
In the center of Tuscany, between Florence and Siena, Castel Pietraio with its medieval village stands out in the green frame of the Sienese Hills, a few kilometers from San Gimignano and other enchanting cities of art.

Its origins date back to the 10th century, when Ildebrando Lambardi married Countess Ava Zenovi (whose sarcophagus is still visible in Abbadia a Isola abbey) thus forming one of the most important families of the Valdelsa. The most ancient part of Castel Pietraio dates back to this period, the tower with Guelph battlements, while the remaining construction with the internal cloister dates back to the 14th century. Il castello di Staggia Senese o dei Franzesi si trova nell'omonima frazione di Poggibonsi in provincia di Siena.
Storia
Le prime notizie sul borgo fortificato risalgono al 994. I signori di Staggia (i Soarzi) divennero in seguito una delle più potenti consorterie feudali della Valdelsa, entrando a più riprese nelle lotte tra Firenze e Siena, poiché il loro territorio si trovava sul confine tra le due rivali. Il periodo di maggior splendore del casato fu il XII secolo, mentre nel secolo successivo, quando iniziava a svilupparsi il borgo ai piedi del castello grazie al passaggio di varianti della Francigena, decaddero gradualmente. Alla fine del secolo i Franzesi, famiglia originaria del Valdarno Superiore che si era arricchita con il commercio soprattutto con la Francia (da cui il nome), acquistò il castello, ingrandendolo e ristrutturandolo. Nel 1361 la famiglia subì il fallimento commerciale e la roccaforte venne comprata dai Fiorentini, come avamposto contro i senesi. Nel 1372 le mura vennero rafforzate, trovandosi spesso al centro di lotte di confine. Nel 1431, con la consulenza di Filippo Brunelleschi, le mura cittadine vennero raccordate al castello, che divenne "cassero".

Con l'introduzione delle armi da fuoco e con la conquista di Siena (1555) le fortificazioni divennero sostanzialmente inutilizzate.
Le mura sono oggi ben conservate e risalgono in gran parte all'intervento del 1372. Sono intervallate da torri di varia forma (quadrangolari, poligonali, oltre a una pseudo-ellittica non più esistente). Risultano ancora ben visibili le mensole in pietra spesso rinforzate da archi, che sostenevano il cammino di ronda. Il circuito murario è interrotto soltanto in corrispondenza dei due varchi di via Romana. Delle tre porte esistenti in origine (Porta Romana a sud, Porta Fiorentina a nord-ovest, Porta Lecchi a nord-est) restano soltanto le ultime due, entrambe a ridosso della rocca: Porta Romana fu fatta saltare dai tedeschi in ritirata nel 1944 assieme all'alto torrione che le sorgeva subito a ponente e agli edifici adiacenti.

Il castello
Il castello ha la forma quadrilatero irregolare e sorge su di un'altura. Il mancato allineamento agli assi viari del borgo rivela l'origine indipendente dei due nuclei. Al centro sorge il mastio quadrato, risalente all'epoca dei Soarzi, circondato da due recinti, secondo una ripartizione rara in Toscana. Sul recito più grande si ergono agli angoli due poderosi torrioni cilindrici, frutto delle aggiunte del XV secolo. Su questo lato si trovava il palazzo feudale del Franzesi, del XIV secolo, del quale restano alcuni portali, finestre lavorate e, all'interno del recinto, un grande caminetto. Sul torrione nord resta uno stemma.

Il recinto minore era usato come ambiente di servizio e luogo di rifugio per la popolazione in tempo di guerra. Vi si trovavano torri quadrate simili a quelle delle mura, ma solo una è oggi ben conservata.

L'unica porta di accesso al castello è raggiungibile grazie a una rampa che scavalca perpendicolarmente Porta Lecchi, creando due livelli stradali, unico esempio del genere in Toscana, che permettevano di dividere il flusso diretto al castello da quello sottostante.

Il castello fino ai primi anni duemila versava in stato di degrado, tuttavia era caratterizzato dalla presenza, al suo interno, di alberi da frutto (piantati quando vi alloggiavano contadini fino all'inizio degli anni ottanta) e da altri anche secolari, costituendo un ambiente molto suggestivo. Oggi appare nella veste dovuta ai restauri conclusi tra il 2005 e il 2006, durante i quali è stato eliminato tutto il patrimonio arboreo, al fine di consolidare le strutture sono stati eseguiti inserimenti in cemento e laterizi, mentre sul prospetto meridionale, che guarda verso il centro abitato, è stato collocato un camminamento in metallo.

