La Rocca d'Olgisio is one of the most ancient fortresses of the Piacentino, as well as an inestimable architectural jewel of incredible complexity. Tradition has it that the castle belonged to a nobleman named Giovannato at the beginning of the 5th century. The earliest certain information that we have received dates back to 1037 when Giovanni, a canon in the cathedral of Piacenza, ceded the property to the monks of San Savino, who maintained it until 1296. For a hundred years, the historically turbulent period was the subject of numerous disputes between nobles and knights, including the Visconti, the Malaspina and the counts Zileni Dal Verme. During the Second World War it was the headquarters of the second division of the partisan of Piacenza and for this reason it was made the subject of artillery shots and attacks by the German troops in the area. On the doorframe that allows entry from the third wall in the courtyard is carved the motto Arx fearless (fearless fortress or fortress that fears nothing), this access was equipped until the nineteenth century with a drawbridge and protected by a gate railing. Inside the courtyard there is a well, about fifty meters deep, on which legends of secret passages and escape routes from the castle persist. On the whole, which is very complex, we can see: the oratory, the bell tower, the donjon with frescoed halls and a sixteenth-century lookout gallery. Outside, just beyond the walls, there are some caves that housed a prehistoric necropolis, are linked to legendary and sacred events: the cave of the saints (Faustina and Liberata), the conscripts and the cypress. La Rocca, arranged on several levels, with an almost pyramidal development that converges in the central body of the building, the fortress has six orders of defensive walls, which descend down to the valley towards the rivers Tidone and Chiarone. Between the first and second walls, in a group of seventeenth-century rustic houses, there are rooms available as accommodation. Equipped with a kitchenette and a living room with fireplace, they feature ceilings with wooden beams, terracotta floors and period furniture, which give a cozy atmosphere, typical of a home. The Bengalli family, which has permanently resides here since 1979, manages both the Bed & Breakfast activities and the other services available at the fortress. La Rocca d'Olgisio è un imponente complesso fortificato posto su di una rupe scoscesa a cavallo tra la val Tidone e la val Chiarone nel comune di Pianello Val Tidone, in provincia di Piacenza. È situato su un ripido crinale a 564 m s.l.m. di altezza che, in una zona appenninica caratterizzata da non rilievi non elevati, permette una vista panoramica sulla pianura Padana e le valli circostanti. La tradizione vuole che il castello appartenesse all'inizio del V secolo a un nobile di nome Giovannato. Le prime notizie certe che ci sono pervenute risalgono al 1037 quando Giovanni (canonico nella cattedrale di Piacenza) cedette la proprietà ai monaci di San Savino, che la mantennero fino al 1296. Per un centinaio d'anni, periodo storicamente turbolento, si succedettero vari proprietari fino al 1378 quando Gian Galeazzo Visconti assegnò la rocca e il feudo a Jacopo Dal Verme, famoso capitano di ventura di origine veronese. I Dal Verme la mantennero, con vari periodi di interruzione, fino all'estinzione della famiglia nel XIX secolo. Con vari passaggi di mano, durante i quali venne completamente depredata degli arredi, arrivò nel 1979 alla famiglia Bengalli, che ha provveduto alla ristrutturazione e al ripristino dell'antico splendore. Durante la Seconda guerra mondiale fu sede di una brigata della I divisione partigiana di Piacenza e per questo motivo venne fatta oggetto di tiri di artiglieria e attacchi da parte delle truppe tedesche presenti nella zona. La rocca Tre cinte murarie, di cui l'ultima costruita nell'Ottocento, circondano il complesso di fabbricati di epoche diverse a cui si accede attraverso due ingressi. Sullo stipite del portone che permette l'ingresso dalla terza cinta muraria nel cortile è scolpito il motto Arx impavida (fortezza impavida ovvero fortezza che nulla teme), questo accesso era dotato fino all'inizio dell'Ottocento di ponte levatoio e protetto da un'inferriata a saracinesca. All'interno del cortile è situato il pozzo, profondo una cinquantina di metri su cui insistono leggende di passaggi segreti e vie di fuga dal castello. Nel complesso, che è molto articolato, possiamo vedere: l'oratorio, la torre della campana, il mastio con saloni affrescati e un loggiato di vedetta cinquecentesco. All'esterno, poco oltre le cinte di mura, vi sono alcune grotte che ospitavano una necropoli preistorica, sono legate ad avvenimenti leggendari e sacri: la grotta delle sante (Faustina e Liberata), dei coscritti e del cipresso.
