The medieval Volterraio Castle on the Isola d’Elba, reopened to the public in 2016, is found at the top of a high plain on the border between the towns of Portoferraio and Rio nell’Elba, and dates to the 12th century. It is believed that its name comes from the Latin Vultur (vulture), but it could also derive from the architect Vanni Gherardo Rau who came from Volterra and was hired by the Pisans in 1231 to fortify the castle built nearly 200 years prior. Beginning at the end of the 4th century CE, the top of the hill where the building is located was used as a “high plain fortress,” necessary for the strategic importance Elba had acquired in the Tyrrhenian Sea and for the presence of mineral resources. Volterraio was later made part of the Island’s defense system devised by the Republic of Pisa. Thanks to impressive reinforcements carried out around 1440, the castle was able to resist an attack by the Turks in 1544. Centuries later, in 1798, French troops based in Portoferraio further strengthened the stronghold, but a civic uprising half-destroyed the complex, and from that moment it was definitively abandoned. Volterraio Castle The castle has a hexagonal plan, while the quadrangular tower stands in the best point for watch duty and, together with the defensive wall, is the oldest part of the fortress – making it a precious testimony of Elba’s defences. The entrance to the tower is connected to the chemin de ronde (a patrol path atop the castle’s battlement) by a wooden drawbridge. La fortezza del Volterraio, nota anche come castello del Volterraio, è una fortificazione costiera situata nel territorio comunale di Portoferraio, sull'isola d'Elba, all'altitudine di 394 m. Storia Il complesso fortificato, che nei documenti duecenteschi è chiamato Monte Veltraio, fu costruito attorno all'anno Mille, nel punto in cui probabilmente sorgeva una preesistente struttura di epoca etrusca; nei pressi del sito è stata rinvenuta una moneta bronzea di Volterra coniata tra il IV e il III secolo a.C. insieme a proiettili di piombo per fionda, frammenti di bronzetti figurati e resti di vasellame in bucchero.[1] La fortezza venne ristrutturata in epoca tardoduecentesca, su probabile progetto di Vanni di Gerardo Rau, per adeguarla alle esigenze difensive dell'epoca («...res omnes necessarias ad defensam insule Ilbe...», come si legge in un documento pisano del 1298)[2]. Nel 1544 la rocca fu brevemente assediata da Khayr al-Dīn[3] e successivamente, nel 1553, da Dragut.[4] Il complesso architettonico militare svolgeva funzioni di avvistamento ad ampio raggio lungo il tratto costiero settentrionale dell'isola e verso il mare prospiciente; quando la zona entrò a far parte del granducato di Toscana, la fortezza fu integrata, seppur ubicata in posizione isolata, al sistema difensivo che veniva allestito dai Medici nel cuore della cittadina di Portoferraio. Il complesso continuò a svolgere le proprie funzioni anche in epoca settecentesca sotto i Lorena, per poi divenire un presidio delle truppe napoleoniche sul finire del secolo. Proprio nel 1798 vi fu un'insurrezione contro i militari francesi che portò alla semidistruzione del complesso, da allora definitivamente abbandonato. Una serie di restauri condotti a partire dal 2013 hanno permesso di recuperare ciò che restava dell'antica fortificazione. La fortezza del Volterraio, che si presenta sotto forma di imponenti ruderi alla sommità dell'omonimo poggio, si articola a pianta esagonale ed è caratterizzato da strutture murarie interamente rivestite in pietra, alla cui base sono visibili in alcuni punti tracce di più antiche mura di epoca etrusca e romana. Nonostante lo stato di rudere, è ancora oggi visibile parte dell'aspetto imponente che originariamente caratterizzava il complesso difensivo.