Il castello è di proprietà privata ed è gestito dalla "Fondazione la Rocca di Staggia". La Rocca di Staggia è aperta al pubblico per 365 giorni all'anno.

Castello di Staggia Senese

La fortezza di Poggio Imperiale è un'architettura militare situata a Poggibonsi.
Storia
La fortezza venne costruita su progetto di Giuliano da Sangallo tra il 1488 e il 1511 e costituisce la realizzazione più importante tra quelle previste da Lorenzo il Magnifico per il rafforzamento delle difese territoriali, a seguito di episodi bellici che avevano visto, nel 1478 tutta la zona sud del dominio fiorentino saccheggiata dalle truppe aragonesi che aveva evidenziato l'inutilità delle strutture militare fin lì realizzate.

Nel progetto Giuliano da Sangallo ed il fratello Antonio, che si occupò dei lavori dal 1496, applicarono le più avanzate innovazioni nel campo della "fortificazione alla moderna", che proprio tra il XV e XVI secolo stava rivoluzionando l'architettura militare a seguito dell'introduzione della armi da fuoco. In particolare l'architettura della fortezza, che assume un ruolo importante nella storia dell'architettura militare, è caratterizzata dal fronte bastionato (tratti di mura da cui sporgono massicci torrioni), dall'assenza del camminamento di ronda in aggetto su beccatelli, e dalla forma poligonale dei bastioni. Quest'ultimo punto rappresenta per i Sangallo un'importante evoluzione, abbandonando le forme circolari dei bastioni utilizzate dalla bottega di Francione a cui hanno fatto riferimento negli anni della loro formazione professionale.

Sul colle denominato Poggio Imperiale, che domina l'abitato di Poggibonsi, non si volle solo realizzare una fortissima postazione militare ma una nuova città, da costruire secondo i canoni rinascimentali della città ideale, con una cittadella fortificata ed un perimetro murario esterno realizzato solo in parte.

Il progetto di realizzare una città sul colle di Poggio Imperiale non era nuova; nel luogo prescelto per la realizzazione dell'opera infatti sorgeva l'antica città di Poggiobonizio, potente feudo dei Conti Guidi conquistato e raso la suolo dai fiorentini nel 1270, ma sempre nella medesima area l'imperatore Arrigo VII nel 1313 voleva fondare la città di Monte Imperiale (progetto abortito per la morte dell'imperatore), invece della città rimase il nome (Imperiale) al colle dominate Poggibonsi.

L'opera di Giuliano da Sangallo rimase però incompiuta; molteplici furono le cause ma soprattutto influirono sia la morte del Magnifico nel 1492 sia l'evoluzione che ebbe il conflitto militare tra Firenze e Siena che fece perdere importanza al possesso del poggio. Grazie a queste cause l'opera rimase ad uno stato embrionale e non essendo stata contaminata da aggiunte successive è arrivata ad oggi sostanzialmente identica al progetto originario. Nella stagione 2014/2015 l'intero complesso ha subito importantissimi lavori di restauro durati da Settembre a Maggio i quali si sono conclusi con l'inaugurazione della fortezza restaurata il 7 giugno 2015.Le importanti opere di restauro hanno riportato alla luce la "porta di calcinaia",in precedenza ostruita da un grande cumulo di terra, la "porta della fonte",in precedenza murata con delle pietre e la "porta del giglio",precedentemente sbarrata da un cancello in quanto pericolante.I lavori hanno riguardato anche la "porta di San Francesco",che stava diventando sempre più avvolta dalla vegetazione, la pulizia delle mura da vegetazione spontanea ed alberi, e la creazione di un percorso turistico lungo le mura.

Architettura
Il complesso è costituito da un giro di mura che cingono quasi per intero la collina, ad eccezione del lato nord. L'ingresso alle fortificazioni avviene attraverso una porta situata ad occidente che ingloba nella sua struttura una torre più antica, questa torre è una testimonianza della cinta muraria di Poggiobonizio.

