Hattem Castle, the smallest castle in the Netherlands, is hidden in a Roermond city park. HISTORIE Het kasteeltje dateert uit 1718 Stadspark Hattem van de Gemeente Roermond ligt aan de zuidrand van de stad, in het Roerdal en de Hambeek is een aftakking van de Roer. De Roer drukt een duidelijke stempel op het hele park, de bodem bestaat uit rivierklei en dit is een vruchtbare grondsoort voor het rijke aantal populieren, beuken, eiken, noten en platanen. In het park Hattem ligt het Kasteeltje Hattem, het kleinste kasteel van Nederland, vroeger geschreven als Hattum. Bij de stadsarchivaris is betrekkelijk weinig bekend over de historie van het kasteel. De oudste geschiedenis van het landgoed voert terug naar het begin van de 15e eeuw, waarschijnlijk is in het bos op de oever van de Roer een woontoren gebouwd als vroegste voorloper van het huidige kasteel. De huidige vorm van het kasteeltje dateert uit 1718. Het huis heette toen Horst te Roerbosch. De bouwer was de familie Holthausen. Het terrein was in de 18e eeuw een buitenplaats waar ook de boerderij "Roer" gelegen was. Het landhuis, ook wel het kleinste kasteel van Nederland genoemd, bezit een onregelmatige omgrachting gevormd door een vijver, die weer omgeven wordt door een geometrisch lanenstelsel in de vorm van een vork. Opvallend is de schuin geplaatste opstelling van de koetshuizen ten opzichte van het kasteeltje. In de 19e eeuw werd de familie Michiels van Kessenich eigenaresse. In 1954 heeft de Gemeente Roermond Kasteeltje Hattem gekocht. Het was toen zeer uitgewoond, want na 1944 hadden er veel politieke gevangenen en repatrianten uit Indonesië gewoond. In 1962 heeft het park de huidige indeling gekregen, toen is de nieuwe Maasbrug geopend met een tentoonstelling rond Hattem. De rond het kasteel liggende landerijen werden omgetoverd tot stadspark en opengesteld voor het publiek. Het park is aangelegd in de Engelse landschapsstijl. Enkele bomen zijn dan ook meer dan honderd jaar oud, zoals de Oosterse beuk en de Sequoia Mammoetboom naast het kasteeltje. In 1966 werd voor de eerste keer het internationaal befaamde Hammerveld Jazz-Festival georganiseerd, daar stonden toen de hoge adel van de Amerikaanse jazz op het podium. Later werd dit festival het North Sea Jazz. De eerste horeca uitbater was de heer Eric Klinkert, hij opende in 1975 “Tap en Roosterplaats Kasteeltje Hattem”. In die tijd was het kasteel wit bepleisterd. In het park is sinds 1988 het Nationaal Indiëmonument gevestigd dat in 2003 uitgebreid is met het monument voor Vredesoperaties van de VN. Tijdens de herdenking van oorlogsslachtoffers komen ieder jaar in september 10.000 veteranen met hun familieleden hierheen. In 1989 zijn het kasteel en de bijbehorend koetshuizen grondig verbouwd tot restaurant en hotel, later zijn de kleine en de grote serre aangebouwd. De huidige uitbaters hebben in december 2004 het Kasteeltje een eigentijdse inrichting gegeven.
