History The Castle of Tures is built by the dominant family of the valley, the Barons of Taufers, in the early twelfth century in a dominant position, flanked by the imposing panorama of the Dolomite peaks. However, when in 1340 the branch of the Tures family became extinct, the castle passed into the ownership of several families, but fell in the course of the years in ruins. At that time the castle consisted only of a keep, the palace, a tower and a further building. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Ludwig Lobmayr reestablished the structure for the first time and in the second post-war period the Benedictine abbot Hieronymus Gassner completely restored the walls and rebuilt the tower. The complex then presents itself today in different architectural elements: a Romanesque part, originally from the period of the Lords of Taufers and a Gothic section dating back to the time of the Bishops of Bressanone. The habitable tower with double arched windows, the keep and the chapel of the castle in Romanesque style date back to the first period of construction of the thirteenth century while doors and drawbridges added are dated to 1500. Since 1977 the castle has been owned by the Castelli dell'Alto Adige Association and a large part of the entire structure is now accessible to the public, attracting over 70,000 visitors each year. There are over 64 well-appointed rooms, of which about two-thirds are clad in pine, including a chapel with frescoes by Friedrich Pacher, the armory, the library, the audience hall, the prince's room and also an inn , ideal for offering visitors a break after a visit. Il castello di Tures (in tedesco Burg Taufers) è un castello medioevale che sorge presso Campo Tures, nella Val di Tures, una perpendicolare della Val Pusteria. Il castello si erge su un promontorio che forma una chiusa naturale, chiamata Klapf, la quale dà geograficamente inizio alla Valle Aurina, mentre la località Drittelsand, posta a settentrione del castello, appartiene ancora al comune di Campo Tures. Cenni storici Originariamente di proprietà dei signori di Taufers, i nobiliari e dinasti, nonché dal 1215 ministeriali della chiesa vescovile di Bressanone che lo eressero nel primissimo Duecento, fu trasformato in abitazione residenziale nel XV-XVI secolo. Dopo una fase di decadenza, il castello è stato rimesso in sesto nel secondo dopoguerra dall'abate benedettino Hieronymus Gassner, originario di Ybbsitz nella Bassa Austria. Dal 1977 il Castello è stato acquistato dal Südtiroler Burgeninstitut ("Istituto sudtirolese per il mantenimento dei castelli"). Oggi è uno dei più interessanti castelli medioevali della provincia autonoma di Bolzano. In tutto sono presenti 64 stanze, circa 24 delle quali sono interamente in legno. Nella cappella ci sono affreschi della scuola di Michael Pacher. Interessanti sono anche l'armeria, la biblioteca, la stanza dei principi (la Fürstenzimmer) e la sala delle udienze. Nei sotterranei c'è il carcere. Il castello è visitabile in giorni prestabiliti e ospita di volta in volta mostre e concerti.
