Along its 250 year old history, this establishment went through the hands of various owners and it went through multiple orientations. The Brukenthal Family, various families from the area, the Evangelical Community Rectory were in turn the owners of the assembly, the latter opening a thermal establishment and a sanatorium back in 1908. After 1948 the settlement became state-owned, the sanatorium being preserved. Starting with 1999 the land is acquired by the Samuel von Brukenthal foundation. Nowadays, the building complex is open to the general public that wishes to enjoy the unique atmosphere found at the bottom of the Carpathians. The Baroque Palace is the main building of the summer residence. It is found on top of a 12-metre terrace found above of the Olt Valley, representing the highest point of Avrig. The assembly is comprised of a main three-winged building conjoined with two single-storey annex buildings. The U-shaped building assembly is oriented towards the park, as it was the custom in Transylvania, and not towards the street. Probably the sole garden-monument in Southern Transylvania, the park was mainly preserved according to the initial structure. Today, the symmetrical, strict shapes can only be guessed, while the original plants suffered decades of neglect and were nearly lost – aside from a few exceptions, such as the tulip trees. Starting with the last couple of decades restoration procedures ensued to revive the initial appearance. Being ideally placed at the middle of the park, the Orangery is the main attraction point for those who visit the Brukenthal assembly. The former historical charm has been restored and completed with the comfort and elegance of the modern age. De-a lungul istoriei sale de 250 de ani stabilimentul a trecut prin mâinile mai multor proprietari și a cunoscut mai multe orientări. Familia Brukenthal, diverse familii din zona, Prezbiteriul Comunității Evanghelice care a si deschis in 1908 un sanatoriu si un stabiliment termal. După anul 1948 așezământul a fost preluat de stat, care a menținut sanatoriul. Începând cu anul 1999 terenul intră în proprietatea fundației Samuel von Brukenthal, iar în anul 2005 a fost desființat sanatoriul. Astăzi, complexul este deschis vizitatorilor care vor să se bucure de atmosfera aparte la umbra Munților Carpați. Palatul baroc este clădirea dominantă a reședinței de vară. Este situat pe o terasă de 12 metri deasupra Văii Oltului, în punctul cel mai ridicat al orașului Avrig. Ansamblul cuprinde o clădire principală cu trei aripi, de care sunt alipite două clădiri anexă fără etaj. Planul în formă de U este orientat, așa cum se obișnuia în Transilvania, nu înspre stradă, ci înspre parc. Fiind probabil singura grădină-monument din Transilvania de Sud, parcul s- a păstrat în mare parte în conformitate cu structura inițială.Formele stricte, simetrice, astăzi se pot doar intui, plantele originale aproape s-au pierdut de-a lungul decenilor de neglijare – cu mici excepții, cum ar fi arborii de lalea (tulipanii). De abia de la începutul ultimului mileniu au început treptat lucrările de redare a aspectului inițial. Situată idilic în mijlocul parcului Oranjeria este punctul de atracție principal pentru vizitatorii ansamblului Brukenthal. Az alsószombatfalvi méntelep területén lévő Brukenthal kastélyt 1750-ben gróf Jozef von Brukenthal, Samuil von Brukenthal testvére építette. A kastély masszív építmény, falai elérik az 1.2 méter vastagságot, 35 szobája van, amelyekben csodaszép csempekályhákat állítottak fel, a padló tölgyfából készült, és az emberek azt mesélik, hogy az egyik falon a 70-es években lemeszeltek egy szép freskót. A kastély felépítése hosszú ideig tartott. A kb.1700 hektáros területet Brukenthal haszonbérbe kapta 99 évre, Mária Teréziától. Hálája jeléül a gróf kastélyt építtetett, és azt tervezte, hogy abban fogadja Mária Teréziát, de nem tudni, hogy a császárné, átlépte-e vala a kastély küszöbét. A helybéliek előszeretettel mesélnek a kettőjük között szövődött szenvedélyes szerelemről. Legendák keltek szárnyra. Egyesek szerint a császárné sohasem jött el a grófhoz, míg mások szerint több nyarat is itt töltött, de hamar ráunt a grófra.
