Alter do Chão Castle is a medieval stronghold classified as a national monument. The monument can be visited in the historic city center. It was built on the order of King Alfonso II in 1216. The fortress was placed on a strategic place for the defense of the area, on a 270 meter high hill.

A well-preserved medieval fortress is one of the region's greatest tourist attractions. The area inhabited since the pre-Romanesque times was occupied by Portuguese forces in the second decade of the thirteenth century. Built on a square plan, the fortress has slate and granite walls, reinforced with six towers, with a 44-meter watchtower.

A visit to the castle of Alter do Chão is an interesting history lesson for anyone who would like to face a steep staircase, climb the main tower and admire the beautiful view of the countryside. Many permanent historical and cultural exhibitions are currently organized among the medieval walls.

O Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Flor da Rosa, também referido como Mosteiro da Ordem do Hospital de Flor da Rosa, localiza-se na freguesia de Flor da Rosa, concelho do Crato, distrito de Portalegre, em Portugal.

Considerado o mais importante exemplo de mosteiro fortificado existente na Península Ibérica, nele está instalada, em nossos dias, uma das unidades das Pousadas de Portugal.

História

Mandado construir em 1356 por D. Álvaro Gonçalves Pereira, primeiro Prior do Crato e pai do Santo Condestável, D. Nuno Álvares Pereira foi, segundo historiadores o local de nascimento deste.

Em 1232 o Rei D. Sancho II doou a povoação do Crato à Ordem dos Hospitalários. Foi em 1340 que a sede da Ordem do Hospital foi alterada de Leça do Bailio ou de Belver, para o Crato, tendo logo o Prior do Crato, D. Álvaro Gonçalves Pereira, decidido fundar uma capela na localidade. Com o crescimento da Ordem é então erguido este Mosteiro, casa-mãe da Ordem em Portugal, fundado em 1356. A partir do século XVI, a Ordem do Hospital passou a denominar-se Ordem de Malta, nome que ainda hoje conserva.

Actualmente, o Mosteiro abriga o túmulo do fundador, uma pousada da Enatur e o Núcleo de Escultura Medieval do Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga.

Características

Este mosteiro é composto por três edificações distintas: a igreja-fortaleza de estilo gótico, um paço-acastelado gótico, já com alterações quinhentistas, e as restantes dependências conventuais já renascentistas e mudéjares. Todo o conjunto tem sido alterado ao longo dos séculos, nomeadamente nos século XVI e XVII e mais tarde no século XX, onde houve uma maior preocupação de preservação do plano original gótico. De facto já no tempo do Rei D. Manuel I o espaço monástico é alargado para um maior número de aposentos, transformando-o num Paço Real, e com o grande terramoto de 1755 e um temporal devastador em 1897 que se fez sofrer na área, o conjunto teria sofrido grandes desgastes.

O Mosteiro da Ordem do Hospital de Flor da Rosa foi classificado como Monumento Nacional em 1910 e, na década de 1940, começaram as obras de restauro. Mais tarde, em 1991 iniciam-se os trabalhos de reconversão para Pousada de Portugal, pelo Arquitecto João Luís Carrilho da Graça, aberta ao público em 1995 e transformando-se este legado patrimonial numa das mais aclamadas Pousadas do País, a Pousada Flor da Rosa.

Em julho de 2009, após um conjunto alargado de acções de investigação, recuperação e valorização realizados neste Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Flor da Rosa, mais concretamente na ala não afecta à pousada, o monumento é aberto ao público visitante com uma área de acolhimento e interpretação onde são disponibilizados diferentes serviços de apoio que permitirão, quer uma melhor compreensão de toda a história deste sítio, quer as condições adequadas de recepção. O que permitiu a instalação do Núcleo de Escultura Medieval do Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga e uma exposição de escultura de João Cutileiro, na nave da igreja.

Castelo de Flor da Rosa

The Castle of Portalegre (Portuguese: Castelo de Portalegre) is a Portuguese medieval castle in the civil parish of Sé e São Lourenço, municipality of Portalegre, district of Portalegre.

It stands out over the older part of the town because of its imposing location over a higher area and because of the contrast between its dark walls and the prevailing whitewashed houses. It served chiefly as a defence of the frontier zone in front of Castile.

History

The earliest historical references date from the reign of Dom Afonso III of Portugal, the king who conceded the first charter to Portalegre in 1259, which gave it the status of vila (town) and made it the capital of a new autonomous municipality.

Starting in 1290, Afonso III's son, the king D. Dinis, reinforced the castle and built the city walls, motivated by the increasing need of defending the frontier and the increased importance of the town.

D. Dinis would attack the fortifications he had ordered to be built in 1299, in the course of a dispute for the ownership of Portalegre between him and his brother Afonso of Portugal, Lord of Portalegre, who also claimed the Portuguese throne.

In the 16th century the city walls and the castle, namely the keep, were reinforced.

In course of the Portuguese Restoration War, the defences of the town were renewed and reinforced again, between 1641 e 1646. They were not effective enough to avoid that the town was occupied in 1704 by French and Spanish troops during the War of the Spanish Succession.

In the Peninsular War there were combats in 1808 against the Napoleonic troops stationed in Portalegre, an event that may have triggered that the French general Louis Henri Loison imposed a heavy tribute to the town.

The castle was listed as a National monument in 1922, but only it was only in the 1960s that any serious restoration works were carried out. In the late 1990s there were more restoration works. In 1999 the Núcleo Museológico do Castelo, a small museum, was founded. It displays weaponry from the 15th century to the World War I.
