Brakel Castle was blown up by French troops in 1672. A century later, Wilhelmus Wilhelmius commissioned the new Brakel House close by. The ruins of the old castle were included in the landscaped gardens in around 1820. This was a new trend in landscape gardening and the example at Brakel House is now the only remaining example in the province.

Brakel Castle
The earliest mention of Brakel Castle dates from the mid-13th century. At that time, it was a square, moated castle, situated close to the village of Brakel behind the newly-built Waaldijk dike. In 1321, the castle was struck by lightning and destroyed by fire. This led the knight Sir Eustachius van Brakel to lend his castle to the Count of Guelders in exchange for the count’s protection. Unfortunately, this was not enough to defend the castle against the hostile forces of the Count of Holland in 1407. The castle was destroyed and then rebuilt once again. In 1574, the Brakel Castle was plundered by the Spanish and subsequently blown up by French soldiers in 1672.

Romantic ruins
After this final blow, the medieval castle was never rebuilt. Work on the new house did not start until 1786, more than a hundred years later. The castle ruins were preserved and included in the design of the new landscape gardens and the south-west tower was partially restored. The owner was a collector of antiquities who chose to include grave stones and memorial plaques in the new walls for the house. He also established an archaeological museum in the medieval grain store called ‘Het Spijker’ (The Nail).

Landscaped Park
The national heritage foundations Het Geldersch Landschap and Geldersche Kasteelen acquired Brakel House in 1972. They turned the walled garden next to the ruins into a flower, herb and vegetable garden and restored the surrounding parklands to their former glory. In the 19th century, medieval ruins in landscaped gardens were the height of fashion and this example at Brakel House is the only one to survive in Gelderland.

Loevestein Castle is a medieval castle in the municipality of Zaltbommel, Gelderland, the Netherlands.

The castle was built by the knight Dirc Loef van Horne (hence "Loef's stein" (stone) house) between 1357 and 1397. Until World War II Loevestein Castle was part of the Hollandic Water Line, the main Dutch defense line that was based on flooding an area of land south and east of the western provinces. Currently the castle is used as a medieval museum and function centre.

History 

Loevestein is a water castle that was built between 1357 and 1368. It was built in a strategic location in the middle of the Netherlands, where the Maas and Waal rivers come together (just west of current day villages of Poederoijen and Brakel, in the municipality of Zaltbommel, in Gelderland). At first it was a simple square brick building, used to charge toll from trading vessels using the rivers. By 1372, the castle was under control of the Counts of Holland.[1] In the 16th century (around 1575, orders given by William the Silent) it was expanded to a larger fortress surrounded by earthen fortifications with two (later three) stone bastions on the northern side, two moats, an arsenal, and housing for a commander and soldiers. The Castle was also part of the Hollandic Water Line.

It changed hands twice between the Northern Dutch and the Spanish during the Eighty Years' War: on December 9, 1570, it was taken by the Geuzen; ten days later by the Spanish again; and on June 25, 1572, it was retaken by the Dutch.

From 1619 the castle became a prison for political prisoners. One famous inmate was the eminent lawyer, poet and politician Hugo de Groot (Hugo Grotius) often presented as the "father of modern international law", who was serving a controversially imposed life sentence from 1619. In 1621, his wife Maria van Reigersberch, who was also staying at the castle, hid with him in a book chest that was regularly brought for them.[2][3] He subsequently became the Swedish Ambassador to France for 10 years. Another high-profile inmate was the English Vice-Admiral George Ayscue.

Slot Loevestein

Heukelum Castle, also known for a long time as Merckenburg, is situated just outside the old fortified town of Heukelum on the border of Gelderland and South Holland. The illustrious Van Arkel family had the castle built in around 1286. It was once a sturdy castle with towers, a courtyard, a double moat and a fortified bailey. Nowadays, it has the appearance of an 18th-century country house.

Vision
The reason why Jan van Arkel had the castle built in around 1286 has to do with the crusades. When the knight Jan van Arkel was encamped beneath the walls of Jerusalem during the Fifth Crusade, he had a vision. Tradition has it that the Archangel Gabriel appeared above the walls of Jerusalem and said, ‘Go where this swan takes you and build your castle there.’ Jan van Arkel sailed in his ship behind the swan and when the swan settled in Heukelum, the family gave orders for a castle to be built there.