Le strutture che formano l'opera sono due: la cinta muraria, dotata di quattro porte di accesso, e la fortezza vera e propria.

Fortezza di Poggio Imperiale

Strozzavolpe Castle provides the classic backdrop for a classic legend. The castle was owned by generations and generations of the same family until it ended up in the hands of a famous Florentine lawyer. The castle was built in 1154 and its name ‘Strozzavolpe’ most probably comes from ‘Scoriavolpe’. It was built by Benuccio da Salimbeni and then sold to the Florentine Adimari family.
The present owner has carried out some important restoration work in order to bring the castle back to its original splendour. Anyone driving past, either on the Cassia road or the motorway, can’t help but notice and admire its authentic protective walls, classic drawbridge and majestic stone arch. This is a castle straight out of the pages of a fairy tale. Around the edge of the castle are several ancient buildings which, while they are not as old as the castle itself, are nonetheless of historical importance. Many myths and legends surround Strozzavolpe Castle, including stories of romance and bloody battles. The owners won’t confirm the suggestion that the castle might be haunted, although they certainly don’t deny the strange legends which have grown up around the it. One such tale tells of the ghost of a wolf which roams around the castle when there is a full moon.
It is said that when Bonifazio, Duke and Marquis of Tuscany, decided to construct the castle here, he didn’t care about the fact that there was a strange wolf which lived in the area and which even the most courageous knights were afraid of going near. He and his men hunted the wolf, although not even the most skilled huntsmen were able to get near the animal. The oddest part of the story is that the huntsmen claimed that the wolf kept its distance from the men by spitting flames from it mouth. The prince finally managed to catch the wolf by setting a trap hidden in the woods and then strangling it. The prince’s satisfaction didn’t last long as the court wizard told him that the castle would only survive as long as the wolf’s body. Thinking he could find a way to survive this curse, he had the wolf’s body embalmed and filled with liquid gold. He then had the body hidden in a secret place in the castle’s foundations and charged three knights with the duty of guarding the spot for the rest of their lives. Centuries later, the tale continues, a builder was working in the depths of the castle when he came across the treasure that was the gold-filled body of the wolf. No sooner had he laid his hands on it though, the three knights burst out and stole away with the wolf – hiding it in another secret place. Even today, when the moon is full, people claim to have spotted a large wolf prowling round the area and diving into the dry ditch that circles the castle.
‘Strozzavolpe’ means ‘fox strangler’ and it would seem that the wolf at Strozzavolpe Castle personifies the constant need to defend the castle. The central part of the castle and its vast rooms are decorated with ancient carvings. One of these rooms is the ‘Camera Rossa’ (Red Room), where Cassandra Franceschi was found in a compromising position with one of her husband’s (Giannozzo da Capparello) pageboys. Capparello pretended to turn a blind eye and then had the room sealed and left them to die there in each other’s company. Their cries can still be heard all over the castle, but especially in the room itself. An agitated ghost is often said to be the result a terrible crime, such as this, committed in the past. The spirit of the unfaithful Cassandra has not been soothed by the passage of time and still roams the castle today.
The land around Strozzavolpe Castle is equally rich in legend, such as the ‘casa delle suore e dei frati’, or the ‘house of the nuns and the monks’, where rattling chains and banging on the walls can be heard. It seems as if the wandering spirits are possessed and are filled with an urgent need to make themselves heard – perhaps in order to tell their stories. In 1970, while a team of builders were working in the castle, two interesting things took place. First, one of the battlements seemed to have been freshly rebuilt and the builder who had been working in that area disappeared. They took the battlement apart and discovered a tube inside containing a burnt parchment with an inscription in Gothic characters. The inscription described the story of a buried treasure. It was then discovered that the builder who had disappeared had in fact left town for an unknown destination with his whole family. Had he found a treasure in the castle? We may never know. The legends that surround Strozzavolpe Castle and the tales of ghosts and haunted rooms bring up a fundamental question: are there really troubled spirits who are anxious to contact us or, is it simply us human beings who are anxious to try to forge some link to the past and the dead?

Strozzavolpe Castle

Built on the ruins of a 9th century fortress, the castle was restored during the 12th century by Cistercian monks and is connected to Vulci by the Ponte del Diavolo bridge, which crosses the Fiora River.

