The Kyrburg , also called Kirburg , is the ruin of one at about 300 m above sea level. NHN built hilltop castle between the valleys of the Nahe and the Hahnenbach high above the town of Kirn in the Bad Kreuznach district in Rhineland-Palatinate and is the town's landmark .
History
The castle was first mentioned in 1128 in a document from Count "Emich de Kirberc".
The castle was one of the ancestral castles of the Wildgraves (successors of the Emichons ). By the end of the 13th century, the Wildgraves had divided into several lines, one of which was named after the Kyrburg. In 1409 the Rheingrafen took over the property by marriage.
In the Thirty Years' War by the Spaniards , Sweden occupied and the imperial troops, she came in 1681 in the hands of the French. Eight years later, the fortifications were renewed. In 1734, again under French occupation, the fortress was blown up during the War of the Polish Succession . The castle ruins then served the people of Kirner as a quarry. In 1764, Prince Johann Dominik zu Salm-Kyrburg had the garrison house built, which today houses the Kyrburg restaurant and the well-known whiskey museum in the cellar .
In 1908 the castle complex came into the possession of the princes of Salm-Salm , and since 1988 it has been owned by the city of Kirn.
Todays use
As an open-air stage, the castle ruins offer a dramatic backdrop for cultural events. In the past few years several operas (especially by Giuseppe Verdi ) have been performed there, as well as various theater performances, concerts and festivities.