Arkel War
Heukelum Castle was one of nine castles intended to strengthen the family’s position along the turbulent border between Guelders and Holland. All of them were destroyed during the Arkel War (1401-1412) except Heukelum. Merckenburg Castle is therefore the last remaining castle of the Arkel family. For a long time, Heukelum remained an important manorial court; a mini-state with its own currency and various privileges.

Waterline
In Het Rampjaar of 1672 (literally the year of disaster, which marked the start of the Franco-Dutch War of 1672-1678), the troops of the French kingLouis XIVmarched into Holland. They were held back by the waterline, whereupon the French plundered and burned all of the buildings situated south of this temporary border. Heukelum, by then an obsolete fortress, succumbed to the same fate and the castle and the town were severely damaged. It is a miracle that the medieval gate tower is still standing. In 1732, a double Amsterdam canal house was built against the old tower. Today, Heukelum Castle is a private residence and is not open to the public.

Kasteel Merckenburg

Kasteel Goudenstein is een kasteelruïne in Haaften, een dorp in de gemeente Neerijnen in de Nederlandse provincie Gelderland.

Geschiedenis
Vanaf de 13e eeuw is er sprake van het kasteel, haar bouwers en bewoners, het geslacht Van Haeften. In het rampjaar 1672 werd het kasteel door de Franse troepen van koning Lodewijk XIV verwoest, waarbij slechts een hoektoren gespaard bleef. De toren is circa 19 meter hoog en 3,5 meter doorsnede. Halverwege zijn in het muurwerk sporen van kantelen zichtbaar. De weergang was oorspronkelijk op deze hoogte, de muur eronder heeft een dikte van 1,10 meter, terwijl daarboven de muur slechts 25 centimeter is. De muur werd vermoedelijk in de 16e eeuw verhoogd. Het geslacht Dutry van Haeften, verwanten maar geen directe nakomelingen van de bouwers, hield de overgebleven toren in bezit tot 1975. De Stichting Vrienden der Geldersche Kasteelen verwierf de toren en heeft deze onder haar hoede genomen.

De toren staat in de achtertuin van twee woningen in de Dreef en is niet toegankelijk voor het publiek, maar kan bezichtigd worden vanaf de Dreef en ook, maar minder goed vanaf de Koningsstraat en de Goudensteinstraat die naar de ruïne vernoemd is. Samen met de Protestantse kerk en korenmolen De Blauwe Reiger bepaalt Goudenstein de horizon van Haaften. Doordat Haaften in een uitstulping van de Waalbandijk ligt, zijn deze drie vanuit allerlei richtingen op verscheidene kilometers afstand te zien, bijvoorbeeld vanaf de dijken in Waardenburg en Herwijnen en vanaf de overkant van de Waal van Zaltbommel tot Nieuwaal en bij helder weer zelfs vanaf de dijk tussen Zuilichem en Brakel.

Kasteel Goudenstein

Nederhemert Castle has been built, rebuilt and expanded numerous times throughout its turbulent history. It started life as a keep in the 13th century and was expanded into a polygonal castle with four towers over several centuries.In 1945, the castle was destroyed by fire and fell into ruin. It was restored to its former glory in 2005.

Imposing castle
Nederhemert castle is situated on an ancient bend in the river Maas. As with many castles, the date when the castle was first built is unknown, yet Johan van Hemert is named as owner of this ‘stronghold at Hemert’ in 1310. The oldest parts of the castle date from the end of the 13th century: a two-storey keep and a cellar with notable Bohemian-style vaulting. Some 30 years later, the keep was expanded with the addition of two corner towers - one rectangular, one round - with a walled courtyard in between. A great hall and gateway were added around 1350, and a hexagonal tower was added in the 15th century. These additions transformed Nederhemert into an imposing castle.

Comfortable country house
The castle remained as it was for several centuries until it was renovated into a comfortable country house at the end of the 19th century. The castle was plastered and given crenellations, a veranda and a balcony in neo-Gothic style. Over its 650-year history, Nederhemert was home to many noble families. It even boasted a bed said to have belonged to Maarten van Rossum, the Duke of Guelders’ most notorious field marshal. At the end of WWII, the castle and its contents were completely destroyed by fire.

