The Castello di Frascarolo (Frascarolo castle) or of Medici of Marignano is on the hill which almost constitutes the foot of the Campo dei Fiori, a well-visible fort in a dominating position between Ganna and Ceresio valleys. The castle is still private property and cannot be toured without specific permission. It is approximately 1 km from the town of Induno Olona, a town on the outskirts of Varese, and is easy to reach on a convenient winding road. The history of the Castello di Frascarolo It is believed the castle is from the early Middle Ages, perhaps the work of the Longobards, but it’s only documented in 1160 when Archbishop of Milan Oberto da Pirovano upheld a valid resistance to the advancing inhabitants of Como looking to conquer the Varese area. However, it’s possible that the castle was only a rural fort back then. Starting in the 12th century, it was the property of the Abbey of Ganna (or Abbey of San Gemolo in Ganna Valley), and followed destiny and plunders including the one by the Swiss Unterwalden from Mendrisio in 1511; it was purchased by Marquis of Marignano Gian Battista Medici in 1543. It was precisely with the advent of the noble Medici family that the castle was renovated and embellished. Over the centuries, it lost its defensive physiognomy to become a typical 16th-century residence. The castle and its massive walls flaunt a mighty 15th-century tower with a rusticated portal, courtyard with a loggia, and an adjacent section built in the 16th century when it became an exclusive dwelling. Il castello di Frascarolo è un castello della Lombardia in provincia di Varese compreso nel territorio del comune di Induno Olona, ai piedi del monte Monarco, tra le valli di Ganna e Ceresio. Non visitabile se non con specifico permesso, dista circa 1 km dal centro di Induno Olona ed è facilmente raggiungibile per mezzo di una strada a tornanti. Le decorazioni abbelliscono tutte le sale del castello, che all'interno ospita, tra l'altro, un giardino all'italiana, con terrazze e fontane; dal castello si gode un bel panorama sulla pianura lombarda. Storia Probabilmente il castello sorse nell'Alto Medioevo forse a opera dei Longobardi come fortezza per controllare l'accesso alla Valganna e alla Valceresio; ma si hanno notizie documentate solo a partire dal 1160, quando l'arcivescovo di Milano Oberto da Pirovano usò il castello come fortezza per difendere Varese dai Comaschi che avevano parteggiato con il Barbarossa. Dal XII secolo fu di proprietà dell'abbazia di San Gemolo (in Valganna) fino al XVI secolo; nel 1543 fu acquistato da Gian Battista Medici marchese di Marignano. Da allora, salvo brevi periodi, è sempre stato, e lo è ancora oggi, di proprietà della famiglia Medici di Marignano e non è visitabile. Dal XVI secolo in avanti il castello ha perso gran parte della sua fisionomia difensiva, di cui rimane solo la torre a ovest, poiché i Medici lo trasformarono in una residenza tipicamente Cinquecentesca. Nel castello vissero Margherita Medici di Marignano, sorella di papa Pio IV e madre di san Carlo Borromeo, che forse crebbe proprio qui, e il sacerdote Bartolomeo Sessa, benefattore varesino, figlio di Ippolita Medici di Marignano. Nel 1837 fu ospite al castello il compositore Gaetano Donizetti e, poco dopo, lo scrittore Gian Battista Bazzoni.
