The Château d'Orion is a guesthouse and event location in the small town of Orion, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in south-western France. It was built in the 17th century as a manor house. Since its construction it has been a contact point for the nearby population and is rooted in the Béarn region. History Château d’Orion is a typical Béarnaise manor house which has been enlarged and extended over the years. In 2003, the house was completely renovated preserving many original features and furnishings and these can be seen throughout the whole year. Originally built as an abbaye laique, from the 17th century to the French Revolution the former owners of the château, the Casamayor family, looked after the nearby church. Following them the family of Jean-Ninon Larrouy bought the property; their wealth was based on trading the famous Bayonne ham. Through the heirs Louis and afterwards Henriette Larrouy, the manor came into the possession of the famous French surgeon Paul Reclus. In Paris, he carried out experiments with cocaine as an anaesthetic and he invented the Pommade de Reclus. The French writer Henri de Régnier dedicated a sonnet to Reclus' daughter, Madeleine. It says, "I love your house that bears a name of a star which lighten your eyes." Paul Reclus' brothers were also well-established characters at that time. Élisée Reclus was one of the most famous anarchists in France and a world-famous geographer. and Armand Reclus played a part as an engineer of the Panama Canal. His descendant, Jean Labbé, married Marguerite Bérard, the daughter of the former education secretary of France, Léon Bérard, in the 1950s. Madame Labbé still lives in the Château d’Orion. Château d´Orion today The grounds extend to 30 hectares. Since the house was purchased by the German Premauer family in 2003, much of the château has been renovated and renewed. The company Château d’Orion runs the manor as a guesthouse and event location. A local association organizes events at regular intervals, including readings, concerts and other cultural events, to preserve Château d’Orion as a social and cultural center of this region.

Le château d'Orion est un château du XVII siècle, situé dans le village d'Orion, dans le département des Pyrénées Atlantiques. Situation géographique Le château d'Orion se situe à Orion, entre Pau et Biarritz, dans le Béarn. Le chemin de Saint Jacques de Compostelle passe par le village d’Orion. Historique Le château d'Orion s’est transformé au cours des siècles au cœur de la campagne béarnaise. Il a conservé tous ses souvenirs intacts au travers de son mobilier, les portraits des propriétaires successifs, ses correspondances, ses costumes. Il est aujourd’hui accessible au public À l’origine, au XVII siècle, le château était une abbaye laïque, propriété de la famille de Casamajor, et ce jusqu’à la Révolution française. C’est au début du XIX siècle que la famille Larrouy, s’étant enrichie dans le commerce du jambon de Bayonne, en fait l’acquisition, et y apporte quelques aménagements. Au cours de ce siècle, l’héritière Henriette Larrouy épouse le médecin Paul Reclus. C’est à leur belle-fille, Madeleine Reclus, que le poète Henri de Régnier, ami d’André Gide, dédia un poème en 1918 «J’aime votre maison qui porte un nom d’ étoile, cet Orion qui illumine vos yeux...» Les frères de Paul Reclus furent accueillis à Orion, Élisée Reclus, célèbre anarchiste, et géographe, Armand Reclus, ingénieur et officier de marine qui participa à la construction du Canal de Panama. Jean Labbé, dernier descendant, épousa au début des années 1950, Marguerite Bérard, fille de Léon Bérard, ancien ministre de l’Éducation nationale et académicien. Marguerite Labbé vit toujours au Château. Le château au XXI siècle La propriété s’étend sur une surface de plus de 30 hectares de bois et prairies, face à la chaîne des Pyrénées. En 2003, la famille Premauer, originaire d’Allemagne, en fait l’acquisition. Elle en a entrepris la restauration. Le lieu est exploité en chambres d’hôtes, chaque chambre ayant son authentique décor. D’autre part, et de façon complémentaire, le château d’Orion accueille des manifestations culturelles et des séminaires de réflexion.