Risen from the ashes
The last owners sold what was left of the castle and its surrounding parkland to the Dutch state, which transferred the estate, in turn, to the Geldersch Landschap and Geldersche Kasteelen national heritage foundations. There was a lack of funding for the restoration for some time and the castle fell into ruin. Restoration work finally took place between 2001 and 2005, returning Nederhemert, as much as possible, to its medieval glory. The castle now houses offices and is only open to the public in a limited capacity. 

Kasteel Nederhemert

Aan de Maasdijk in Well staat het slot van Malsen, dat ook het Slot van Well wordt genoemd, te koop. Het Gelderse Well is deel van de gemeente Maasdriel.

Prijsdaling

Enkele jaren geleden werd het kasteel ook al eens te koop aangeboden, toen voor bijna zeven miljoen gulden. Intussen is de prijs danig gezakt want de vraagprijs bedraagt nu iets meer dan vier miljoen gulden. Dat betekent dus een behoorlijke prijsdaling in enkele jaren.
Voor deze vier miljoen krijgt men wel heel wat, want het kasteel staat op een landgoed van ruim 2,5 ha met boomgaard en weiden. Op het terrein staat ook een koetshuis met keuken, woonkamer en slaapkamers; dit koetshuis is in gebruik als atelier.

Indeling

De toegang tot het kasteel van Malsen wordt gevormd door een ophaalbrug. Op de benedenverdieping bevinden zich onder meer een woonkeuken, een eetkamer en de zgn. gobelinkamer. Vanuit deze benedenverdieping is via openslaande deuren een aan het water liggend terras bereikbaar.

Op de ingangsverdieping bevindt zich de hal en een trappenhuis. Op hogere verdiepingen zijn een woonkamer, een zitkamer en slaapkamers ingericht en daarboven zijn dan nog een zolder en een kleine zolderkamer aanwezig. Vanuit deze laatste kamer kan van een schitterend uitzicht over de rivier de Maas worden genoten.

Geschiedenis Slot van Well

Het kasteel van Well, een oorspronkelijke woontoren, dateert uit de veertiende eeuw. Het was het stamhuis van de Heren van Malsen. Tijdens het Rampjaar 1672 werd ook dit kasteel zwaar beschadigd. In latere jaren werd het weer opgebouwd. In 1884 kreeg het kasteeltje een nieuwe voorbouw met een ronde toren. In de vorige eeuw werd nog een poortgebouwtje met een ophaalbrug aangebouwd.

Het Slot van Well is een Gelders kasteel. Nu de prijs zo sterk is gedaald zou je verwachten dat de Stichting Vrienden van de Geldersche Kasteelen een potentiële koper zou kunnen zijn, maar de stichting heeft zich hier nog niet over uitgelaten.

Slot van Well

Ammersoyen Castle (Dutch: Kasteel Ammersoyen) is located in Ammerzoden in the Bommelerwaard region in the province of Gelderland, the Netherlands. When the original construction of the castle occurred is unclear; some sources claim it was as early as the 12th century. However, the consensus among historians is that the Van Herlaer family completed the castle in the 1350s. At the time of its construction, the castle was built along a branch of the River Maas. Just a few years after the construction of the castle was completed, the river was rerouted leaving the castle to be surrounded by a moat.

Architecture

The castle was designed to be a defensive fortress. When it was originally constructed, it had a central courtyard, surrounded by four heavy towers on the corners. Connecting these four towers were four heavy wings, one on each side of the courtyard. Ammersoyen Castle is a good example of the type of castle that was made famous by Count Floris V of Holland. Even though it was originally built on a river, the Van Herlaers believed that all four sides of the castle needed to be fortified. To add to the security, the original design included a moat that ensured any attacker could only invade through the front of the fortress. Except for a brief period in the early 20th century, the castle has always been completely surrounded by the moat. The castle was built using a fixed plan, something that was quite uncommon for medieval castles. A fixed plan means that the entire castle was built as a whole, as opposed to multiple phases, which was often the case with other medieval castles.

History

14th century–16th century
Dirk Van Herlaer, of the Van Herlaer family, built the castle in the 1350s. Upon Dirk's death in 1354, the castle was passed onto his eldest son, Gerhard. Over the next 30 years the castle passed hands numerous times within the family. When Gerhard died, the castle was passed onto his brother, Arent. Gerhard had no children to claim the castle as part of their inheritance, which is the reason it was passed to his brother. When Arent died in 1384, the castle was given to his son, Arent Hoeman. It is under Arent Hoeman where the Van Herlaer's lost control of the castle for good.

