1930 ließ der damalige Besitzer, Herr Uhres, eine Renovierung durchführen. 1938 wurde in einem Neubau, der an das Schloss angebaut wurde, eine Jugendherberge errichtet. 1957 kaufte die Gemeinde das Schloss. Drei Jahre später ging das Schloss in den Besitz des Staates über. Aber schon 1988 wurde die Gemeinde wieder Besitzer des Schlosses durch einen Tauschvertrag mit dem Staat. Nach Umbauarbeiten bezog die Gemeindeverwaltung 1993 die Räumlichkeiten.
