From the vague outlines of its inception, the Romanesque-Gothic castle Zbiroh emerges at the end of the 12th century as the oldest Czech aristocratic residence in Czech. The original part of the castle still dominates the oldest freestanding watchtower on our territory, hidden there is the deepest well in Europe and as a pearl of the castle part is here one of the oldest chapels in the country. Todays form of grandeurs renaissance chateau Zbiroh gains at the very end of the 16th century, in the possession of Emperor Rudolf II. Habsburg. Chateau and its scenic surroundings were in the past popular in the community of many prominent personalities. Dnešní zámek vznikl z původního opevněného hradu, který byl založen na počátku 13. století. Za jeho zakladatele je považován Břetislav ze Zbirohu (Brechizlaus de Zbiroh, 1247) z rodu Sulislavců. Ale již v roce 1230 zpráva připomíná jisté bratry Chřena a Sulislava ze Zbiroha. Později byli mezi vlastníky hradu rod Drslaviců (Děpolt ze Zbiroha), král Přemysl Otakar II., rod Rožmberků, král Zikmund, rod Kolovratů, rod Lobkoviců, nebo císař Rudolf II. V roce 1868 jej zakoupil podnikatel baron Bethel Heinrich Strousberg, který zámek v letech 1869 až 1870 razantně přestavěl podle projektu architekta Augusta Ortha do novorenesanční podoby. V roce 1879 po Strousbergově bankrotu prázdný zámek koupili Colloredo-Mansfeldové. V letech 1943 až 1945 byl zámek sídlem štábu SS. Poté se areál stal majetkem Československého státu a byl využíván armádou. Po roce 1989 zámek získalo město Zbiroh, které jej v roce 2004 prodalo firmě Gastro Žofin.