The castle is located in the province of Gelderland, the Netherlands. In the late 14th century, Duke William of Gelder's and Julich controlled Gelderland. Arent Hoeman was one of the most trusted friends of Duke William. In 1386 a war broke out due to a land dispute between Gelderland and the Duchy of Brabant. The Burgundians were aggressively trying to expand their territory at this time, and tried to take over parts of Gelderland.

Despite his close relationship with Duke William, Arent Hoeman sided with the Duchess of Brabant. William, unsurprisingly, saw this as an act of betrayal and abruptly ended his friendship with Arent Hoeman. Just days later, Duke William invaded Ammerzoden, capturing both Arent Hoeman and the castle. Thus, in 1386 the castle came under the control of Duke William.

Following the end of the war, Duke Williams gave the castle to his illegitimate son in 1405. His son did not hold the castle for long, as he sold it to Johan Van Broeckhuysen, lord of the Waardenburg, in 1424. The castle only changed hands by marriage for the next 400 years. In 1496, Johan Van Broeckhuysen married Otto Van Arkel, which ended up giving the Van Arkel family control of the castle for centuries. The Van Arkel family was a well-known and quite wealthy family in the region at the time of the wedding. At the end of their rule, the Van Arkels had controlled the castle for five generations.

In 1513, during the Guelderian Wars, the Habsburgs attempted to seize control of the castle from across the River Maas, and briefly occupied the castle. Burgundian troops, led by Count Henrick Van Nassau, occupied the castle for a brief time in the mid-16th century. During the siege and subsequent occupation, the castle was moderately damaged and a large amount of personal property needed to be replaced. At this point in their rule, the Van Arkels were still very rich, so they had the means to repair the castle.

The castle was also occupied for a short time again in 1572, when the Spanish invaded the Netherlands. However, the castle was not held long by the Spanish, as Prince Willem Van Oranje and his troops were able to drive the Spanish troops out. This liberation of the castle kept the damage inflicted by the Spanish to a minimum. By 1590, the castle was fully repaired and it was once again almost destroyed, this time by a fire.

The lord of the castle at the time, Joris Van Arkel, died from injuries that he sustained during the fire.

18th century–present

Due to a shortage of money, the Van Arkels were not able to rebuild the castle until the 17th century. This fire took place during the 80 years war and caused the family to have very uncertain feelings about its economic future. Therefore, it was not until the end of the 80 years war in the middle of the 17th century that large-scale renovations would start on the castle.

Ammersoyen Castle

Waardenburg Castle dates from the 13th century. Only half of the original building remains: the south wing was destroyed in the Eighty Years’ War and was never rebuilt. Legend has it that the infamous Doctor Faust lived in the castle. At the end of his pact with the devil he was said to have been thrown from the castle tower.

From tower to castle
The precise construction date of medieval castles is seldom known yet in this case, Waardenburg is an exception. On 2nd August 1265, Count Otto II of Guelders pledged the manor of Waardenburg to the knight Rudolph de Cock. Knight Rudolph first built a wooden tower, which was soon replaced by a stone tower. His son and grandson turned the keep into a round castle with three connecting wings, a circular wall, towers, fortified bailey and a moat.

Doctor Faust
According to a legend in the Geldersche Volksalmanak (Gelderland’s Folk almanac) dating from 1842, the infamous Doctor Faust lived in Waardenburg Castle. Faust had made a pact with the devil and in exchange for his soul, he could have all of the knowledge from all of the world for seven years. After seven years of abusing this power, the devil came to take his soul. He dragged Faust by his hair out of the castle tower and the indelible blood stains can still be seen on the pavement to this day.Johann Georg Faust did actually exist and he was imprisoned in Batenburg Castle for several years.

Eighty Years’ War
In the Eighty Years’ War the castle’s occupant, Catharina van Gelder, sided with the Spaniards, which did not please William of Orange. He besieged the castle in 1574 destroying the south side of the castle and the fortified bailey which were never rebuilt. This explains why the castle is now shaped like a horseshoe. The rest of the castle was renovated in the 17th century and was home to various noble families. The building has recently been thoroughly restored and now houses an office. Access to the castle is limited.