The original 9th century structure was dedicated to San Mamiliano and destroyed by the Saracens.

It’s 12th century replacement couldn’t have been in starker contrast to the ancient abbey and was used as a refugee and hospital for pilgrims. The centre was run with the mysterious and later heretical Templar Knights.

In the 16th century, the castle was bought by Alessandro Farnese, otherwise known as Pope Paul III, and he restored it to his liking. Farnese then left the fortress to the Papal States, who valued it for the border it shared with the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

Unfortunately when Napoleon Bonaparte arrived he took everything of value in Tuscany for himself including this castle, and it remained in French hands until the Torlina family bought it back in 1859.

A striking and fitting companion to this ancient city, the castle now houses the Museo Nazionale di Vulci.

Castello della Badia

The castle of Poggiarello is located along the road that connects Caldana to San Giusto a Balli. The place is mentioned at the end of the thirteenth century in the Road Statute of Siena, but we know nothing about the history of the castle. The hamlet has a tower with a sloping base, and a second building also with battlements. Southward there are two sections of ancient walls with a guard tower at the corner, bordering a small courtyard. In the garden there is a chapel dedicated to S. Augusto and built in 1558 by Augusto Chigi, perhaps on a design of Baldassare Peruzzi.

Poggiarello di Toiano

his castle built in 1190 was destroyed by wars and rebuilt several times before being given in 1376 to Santa Caterina di Siena, which made it into a convent. He returned to the public domain and was restored in 1408. The banker Crescenzio Turamini who bought it in 1525, had it restored by Baldassarre Peruzzi, who gave it the current form. After 1555, it belonged for a moment to Cosimo I of Medicis. In 1802, new restoration, in the neoclassical style, of the facade of the villa, by Serafino Belli. Today, the buildings, a garden and two courtyards are surrounded by a wall. You enter a triangular courtyard which includes buildings for the service staff, then you reach a second courtyard paved with bricks, with the neoclassical style villa and the house of the guard opposite. The garden is accessed by two doors next to a well. This garden contains a chapel whose exterior is simple but nicely decorated inside. Near the chapel, a beautiful loggia nowadays has beautiful frescoes. You can go round the walls by a circular path, from which you can enjoy beautiful views. In the villa, you have to visit the pretty fresco by Baldassarre Peruzzi: the "Judgment of Paris".

Castello di Belcaro

La Rocca di Castellina in Chianti è un castello che si trova nell'omonimo comune in provincia di Siena.

Delle mura restano alcuni lunghi tratti attorno all'abitato antico del paese, ma nessuna delle due porte si è conservata: la Fiorentina venne distrutta durante la prima guerra mondiale e sostituita successivamente da un'apertura in stile. Il cassero è conservato in ottime condizioni, con due corpi di fabbrica quadrati e alte mura. Oggi è sede del Comune e dal 21 aprile 2006 è sede del Museo archeologico del Chianti senese, che presenta la storia dei paesaggi antichi dell'intero territorio chiantigiano, oltre a Castellina i comuni di Castelnuovo Berardenga, Gaiole in Chianti e Radda in Chianti.
Storia
Le prime menzioni scritte risalgono all'XI secolo, quando Castellina era un insediamento fortificato dei Conti Guidi che dipendeva dal vicino castello del Trebbio, nell'odierna località di Trebbia, frazione di Radda in Chianti. All'epoca il sito veniva infatti chiamato "Castellina de' Trebbiesi".

Dal 1193 i signori di Trebbio si accordarono coi Fiorentini per tenervi un presidio. Castellina, cresciuto di importanza, alla metà del XIII secolo entrò nella Lega del Chianti e in seguito fu capoluogo di uno dei tre terzieri della zona, con Radda e Gaiole.

Essendo vicina al confine tra Firenze e Siena, per tutto il medioevo la zona attorno al castello fu sede di scontri, con Castellina che mantenne a lungo il ruolo di roccaforte avanzata dei Fiorentini. Nel 1397 il castello venne attaccato e distrutto dalle truppe di Gian Galeazzo Visconti, signore di Milano alleato ai Senesi. Nel 1400 la Repubblica fiorentina ne tornò in possesso e decise di rafforzarne le difese, creando una cerchia muraria più grande e più massiccia, dalla forma di esagono irregolare e con numerose torri a base quadrata. Il sistema difensivo era composto, oltre che dalle mura, dove si aprivano due porte (la Fiorentina e la Senese), anche da un massiccio cassero merlato, posto nel punto più alto dell'abitato. Nella ricostruzione venne anche consultato, in corso d'opera, il famoso architetto Filippo Brunelleschi.

