Urspelt Castle is located in the little village of Urspelt some 3 km (2 mi) north-east of Clervaux in northern Luxembourg. Though the castle has a history going back at least three centuries, today's building dates from 1860. After comprehensive restoration work and additions, it recently opened as a hotel and meeting centre. History The origins of the castle go back more than 300 years when it was a small country property. Then in 1860, Amand Bouvier considerably expanded it. A new garden was laid out, now one of the area's most notable parks with its avenues and elm trees. When Bouvier died in 1900, he left a magnificent estate to his nephew Alfred Bouvier but he and his descendants failed to show much interest in the property. During the Second World War, the Germans used the castle as their headquarters for northern Luxembourg until they were forced to abandon it to the Americans during the Battle of the Bulge in the winter of 1944. After the war, the castle fell into disrepair and was used only as a hunting lodge. Towards the end of the 20th century, the deserted building was increasingly invaded by the surrounding undergrowth. Finally, in August 2005, Freddy Lodomez bought the property and immediately embarked on comprehensive restoration work which continued for three years as the building was fitted out as a luxury hotel. An old well, apparently dating back to an 11th-century stronghold, was found and renovated. A second tower was added at the far end of the castle to house a lift. L’origine du château actuel remonte à plus de 300 ans, époque à laquelle il a construit sur les vestiges d’un bâtiment précèdent datant du 13ème siècle. Durant la seconde guerre mondiale, le château fut tour à tour poste de commandement et hôpital de campagne, subissant ainsi de nombreux et très étendus dommages. Laissé à l’abandon à la libération du Luxembourg, le château disparut petit à petit dans une végétation envahissante ainsi que dans la mémoire des habitants. En 2005, Freddy Lodomez, entrepreneur passionné, en tomba littéralement amoureux et décida de restaurer totalement cet élément important du patrimoine bâti luxembourgeois. Les travaux de restauration dureront 3 longues années durant lesquels une centaine d’artisans œuvreront sans relâche pour redonner au château son éclat et sa beauté d’antan. L’activité hôtelière actuelle démarra officiellement en octobre 2008, après le classement officiel en tant que « Monument National Luxembourgeois » par le gouvernement du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg. Der Ursprung des heutigen Schlosses wird auf mehr als 300 Jahre zurück datiert, als dieses auf den Ruinen, eines vorigen Gebäudes des 13. Jahrhunderts, erbaut wurde. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg war das Schloss abwechselnd militärisches Hauptquartier und Feldlazarett, und hat somit viele und umfangreiche Schäden erlitten. Nach der Befreiung war das Schloss unbewohnt und verschwand Schritt für Schritt in der immer größer werdenden Vegetation, sowie auch aus den Erinnerungen der Einwohner. 2005 verliebte sich Freddy Lodomez, ein begeisterter Unternehmer, in das Schloss und beschloss, dieses entscheidende Element des luxemburgischen Architekturerbes von Grund auf zu restaurieren. Die Restaurierungsarbeiten dauerten drei lange Jahre, während denen Hunderte Handwerker ohne Pause daran arbeiteten, dem Schloss seinen Glanz und seine Schönheit von einst wiederzugeben. Offiziell begannen die Hotelaktivitäten im Oktober 2008, nachdem die Regierung des Großherzogtums Luxemburg ihm den Status eines „Nationalen Monuments“ gewährt hatte. Das Hotel befindet sich in einer ständigen Entwicklung, so wurde es beispielsweise 2016 durch die Hinzufügung eines Flügels von 1800 m² erweitert.
