Built in 1893, the former city hall of Fort Wayne is a beautiful example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. As a museum and a historic building, the History Center has a unique character of its own for you and your guests to explore.
Facilities for your own “historic occasion.”
The History Center has three rooms available to rent for special events including weddings, wedding receptions, business dinners, fund-raisers, class reunions, retirement and anniversary parties, and cocktail receptions.
The centerpiece of the museum, the Shields Room, is the former Old City Council Chambers and Courtroom. An extensive 2009 architectural renovation has restored its early 20th century Victorian beauty. Oak paneling, rich colors and 24kt gold-leaf stencils highlight the ornate 22-foot tin ceiling and expansive city views. Your guests may ascend the impressive Grand Staircase to the second floor entrance or use the convenient elevator.
The Shields Room has a banquet seating capacity of 160 guests and 200 guests for stand-up receptions or lectures.
Two smaller rooms, the Board Room and Orientation Room, can accommodate 30-50 people, respectively.

The History Center is home to the Allen County-Fort Wayne Historical Society, its museum and collections. When formed in 1921, the society's assets were few, consisting of some historical relics that had been preserved by the Mary Penrose Wayne Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Today it maintains a collection of more than 26,000 artifacts, photographs and documents representing the history of Fort Wayne and Allen County. The largest of these is the very building in which the society has resided since 1980--the 1893 City Hall building designed by Fort Wayne architects John F. Wing and Marshall S. Mahurin. The History Center also oversees the historic Barr Street Market (adjacent to the building), the oldest public space in Fort Wayne, dating back to 1837, and the 1827 home of Miami Chief Jean Baptiste de Richardville, now a National Historic Landmark.