Il battesimo del fuoco del nuovo sistema difensivo avvenne nel 1452, quando fu cinto d'assedio per ben 44 giorni dal duca di Calabria, senza venire espugnato. In seguito le fortificazioni vennero ulteriormente rafforzate, con la collaborazione di Giuliano da Sangallo. Nel 1478 venne di nuovo attaccato dall'esercito aragonese e questa volta venne saccheggiato e semidistrutto. Nel 1483 tornò ai Fiorentini, che lo tennero fino all'unità d'Italia. L'abolizione della lega del Chianti risale invece al 1774, su decisione di Pietro Leopoldo di Lorena, ma il nuovo territorio della "Comunità di Castellina" venne fatto praticamente coincidere con l'antico terziere.

The Paneretta castle is situated in the Chianti Classico area on the western slopes of the dominating hills of the Elsa valley, looking towards San Gimignano.

It was built around an ancient sighting tower. The morning after the battle from Montaperti, the “Ghibellini” ordered to leave the castle of Cepparello in 1260. This place was an important suburb and fortress of this area. So the sighting tower becomes bigger and reaches its importance.

La rocca di Montestaffoli è una rocca costruita nel XIV secolo nel comune di San Gimignano.
Storia
Il poggio di Montestaffoli era, nell'Alto Medioevo, sede di una rocca posseduta dal vescovo di Volterra, che aveva giurisdizione politica sull'insediamento. Qui era stato istituito un mercato che godeva di una fiorente economia, grazie agli scambi con le città vicine (San Gimignano era infatti all'incrocio tra la via Francigena, sull'asse nord-sud, e la via che congiungeva Pisa con Siena).

La zona di Montestaffoli venne lambita dalle due cerchie murarie, finché nel 1353 i fiorentini, ai quali i sangimignanesi avevano offerto la loro città in cambio di protezione dopo l'epidemia e la carestia del 1348, costruirono l'attuale rocca.

Andata in rovina durante gli anni del Granducato di Toscana, venne restaurata solo nel Novecento; restano solo le mura e sono andati persi tutti gli ambienti.

Da alcuni anni viene usata come luogo per rappresentazioni e concerti nella stagione estiva, e recentemente vi sono anche state installate alcune opere d'arte contemporanea.

Rocca di Montestaffoli 

Recenti scavi archeologici hanno collocato l'origine di Montarrenti fra la metà del VII° e la metà dell’VIII° secolo come villaggio di capanne circondato da due palizzate lignee a difesa della parte bassa e alta del rilievo, diventato poi centro curtense di raccolta dei prodotti agricoli in età carolingia. Tra metà VIII° e IX° secolo si assiste ad una trasformazione dell’area di sommità: la palizzata è sostituita da un muro in pietra legato da malta.
Le più antiche notizie documentarie relative a Montarrenti (Monte Liurenti o Monte Lirrenti) risalgono invece al 1156 quando il vescovo di Volterra, Galgano Pannocchieschi, cita la località in una sua bolla.
Nel 1165 si trova nominato un certo "Baverii de Monte Arrenti" in tre documenti stipulati dallo stesso vescovo di Volterra. Nel 1178 Cattaneo da Montarrenti, per il comune di Siena, fu designato come amministratore delle miniere di argento della zona.
Agli inizi del Duecento, il Comune di Siena estese il suo dominio su una vasta area della Toscana meridionale e il 5 settembre 1217 i nobili e i tre consoli del castello giurarono fedeltà alla Repubblica di Siena. A partire da questo anno il Comune di Siena inviò ogni sei mesi nel castello un podestà. Questo fino al 1271 quando le autorità cittadine decisero l'abolizione della sede podestarile di Montarrenti causa il forte decremento demografico. Questo ci conferma che l'assetto urbanistico del castello ha avuto il suo massimo sviluppo proprio tra la fine del XII° e la prima metà del XIV° secolo, quando l'incremento della popolazione raggiunse a Montarrenti il punto più alto.
