The Castle of San Michele is located on one of the highest hills of Cagliari. The main plant, probably of a single tower, is from the Byzantine Period or first “Giudicale” Period (10th century AD) and it had the defensive function of Santa Igia. In 1327, after the Catalan conquest of Cagliari, the castle was offered to Berengar Carroz. After the fall of the “Giudicato” of Arborea, its defensive role became secondary. It was with the Count Giacomo Carroz that the castle became one of the most luxurious residences in Sardinia. The last member of the Carroz family, who lived in the castle, was the unfortunate Countess Violante, who died in 1511. After her death the castle was then included among the goods of the Spanish Crown. In 1652 it was used as a hospital during the black plague. During the XVIII century, with the Austrians first and then with the Savoy, the castle suffered a new period of decadence. From 1820 to 1848 it became a disabled barracks; in 1895 it was bought by a private owner, Roberto di San Tommaso, who committed its restoration to the architect Dionigi Scano and planted the still existing pine forest. In 1930s the hill and the castle became a military domain, while in 1966 the excavation works of the castle began by the architect Renato Salinas. The marbles and friezes from the Basilica of San Saturno of Cagliari, discovered during the excavations, were reused by Carroz to restore the masonry. Il castello San Michele è un edificio fortificato, risalente al periodo giudicale, che sorge sull'omonimo colle di Cagliari. Gli scavi del 1990 hanno messo in luce i resti di una chiesa campestre, probabilmente di periodo altomedievale, sulla quale sorse in seguito il castello, almeno nel XII secolo, a difesa della città di Santa Igia, capitale del Giudicato di Cagliari. Il complesso presenta tre torri e un fossato che circonda la struttura. Il periodo più importante del Castello è senza dubbio tra il 1350 e il 1511, periodo in cui fu abitato dalla Famiglia Carroz, nobile casata spagnola. Successivamente fu abbandonato e utilizzato come lazzaretto durante l'epidemia di peste "di Sant'Efisio" (1652-1656). Fu nuovamente fortificato in funzione difensiva degli attacchi francesi tra Seicento e Settecento. Intorno al 1940, fu presidiato dalla Regia Marina (poi Marina Militare) e poi sdemanializzato fino a passare allo Stato e al Comune di Cagliari. Attualmente il Castello ha subito una sostanziale modificazione nella struttura, adibita a Centro d'Arte e Cultura.
