The Visconti Castle of Binasco is a Middle Age castle located in the center of Binasco, Metropolitan City of Milan, Lombardy, northern Italy. It is famed for having been the prison of Beatrice di Tenda (Duchess of Milan and wife of Filippo Maria Visconti), who was arrested and there sentenced to death for adultery in 1418. Today it is the seat of the municipality of Binasco. History The castle originated from a stronghold built by the Visconti in the 14th century to take care of their land in the area. Probably between 1315 and 1319 the nearby church of Saint Stephan was founded and the castle built by Luchino Visconti, Lord of Milan. The first mention of a castle in Binasco dates back to 1329, when it was used by Azzone Visconti and his uncle Giovanni as a prison for their political opponents. In the 17th century the castle underwent transformations and restorations. At the end of the 19th century it was sacked during the Napoleonic age and in 1869 hit by a ruinous fire. The current aspect is the result of subsequent restorations that gave back the sense of the ancient fortress. Two towers are still visible along the south front

Il castello di Binasco è il principale edificio difensivo di origine medievale situato a Binasco, in provincia di Milano, in Lombardia. Le prime notizie relative ad un fortilizio presente nel borgo di Binascono risalgono all'anno 1129 quando questo viene citato in una bolla del vescovo Bernardo. La posizione geografica favorevole di Binasco, posto sull'importante via di collegamento tra Milano e Pavia, fece acquisire una notevole importanza al borgo ed al suo castello che venne ingrandito in particolare sotto il dominio dei Visconti. Filippo Maria Visconti ricevette il castello ed il borgo di Binasco da Gian Galeazzo Visconti come proprio feudo personale e questi vi si ritirò volentieri nel corso della sua vita. Qui, Filippo Maria consumò anche il delitto della sua prima moglie, Beatrice di Tenda, già vedova di Facino Cane, che venne fatta decapitare nella notte tra il 13 ed il 14 settembre 1418 per ordine del duca che l'aveva ingiustamente accusata per poter sposare poi Agnese del Maino, sua amante. Con Beatrice venne decapitato anche il suo paggio, Michele Orombello, accusato di esserne l'amante. Nel 1796, dopo la discesa di Napoleone in Italia, il castello venne occupato dalle truppe francesi, subendo alcuni danni nel corso dell'incendio del paese tra il 24 ed il 25 maggio di quell'anno.
