The beginnings of the castle date back to approximately the onset of the 14th century. During its course of time, the castle became the family residence of the Zajíce of Valdek. In the middle of the 16th century, following the Hussite wars, the Zajíces abandoned the castle, thus marking the onset of its deterioration. Mainly the two towers have been preserved from the original building - the Black Tower (cylindrical, basalt) and White Tower (quadrilateral, sandstone). Hazmburk je zdaleka viditelná zřícenina gotického hradu u vsi Klapý, 3,5 kilometru severozápadně od města Libochovice v okrese Litoměřice. Stojí na vrcholu stejnojmenného vrchu v nadmořské výšce 418 metrů. Úbočí kopce jsou chráněná jako přírodní památka Vrch Hazmburk. Vrch je krajinnou dominantou dolního Poohří. Zřícenina je chráněna jako kulturní památka České republiky a od roku 2002 ji spravuje národní památkový ústav. Hrad byl od roku 1335 do roku 1558 sídlem rodu Zajíců z Hazmburka. Později, podobně jako ostatní hrady, ztratil svůj význam a byl opuštěn. Postupně zpustl a až v době romantismu se stal předmětem zájmu českých romantiků jako byl Karel Hynek Mácha nebo Svatopluk Čech. V písemných pramenech se jméno hradu uvádí také jako Házmburk, někdy též jako Zaječí hrad, Zajícův hrad, nebo ve starších pramenech Hanžburek.
