The originally a Renaissance chateau, was expanded in the Baroque era, and then adapted in the neo- Gothic style. Of the various architectural styles, the Gothic Renaissance entry gate have survived. The chateau interiors are decorated with stucco and paintings and appointed with period furnishings. Today, the chateau houses the museum. The chateau has housed the museum since 1948. In addition to historical and natural collections, visitors can see a collection pertaining to the military operations of the Austro-Hungarian army in 1909, and also a batiste handkerchief of František Harrach, the adjutant of the heir to the throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, with the archduke’s blood. Zámek Velké Meziříčí vznikl z původního hradu zřejmě z poloviny 13. století. Po přestavbě na renesanční zámek získal svou současnou podobu ve stylu novogotiky koncem 19. století. Zámek je soukromým majetkem, část jeho prostor využívá Muzeum Velké Meziříčí, v letech 1952–1976 zde fungovala i porodnice. Rozsáhlý areál včetně hradeb a parku je na seznamu kulturních památek zapsán od roku 1958.