Waardenburg Castle 

Kasteel Neerijnen is een kasteel en landgoed ten noorden van het dorp Neerijnen in de gemeente West Betuwe in de Nederlandse provincie Gelderland.

Klingelenburg

Tegenover Zaltbommel, dus ten noorden van de rivier de Waal, ligt de gemeente Neerijnen. In deze gemeente staan enkele bijzondere kastelen. Eén van die kastelen is kasteel Neerijnen. Het oorspronkelijke kasteel Neerijnen werd vroeger ook Klingelenburg genoemd. Het eerste kasteel dateert uit omstreeks het midden van de veertiende eeuw. Het is dus niet zo'n erg oud kasteel. Het kasteel werd gesticht door Gijsbrecht de Cocq (van Neerijnen). Kasteel Neerijnen was toen het middelpunt van de heerlijkheid Neerijnen. Dit huis werd vermoedelijk in 1574 verwoest en omstreeks het jaar 1600 herbouwd.

Van Gendt

Door vererving via Van Ghiesen kwam kasteel Neerijnen in handen van de familie Van Gendt. De buren van de familie Van Gendt bewoonden het kasteel Waardenburg, op een steenworp afstand, westelijk gelegen van het kasteel Neerijnen.
De laatste uit het geslacht Van Gendt was erfdochter Margaretha. Zij huwde met de belangrijke Friese edelman Tjaerd van Aylva.
In 1701 kocht het echtpaar Van Aylva-van Gendt ook de heerlijkheid Waardenburg. Sindsdien zijn de heerlijkheden Waardenburg en Neerijnen grotendeels in één hand. Tjaerd van Aylva verbouwde het kasteel grondig en maakte het beter geschikt voor bewoning.
Boven de voordeur is een rococo wapenschild aangebracht met de wapens van het echtpaar van Aylva-Van Gendt. Het wapen wordt aan de linkerzijde vergezeld door een liggende leeuw, aan de rechterzijde door een eenhoorn. Boven dit alliantiewapen zien we het kleurrijke wapen van de gemeente Neerijnen.

Vierkant kasteel

Het kasteel is een vrijwel vierkant gebouw van drie verdiepingen met een grote zolder onder een schilddak. Het kasteel is omgracht. Een boogbrug verbindt het kasteel met een voorterrein, waarop een langwerpig bijgebouw staat. Aan de linkerkant van het voorgebouw leidt een fraaie ophaalbrug naar de toegangslaan. Aan de oostkant van het kasteel staat tegenwoordig, in de hier zeer brede gracht, een fontein uitbundig te spuiten.
In 1827 stierf de laatste Van Aylva, waarmee dit geslacht uitgestorven was. Het kasteel kwam in handen van de familie Van Pallandt. De laatste barones van Pallandt overleed in 1971. Haar bezit vererfde op haar neef Jhr. Van Vredenburch. Hij verkocht het landgoed aan de stichting het Geldersch Landschap. Het kasteel Waardenburg werd in erfpacht overgedragen aan de Stichting Vrienden der Geldersche Kasteelen. De twee genoemde stichtingen werken al jaren lang zeer nauw samen. Kasteel Neerijnen werd gekocht door de gemeente Neerijnen, die het na restauratie heeft ingericht als gemeentehuis.

Landgoed Neerijnen

Kasteel Waardenburg is in 2009 ook opnieuw, groots, gerestaureerd. Beide kastelen liggen in het fraaie landgoed Neerijnen, zoals de combinatie van de oude heerlijkheden Waardenburg en Neerijnen thans wordt genoemd. Dit landgoed is voor het publiek toegankelijk. Er kunnen fraaie wandelingen worden gemaakt door een landschappelijk zeer afwisselend terrein. Binnendijks zijn een weelderig parkbos, boomgaarden en weilanden te vinden. Buitendijks bestaat het landgoed uit stroomdalgraslanden met meidoornhagen, grienden met wilgen en een oude rivierloop. Kortom: Gelderland op zijn mooist.


Kasteel Neerijnen

Dussen Castle, locally known as Kasteel Dussen, lies next to the village with the same name, in the North Brabant province in the Netherlands.

