Between Selva Gardena and Santa Cristina, there is Gardena Castle, once upon a time summer residence and hunting castle. On the left side of the Rio Gardena, between Selva Gardena and Santa Cristina, there is the Renaissance building of Castel Gardena, surrounded by numerous fish ponds that were name-giving for the castle (the German name “Fischburg” means “Fishing Castle”). It was constructed between 1622 and 1641 by Engelhard Dietrich von Wolkenstein-Trostburg as summer residence and hunting castle, even if the monumental construction conveys Mediaeval grandeur. Actually, the inventory of the castle reveals that the castle contains more hunting weapons than weapons of war. Moreover appliances for fishing were found - not far to seek, as there are the nearby fishing ponds. At the end of the 18th century, the castle started deteriorating, in 1826 parts of the inventory were sold by public sale. In the mid 19th century, Leopold Earl of Wolkenstein-Trostburg gave the castle to the municipality of Santa Cristina. In those days, a retirement home or poorhouse was meant to be established in the castle. However, in 1926, it was sold to Baron Carlo Franchetti from Venice, who had the castle restored inside and outside and furnished it with chattels of South Tyrol and the Val Gardena. Il Castel Gardena (in tedesco Fischburg o in gardenese 'I Ciastèl), è un castello che si trova ai piedi del gruppo del Sassolungo tra i comuni di Selva e Santa Cristina Valgardena, in Alto Adige. Origine del nome Il nome originario del castello, "Fischburg", significa "castello della pesca". Il nome deriva dai tanti laghetti che il proprietario del castello aveva fatto scavare per allevare delle trote. Cenni storici Il Castel Gardena con il paese di Santa Cristina sullo sfondo in una stampa di Johann Mosmair, disegno di Johann Martin Benz del 1840 ca. Il castello fu costruito nel 1641 dai Conti di Wolkenstein verosimilmente con l'intervento progettuale nel 1625 dello scultore-architetto Hans Reichle del Schongau, allievo del Gianbologna, allo scopo abitativo e come castello da caccia in stile rinascimentale, pur mostrando alcune caratteristiche di fortificazione. Il nome tedesco Fischburg deriva dal fatto che il conte aveva costruito nei paraggi una serie di laghetti nei quali allevava le trote che si dilettava a pescare. Il castello è situato a ridosso del pendio boschivo sul quale sono tracciati gli impianti sciistici Saslong di Selva e di Santa Cristina. Il castello appartiene attualmente alla famiglia del Barone Andrea Franchetti, che lo abita nel periodo estivo. Per questo motivo il castello non è visitabile, seppur d'estate in occasione del Valgardenamusika, si tengano dei concerti nel suo cortile.
