The history of the castle and its grounds dates back to the 16th century and has included various distinguished occupants. In the large entrance hall we find the well-known Plantin family motto above the fireplace: “Labore et Constantia” The castle was renovated between 1927 and 1928 by Philippe Moretus de Bouchout, whose coat of arms is to be found on the façade together with that of Countess Legrelle. In 1986 the castle was bought and restored by the Jan Onzea family, a printer’s family from Borgerhout. On 4th December of that year it was opened as a restaurant with Bert Onzea as the manager. Kasteel Fruithof is no longer a blot on the landscape of Boechout. From its opening in December 1986 this stately building, with its unique location in a green open space on the edge of the metropolis, has been a centre where a wide range of customers find what they are looking for. Those who love to dine well, those attending a conference who wish for good results achieved in a peaceful atmosphere, families with something to celebrate and who appreciate a child-friendly environment and, since May 1998, a bistro, De Jongste Telg, in the castle’s former coach house. During the summer, when the weather is nice, you can drink your aperitif and coffee on the terrace, enjoying the peace of the beautiful park with its centuries-old trees and the wonderful view of the unique lake. Nor have the muses been neglected over the years. For twelve seasons the aperitif concerts on a Sunday morning grew into a musical feast appreciated far beyond the boundaries of Boechout. The combination of morning music and an appropriate meal was a huge success. For twelve years this was organized by Kasteel Fruithof itself with father Onzea as the driving force and sister Marleen responsible for the PR. After the death of the former in September 1999, Bert and sister Marleen decided to bring this concert tradition to an end. Two years later the thread was picked up again by the Culture Committee of the Davidsfonds of Boechout and the tradition continued with equal enthusiasm. The beautiful location and the high standard of the musicians remain the same. There is only one difference, four concerts each year instead of six. Art has always been important at Kasteel Fruithof. Sculptors, painters, photographers, over the years there have constantly been permanent exhibitions to be admired at the castle. Dans le vaste hall d’entrée, la célèbre maxime de la famille Plantin trône encore au-dessus de l’âtre: “Labore et Constantia” Le château fut rénové en 1927 et 1928 par Philippe Moretus de Bouchout dont les armoiries et celles de la comtesse Legrelle ornent la façade avant. Le château fut acquis et restauré en 1986 par la famille Jan Onzea, une famille d’imprimeurs originaire de Borgerhout (www.onzea.be). Le 4 décembre de la même année, il fut ouvert au grand public en tant que restaurant sous la direction de Bert Onzea. Kasteel Fruithof n’est plus, depuis longtemps déjà, un simple point sur la carte de la commune de Boechout. Depuis son ouverture en décembre 1986, ce prestigieux bâtiment, avec sa situation unique dans un cadre verdoyant aux abords de la métropole, est devenu un centre accessible à un large public en quête d’exigences particulières. Les amoureux de gastronomie y sont comblés dans une atmosphère de détente, les congressistes s’y réunissent dans un havre de paix et de création, des familles y organisent des fêtes dans un environnement parfaitement sécurisé pour les enfants et, depuis mai 1998, un bistro De Jongste Telg, aménagé dans l’ancienne remise à calèches du château, y accueille les amateurs d’authenticité et de convivialité. Par beau temps, au cours des mois d’été, l’endroit invite à prendre l’apéritif et le café sur la terrasse ensoleillée et y savourer la quiétude du splendide parc avec ses arbres séculaires et la vue magnifique sur l’étang de toute beauté. Même les Muses n’y ont pas été oubliées au fil des années. Pendant douze saisons, le dimanche matin, des concerts apéro y furent organisés et se développèrent rapidement en une fête de la musique très appréciée loin au-delà des limites de la commune de Boechout. Les matinées musicales combinées à un repas approprié connurent un véritable succès. Celles-ci furent organisées et gérées pendant douze ans directement par la famille sous l’impulsion du père Onzea et les talents de relations publiques de Marleen, la sœur de Bert. Lorsque le père décéda en septembre 1999, Bert et Marleen décidèrent de mettre un terme à cette tradition de concerts. Celle-ci reprit toutefois deux ans plus tard en collaboration avec le Conseil Culturel et le Fonds David de Boechout. La tradition se poursuit encore aujourd’hui avec le même enthousiasme. Le cadre superbe et le niveau élevé des musiciens sont demeurés inchangés; la seule différence est la fréquence des concerts: quatre par an au lieu de six. L’Art a toujours occupé une place importante au Kasteel Fruithof. Sculpteurs, peintres et photographes y présentent régulièrement leurs œuvres. Au fil de toutes ces années, de nombreuses expositions permanentes ont été organisées au sein du château et le sont encore aujourd’hui. In de grote inkomhal vinden we de bekende familiespreuk van Plantin boven de haard: “Labore et Constantia” Het kasteel werd verbouwd tussen 1927 en 1928 door Philippe Moretus de Bouchout wiens wapenschild, samen met dat van de gravin Legrelle, aan de voorgevel is terug te vinden. Het kasteel werd aangekocht en gerestaureerd in 1986 door de familie Jan Onzea, een drukkersfamilie uit Borgerhout (www.onzea.be). Het werd als restaurant geopend op 4 december van dat jaar met als zaakvoerder Bert Onzea. Het Kasteel Fruithof is al lang geen witte vlek meer op de kaart van de gemeente Boechout. Van bij de opening in december 1986 fungeert dit statige gebouw, met zijn unieke ligging in de open groene ruimte aan de rand van de metropool, als een centrum waar een ruim publiek zijn gading vindt. Liefhebbers van lekker tafelen in een ontspannen atmosfeer, congresgangers die in een sfeer van rust tot goede resultaten willen komen, families die wat te vieren hebben én een kindvriendelijke omgeving op prijs stellen, en sinds mei 1998 een bistro De Jongste Telg, in het voormalige koetshuis van het kasteel. Bij mooi weer kan tijdens de zomermaanden het aperitief en koffie gebruikt worden op het terras om er te genieten van de rust in het mooie park met zijn eeuwenoude bomen en het prachtige zicht op de unieke vijver. Ook de muzen werden in de loop der jaren niet verwaarloosd; twaalf seizoenen lang groeiden de aperitiefconcerten op zondagmorgen uit tot een muzikaal hoogfeest dat tot ver buiten de gemeentegrenzen gewaardeerd wordt. De combinatie van ochtendlijke muziek en een aangepast diner was een schot in de roos. Twaalf jaar werden deze in eigen beheer georganiseerd en dit dankzij de hulp van stuwende kracht vader Onzea en de P.R. van zus Marleen. Na het overlijden van vader in september 1999 besloten Bert en Zus Marleen deze concerttraditie te stoppen. Twee jaar later werd de draad heropgeraapt door een samenwerking met de Culturele Raad en het Davidsfonds van Boechout. Deze fakkel is met eenzelfde geestdrift overgenomen. De mooie lokatie en het hoge niveau van muzikanten blijft, enig verschil per jaargang vier concerten i.p.v. zes. Verdere informatie bij de nieuwtjes. De kunst heeft steeds centraal gestaan in Kasteel Fruithof. Beeldhouwers, schilders, fotografen, steeds zijn er al die jaren permanente tentoonstellingen in het kasteel te bewonderen.
