The owner of the original Gothic castle became the Pernštejn family at the end of the 15th century. Přerov came into the possession of Karel the Elder of Žerotín at the turn of the 17th century, at which time the remodelling of the castle into a Renaissance Château culminated. The majority of the construction adaptations in the interiors and the exteriors of the château were finally carried out in the first half of the 19th century by Count Antonín Magnis and his son Vilém. The château was no longer used for housing purposes by the end of the 19th century. The château was taken over by the town of Přerov after the founding of Czechoslovakia which decided to adapt the château interiors for museum exhibitions and a depository. V zámku sídlí od roku 1888 Muzeum Jana Ámose Komenského. V expozicích muzea se nalézají vzácné mineralogické, entomologické a archeologické exponáty, dále dokumenty vážící se k životu J. A. Komenského s dobovou rekonstrukcí školních tříd. Dále je možné zhlédnout expozice národopisu Hané a ukázky zvonů ze světoznámé zvonařské dílny Dytrychových v Brodku u Přerova. Ve sklepních prostorách zámku se nalézají expozice doby pravěké. V bývalé zámecké konírně vznikla kavárna s výstavními prostory a v zámeckém příkopu venkovní amfiteátr. Jedná se o nejvýznamnější kulturní centrum na území města Přerova. Zámek prošel v roce 2006 celkovou rekonstrukcí a je dominantou městské památkové zóny v Přerově.