Dussen Castle didn't evolve out of an older building as many other castles did. We know its construction started in 1387 after Lord Arent van der Dussen got permission to build a fortified house, from Duke Albrecht. It was built as a square, with sides of some 28 meters, an entrance at its north side in between two heavy, round, projecting towers. The residential wings on the 3 other sides enclosed the raised courtyard. There probably was a square keep at the south east corner. The thickness of the walls of this keep and the outer walls of the castle varied from 2,7 till 3 meters. The eastern tower near the entrance gate had a pit prison.

This proud castle of Lord Arent van der Dussen was heavily damaged as a result of the flood of Saint-Elizabeth in 1421. Its rebuilding started half a century later in which the castle was significantly altered. During that, the outer walls were cut out on the inside, which reduced their thickness from 3 to 1,2 meters, to gain space. From these 15th century restorations not much remained because on April 7, 1573 Dussen Castle was besieged and taken by Spanish troops under command by Nicolaas and Harra Basta during the Eighty-Years War. This siege severely damaged the castle, especially its north west corner.

In 1607 the castle was sold to Lord Walraven, Baron of Ghent for fl 40.000,-. Lord Walraven partly rebuilt the castle; he didn't rebuilt the north western tower but did built an arcade around the courtyard. Due to financial needs Lord Walraven sold Dussen Castle in 1620 to Eduart Jacot van Axel from Alkmaar. Until the 20th century the castle remained in the possession of his descendants.

During the 18th and the 19th century the owners of Dussen Castle didn't reside there but in their properties in the Southern Netherlands (present-day Belgium). This caused the castle to fall in disrepair but also kept it from drastic renovations which would have destroyed its original appearance, as was the case with a lot of other Dutch castles in those days.

In 1901 the castle was handed over by the owners to a conventual order whose nuns resided in Dussen Castle until 1920. After that the castle stood empty for 4 years before it was bought by the Suringar family from Koudekerke. An eccentric female member of this family lived in the castle until her death in 1931. During nights she had herself guarded by 6 male residents of the village of Dussen and ordered that her donkey slept in a tower room while the guards slept in the arcade.

In 1931 the castle was put up for a public auction but because of a demolition ban, no buyers were found. In 1935 the castle was bought by the local authority of Dussen for fl 15.000,-. They started to restore the castle to make it usable as a town hall. These restorations were undone by heavy shelling in 1944; both towers were badly damaged and one wing collapsed. From 1947 until 1953 Dussen Castle was again rebuilt.

At present the castle is being used as a town hall.

Dussen Castle


Kasteel Onsenoort is een kasteel nabij het dorp Nieuwkuijk, in de Nederlandse provincie Noord-Brabant. De woontoren heeft een omvang van 13,5 x 10,5 m en is gebouwd met zware muren, stond geheel vrij en was destijds omgracht. De dikte van de muren bedraagt 2,5 m in de kelder en 2,2 m op de eerste verdieping.

Een weergang bekroonde waarschijnlijk het muurwerk. Onsenoort moet aan het eind van de 14e eeuw gebouwd zijn in plaats van een ouder kasteel en speelde een rol in de Brabants-Hollandse grenstwisten. In de loop van de eeuwen heeft de toren vele veranderingen ondergaan.

De weergang verdween zonder sporen achter te laten en oudere, kleinere vensters werden dichtgemetseld terwijl er in de zware muren grotere vensters werden aangebracht.

Geschiedenis
Middeleeuwen en de Spaanse Tijd
De oudste vermelding van Onsenoort dateert van 1266, toen Gerlach de Rovere genoemd werd als heer van Waalwijk, Drunen, Vlijmen en "Honsoirde". In 1368 werd het door Laureins van der Putte overgedragen aan Rutger den Ouden.

Het eerste kasteel ter plaatse heeft voortbestaan tot 1372, toen het door Brabanders onder leiding van Jan van Nederveen werd verwoest als gevolg van problemen die al in 1356 waren gerezen. Deze problemen hadden te maken met grensconflicten tussen het Graafschap Holland en het Hertogdom Brabant. Men vermoedt dat Nieuwkuijk vanaf 1374 tot Holland behoorde. De onfortuinlijke Rutger den Ouden en zijn zoon Willem hebben het verwoeste kasteel niet meer opgebouwd, maar Jan Cuyst van Wijck, schout van Vlijmen, die er in 1382 mee beleend was, pakte het werk aan en hij kreeg hiervoor van Albrecht van Beieren, ruwaard van Holland, zelfs vier jaar lang, vanaf 1388, een overheidssubsidie van 63 oude Vranckrijkse schilden (gouden munten) tot optimmeringe van het Huys (= kasteel) en den toorn te Hontsoord. In 1428 gaf de toenmalige heer, Arent van Wijk, nog een verklaring uit waarin hij stelde dat:

wy anders niet en weten men en heeft altijd ghehouden vanden heren van Hollant dien God ghenadich sy ende oec enhoerde wy nie van onsen ouderen gheseggen dat men ye Honsoerde van Brabant hielde of dat die vanden Bossche ye ennich in ghebieden hadden tot Honsoerde van rechts weghen.
Onsenoort werd hiermee erkend als een leen van de Graaf van Holland. Dit in tegenstelling tot Nieuwkuijk, dat een leen was van Hoogstraten.

De familie Cuyst van Wijck behield Onsenoort een eeuw lang. De naam Van Wijck had betrekking op het voormalige allodium Wijk. In 1396 erfde Arend van Wijck de heerlijkheid van Jan Cuyst. In 1436 kwam diens zoon, die ook Arend heette, aan de macht. In 1507 kwam het aan diens zoon Joost van Wijck. Deze was gehuwd met Agnes van Nedervenne, en mogelijk daarna met Catharina de Bever. In 1517 werd Hubrecht van Wijck, getrouwd met Catharina Beukelaer, de leenman. In 1554 kwam het aan de laatste telg, Agnes van Wijck, die trouwde met Karel van Malsen, heer van Goirle en Tilburg. Deze Karel maakte in 1566 deel uit van het Eedverbond der Edelen. Agnes en Karel overleden in 1583 respectievelijk 1587.

Het echtpaar had vijf kinderen. De tweede zoon, Adriaan van Malsen, gehuwd met Josina van Varik, werd heer van Onsenoort. Na zijn dood in 1638 kwam de heerlijkheid aan Karel van Malsen, die gehuwd was met Anna Maria van Arkel, een dochter van de heer van Ammerzoden. Karel overleed in 1672.

17e en 18e eeuw
In 1672 erfde Gerard van Poelgeest het kasteel en de bijbehorende bezittingen. Hij was heer van Hoogmade en getrouwd met Isabella van Malsen. Mogelijk is hij hertrouwd met Maria Ernestine van Merode. Toen Gerard in 1680 stierf werd Maria Ernestine met de heerlijkheid beleend. In 1690 werd de heerlijkheid verkocht aan Mattheus Hoeufft Sr. heer van Oyen gehuwd met Constantia Doublet vrouwe van Sint-Annaland. Deze militair heeft veel werk gemaakt van de beplanting rond het kasteel, zodanig zelfs dat stadhouder Willem III er de spot mee dreef. Mattheus Sr. stierf in 1720. Hij werd opgevolgd door zijn zoon Filips Hoeufft. In 1759 erfde Mattheus Hoeufft Jr. de heerlijkheid Oyen (bij Oss), Onsenoord en Nieuwkuik (bij Vlijmen) van zijn broer Phillipus Hoeufft. Mattheus Hoeufft Jr. was getrouwd met Anna Isabella van Nassau-LaLecq (1695-1765). De heerlijkheden werden in 1765 gelegateerd aan de derde broer Leonard Hoeufft (1697-1772) die zowel de heerlijkheid Onsenoord alsook Nieuwkuik in 1743 verkocht aan jhr. Joannes Half-Wassenaer (1706-1782).

Jan Half-Wassenaar was gehuwd met Johanna de Roy(e). Jan stierf in 1782. Nu kwam het leen aan zoon Bernard Half-Wassenaar, gehuwd met Petronella van Engelen. In 1787 werd het kasteel geplunderd door Pruissische soldaten en Orangisten.

Doch Bernard kwam weerom en werd later door Koning Lodewijk Napoleon nog benoemd tot ridder. Hij stierf in 1810, waarna het kasteel, nu zonder heerlijke rechten, in bezit kwam van Jacob Willem Half-Wassenaar, gehuwd met Barbara van Willigen. Jacob werd door Napoleon Bonaparte benoemd tot president van het kanton Waalwijk en in 1814 werd hij opgenomen in de ridderschap van Noord-Brabant, waar hij lid werd van de Provinciale Staten van Noord-Brabant. Na het overlijden van Jacob Willem in 1837 kwam het kasteel aan hun zoon, Frans Half-Wassenaar van Onsenoort, gehuwd met Anna van Rijckevorsel. In 1853 stierf Frans, waarop het kasteel geërfd werd door Julia Half-Wassenaar, gehuwd met Leopold de la Court. De familie De la Court was in 1823 in de adelstand verheven.

