HISTORY OF FONTANGES When you arrive in the Hostelerie de Fontanges, wich is a short distance from the old city of the Ruthenes, you will be surprised by the impressive historical residence that has recently been restored and where you will be welcomed as a guest. Throught the dining room windows, you can enjoy the splendour of the illuminated cathedral clock tower. Equally surprising is the name of the Chateau Why Fontanges ? FONTANGES means : Font Tencha, the source of the red clay of Causse. The well-informated tourist wiil want to go deeper and know the history of the Château. Here are the main facts : From 1280, the land belonged to the Balaquier family. In 1422 the lord of Belcastel, Alzias de Saunhac owned a third of the land, the remaining percentage belonged to the chapter of Rodez. At the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th century some additional parts were added to the Château, for exemple, a stucco chimney was built in the kitchen. In 1564 a building with a tower was constructed and called "the new house of FONTANGES". The present Château was built between the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th century for a rich draper from the city of Rodez, Raymond d'Austry. He built the tower on five levels that can still be seen from the central courtyard of the hotel ; The tower was designed by Pierre Tournie D'Ambec from Rodez, and then Bernard and Antoine Persec from Ste Radegonde continued the work. Another mason from Ambec erected a second tower on the Floyrac side with Fraissinhon, a tiler, completing the work. On one of the two chimneys, Raymond d'Austry sculpted his coat of arms. The design is of an ostrich and it reads "figure boufarele de l'Auster ou vent du midi". In the present dining room of the Château, which was previously the largest room, one can admire the French style ceiling painted by an artist who also decorated the joists of another hotel in Rodez built by Raymond d'Austry that no longer stands. Unfortunately the murals can no longer be seen. At the time, each space between the windows and the facing walls was decorated in a trompe l'oeil style resembling statues in their alcoves. Hostellerie de Fontanges In 1654, the widow of Jean d'Austry who was the President of the Presidial of Rodez rented the estate and took up residence. The management of the estate passed to the Chartreux then the Jacobins of Rodez who maintained the estate regularly. The estate was sold as state property on 11 March 1781. A quelques encablures de la vieille cité des Ruthènes, le touriste qui arrive à l’Hostellerie de Fontanges, peut être surpris par l’imposante demeure d’époque, restaurée depuis peu, dont il sera l’hôte, d’où il pourra, le soir venu, jouir de la splendeur du fin clocher illuminé de la cathédrale, des fenêtres de la salle à manger. Il peut être surpris également par le nom de ce château : « FONTANGES »… Pourquoi ? La duchesse de Fontanges, disparue à Port-Royal, de mort douteuse, a séjourné au château de Mézillac dans le Cantal, non loin de Mur-de-Barrez en Aveyron. Alors, en un galop, serait-elle venue passer une nuit ou deux dans ce château admirer la magnificence de ce clocher déjà dressé depuis deux siècles et prier la Vierge protectrice entourée des quatre anges thuriféraires ? Trêve d’imagination… Marie-Angélique n’a pas noué les rubans de sa coiffure dans une des chambres de ce castel… C’est dommage pour l’histoire. Tout simplement, FONTANGES veut dire : Font Tencha, source rouge d’argile du Causse. Le touriste, en voyageur averti, veut aller plus loin et connaître l’histoire du château. En voici les grandes lignes : Dès 1280, la seigneurie est à la famille Balaguier. En 1422, le seigneur de Belcastel, Alzias de Sauhnac en possède le tiers, le reste étant au chapitre de Rodez. Des éléments de construction existaient à la fin du XV et au début du XVI siècle dont la cuisine avec une cheminée en stuc. En 1564, s’éleva une bâtisse avec tour qu’on appela » la maison neuve de Fontanges ». Le château actuel fut bâti à la fin du XVI et au début du XVII par un riche drapier du bourg de Rodez, Raymond d’Austry. Il fit dresser la tour de cinq niveaux que l’on peut voir encore dans la cour centrale de l’hôtel, tour conçue par le maître d’œuvre Pierre Radegonde, dont le fils pose la première pierre le 22 janvier 1590. Un autre maçon d’Ambec éléva la seconde tour côté Floyrac et un couvreur Fraissinhon les acheva. Sur une des deux cheminées, Raymond d’Austry fit sculpter ses armoiries qui portent une autruche et la figure boufarèle de l’auster ou vent du midi. Dans la salle à manger actuelle qui fut la grande salle du château, on peut admirer le plafond à la française peint par un artiste qui avait orné également les solives d’un autre hôtel construit à Rodez par Raymond d’Austry, aujourd’hui disparu. Les peintures murales n’existent plus. A l’époque chaque trumeau, chaque espace entre les fenêtres et en vis à vis représentaient, en trompe l’œil des niches garnies de statues. Hostellerie de Fontanges En 1654, la veuve de Jean d’ Austry qui fut président du Présidial de Rodez, affermera le domaine et se réserva l’habitation. L’exploitation passa aux Chartreux puis aux Jacobins de Rodez qui l’affermèrent régulièrement. Le domaine fut vendu comme bien national le 11 mars 1791.
