How to get there
The Upper Gate with Barbican is located on the southern side of Bardejov on Rhodyho Street in the historic center. We recommend that you park your car at one of the official parking lots outside the center (eg. SNP square or somewhere closer to the center) and from there take a walk to the Radničné Square, then na Hradbách to Rhodyho Street. Here in the underground café dominates the original wall of the castle gate. The Upper Gate is part of the city walls that extend almost the entire perimeter of the historic center.
Description

The smooth ground plan of the fortification wall protrudes into the foreground in the form of a wide arch. In the middle of the protruding formation was placed a Tower gate, from which passed through the drawbridge to the barbican and from there across another bridge to the Prešov road. The bridge, originally wooden, was replaced in 1770 by a five-arch stone bridge. From the barbican, the south-western part of the arc of the wall has been preserved, the south-eastern part of the arch in the foundations of the dwelling house, the part of the arch leading to the bridge over the water ditch and reinforced water ditches. In the premises of the underground café the original walls of the castle were preserved.

History

Bardejov Castle is first mentioned in 1407 in connection with the toll station in Bardejov and its economic adviser Marek of Nuremberg. Among other things, Marek tried to solve the issue of the safety of the collection of taxes in Bardejov, and therefore, as the administrator of the station, he wanted to build a fortress here - a castle. Probably due to lack of a suitable place (at that time Bardejov was already fortified with walls and bastions) he decided to turn the main city gate into a castle and accommodate its own guard in it.

In his decision, Marek based on the advantageous position of the Upper Tower. The deed of Mark of Nuremberg caused resentment among the inhabitants of the city, because the crew of the castle controlled the most important arrival in the city and did not follow the needs of the city. Therefore, the Bardejov people fought to get the Upper Gate - the castle back into their administration. They succeeded, at least in part, in 1412, when the king Sigismund to help to the city for its proven allegiance, removed the gate and the castle from the authority of the royal teners and handed it over to the city.

The gate as a castle is still mentioned in the 16th century, but then the news about Bardejov Castle are lost and the castle - the gate had only its original function. From 2015, archaeological research and the restoration of the city fortifications began, where at the beginning, complex masonry of a horseshoe-shaped forecourt, a bridge structure, a barbican and an external moat wall were discovered.