Leopold stierf in 1865, waarna zijn zoon, Josephus de la Court, het kasteel erfde. Deze was gehuwd met Marie Antoinette Béthune. Hij was lid van de Gedeputeerde Staten van Noord-Brabant. In 1903 moest hij het kasteel verkopen.

Religieuze bestemming

In 1903 werd het kasteel met de landerijen publiek verkocht. Abt Maréchal van de Cisterciënserabdij te Pont Colbert bij Versailles kocht het kasteel met wat grond, terwijl de rest van de 105 ha land in eigendom kwam van verschillende landbouwers uit de streek en aan de verzekeringsmaatschappij "Noord-Braband" uit Waalwijk. De abdij in Pont Colbert was in 1901 ten gevolge van de secularisatiepolitiek in beslag genomen. Heel wat Franse kloosterlingen zochten daarop een nieuw onderkomen in België of Nederland. De verkoopadvertentie kopte dan ook met zaken als contrée catholique en occasion exceptionelle pour convent ou pensionnat. In 1906 zijn enkele ingrijpende verbouwingen uitgevoerd, om het gebouw beter aan te passen aan zijn nieuwe bestemming. Zo kreeg het onder andere een kapel: Kapel Mariënkroon. Ook is bij die gelegenheid is de toren met één verdieping verhoogd. Sindsdien heeft het kasteel steeds dienstgedaan als Cisterciënzerklooster. Omstreeks 1920 konden de monniken weer terecht in Versailles en zij wilden het kasteel weer verkopen. Drie monniken bleven echter achter, er kwam een Nederlandse abt en in 1928 werd Onsenoord een zelfstandige priorij. Het complex werd in 1935 zelfs nog belangrijk uitgebreid met de bouw van een nieuwe vleugel. De abdij kreeg in 1937 de naam Mariënkroon, naar een voormalig klooster in het nabije Heusden. In 1992 werd de donjon door de monniken ter beschikking gesteld voor culturele activiteiten, in februari 1994 is in de toren de Stichting Honsoirde gevestigd.

Sind maart 2002 zijn gebouwen en terrein in handen gekomen van de stichting Mariapoli Mariënkroon, die onderdeel uitmaakt van de Focolarebeweging. Sinds zijn emeritaat in 2008 tot 2015 was aartsbisschop-emeritus Ad Simonis bewoner van de leefgemeenschap.

In 2007/ 2008 is de bodem van slotgracht van het kasteel aan grondig onderzoek onderworpen. Omdat de slotgracht op zijn diepste punt 8 meter diep is moest hierbij gebruikgemaakt worden van duikers. Hiervoor heeft heemkundekring Onsenoort de hulp ingeroepen van duikvereniging Gloriamaris uit 's-Hertogenbosch. Hierbij is een grote hoeveelheid flessen en aardewerk letterlijk boven water gekomen. Maar ook veel sierkoper werd opgedoken. Dit is door de kloosterorde van de Cisterciënzers in de Tweede Wereldoorlog in dat water gegooid. Hiermee hoopte men het uit handen van de Duitse bezetters te houden. Verder werden nog enkele scherven uit de ijzertijd gevonden. Al eerder werd in de omgeving een paalwoning uit die periode gevonden.

Gebouw
Het complex bestaat tegenwoordig voornamelijk uit gebouwen die ten behoeve van de Abdij Mariënkroon werden gebouwd en uit het einde der 19e en begin der 20e eeuw stammen. Van het oorspronkelijke kasteel is slechts de donjon overgebleven. Reeds in 1810 werd gemeld: van het oude kasteel is niets overig als een vierkanten Tooren. De muuren zijn verwonderlijk waardig regt uyt hoofde der Dikte. Men vind in dien Tooren verscheyden aansienlijke kamers, als mede het gevangenhuys. Deze toren stamt vermoedelijk uit de 14e eeuw, maar werd in 1906 nog verhoogd. Ze is onderkelderd en de kelder is voorzien van bakstenen tongewelven.
