Rochlitz Castle or Rochlitz Palace (German: Schloss Rochlitz) lies in the west of the town of Rochlitz in the county of Mittelsachsen in the Free State of Saxony. It was built on the site of an imperial castle, erected in the second half of the 10th century, which fell into the possession of the Wettin margraves in 1143. Its appearance, which includes several Romanesque wings, is considerably influenced by its remodelling into a margravial schloss in the fourth quarter of the 14th century. Further conversions and additions followed at the end of the 15th and in the 16th centuries, when the castle became a secondary residenz, dower house and hunting lodge for the Wettin family. The castle or palace was the residence for members of the Saxon princely house eight times. From the 18th century the castle served as an administrative centre (justice department and district court); in 1852 it became a gaol, which necessitated considerable alteration. The museum founded in 1892 was gradually expanded and, today, takes up almost the entire castle.

Burg Gnandstein or Gnandstein Castle is located in Gnandstein, part of the city of Kohren-Sahlis in the Leipziger Land district of Saxony, Germany. The castle is considered the best preserved fortress in Saxony.

History

The castle was built in the Romanesque style in the 13th century, probably only with a rectangular groundplan and a residential tower. Parts of the present building still date from this early period. The external walls were extended several times.

During the Thirty Years' War the castle was attacked by Swedish troops and partly destroyed. Shortly before the end of the war the south wing burned down after being struck by lightning.

Gnandstein Castle

Kriebstein Castle (German: Burg Kriebstein) is a castle in Kriebstein near the town of Waldheim in the German state of Saxony.

The castle rises above steep crags over the River Zschopau. Within the topographical grouping of hill castles it is classified as a spur castle because it lies on the extreme end of a hill spur surrounded on three sides by the Zschopau that flows around the spur in a large bow.

The rock on which the castle stands is separated from rising ground behind it by a man-made section of ditch, the so-called Halsgraben. Typologically the Kriebstein is a combination of a tower castle (Turmburg) and a ringwork castle (Ringburg) with an oval ground plan. Dominating the whole site is the monumental keep perched atop the highest crag. With its sides measuring 22 x 12 metres, the tower, including its weather vane, reaches a height of 45 metres. Its late medieval oriel turrets and the flèche give the castle a unique and thus unmistakable silhouette. Around the keep are grouped the tower-shaped gatehouse, the curtain wall with its domestic wing, the kitchen and other buildings including the chapel wing. On the east side of the chapel wing is the double-bay, cross-ribbed vaulted Gothic hall and the rear of the castle. This building complex, immediately above the steep slopes over the Zschopau river, has a continuous upper storey dating to the 17th century. The Late Gothic kitchen building is attached directly to the keep at the centre of the castle. The whole is enclosed by a domestic wing, that was used as a great hall (today as a concert and event chamber; weddings also take place at the castle) and contained the well house as well as the northern defensive wall that joined onto the gatehouse.



Kriebstein Castle

Mildenstein Castle, in German Burg Mildenstein, also called Schloss Leisnig, is located in Leisnig in Landkreis Mittelsachsen, Saxony. It is a property of the Free State of Saxony and is administrated by the company State Palaces, Castles and Gardens of Saxony.

The castle is located on a spur above the river Freiberger Mulde, at the northern edge of the town of Leisnig proper and opposite the village of Fischendorf. The rock is a former lava dome and consists of pre-mesozoic rhyolite, in particular the so-called Leisniger Quarzporphyr.

There is archeological evidence for an ancient settlement on the rock spur above Freiberger Mulde.

Mildenstein castle was probably built in the 10th century. However, it was first mentioned only in 1046 when Emperor Heinrich III gifted the Burgwards of Colditz, Rochlitz, and Leisnig to Agnes of Poitou. In 1084 the castle was enfeoffed by Emperor Heinrich IV to Wiprecht of Groitzsch. In 1143 it went by marriage to Franconian earl Rapoto von Abenberg, Stiftsvogt of Bamberg, who sold it in 1148 to Duke Friedrich III of Schwaben who later became known as Emperor Barbarossa. The latter made the castle in 1158 an imperial property, tied to the office of the Emperor and enfeoffed to the Burgraves of Leisnig. As such, it became a governing centre of the Imperial Territory of Pleißenland.

In the early 13th century the castle was the seat of the imperial ministeriales family von Mildenstein who had to give up their properties in the area after they lost a dispute over the entitlement to tithes from former church properties, and Margrave Henry the Illustrious captured the castle in 1232.

The Burgraves of Leisnig founded Buch Abbey in 1192 and acquired the lordship of Mutzschen before 1308. They became one of the most powerful families in the area. Burgrave Otto I of Leisnig, together with his father-in-law, Burgrave Albrecht IV of Altenburg, also gained the lordships of Lauterstein (1323) and Waldheim (1324), and inherited the lordship of Rochsburg from the latter in 1329. However, the joined Ämter Leisnig and Altenburg fell to Margrave Frederick the Serious after Albrecht IV died in 1329.

Mildenstein castle was rebuilt in the late 14th century under Margrave Wilhelm I. It was, however, not used as a residence, but remained the seat of the local government (Amt Leisnig). Castle and town suffered heavy damage during the Thirty Years' War. In 1706/1707 it was chosen as a residence by Stanisław Leszczyński, who had been elected anti-king to Augustus the Strong. Later in the 18th century the castle housed the regional court of law, a prison and apartments for officials.

Beginning in 1798, the local Mirus family had a romantic park constructed around the castle, which is notable for its artificial ruins and a rock tunnel built in 1866. Since 1890 Mildenstein castle has been used as a museum. A small zoo was also established in the park, but closed in 1990.

The chapel dates from the 12th century and was rebuilt around 1400. The Bergfried in the inner courtyard dates from the late 12th century. It is 32 metres (105 ft) high and has a diameter of 14 metres (46 ft). Its lower part is built from locally found quartzite blocks, above a height of 8 metres (26 ft) bricks have been used. Due to increasing dilapidation it was partly dismantled in 1791. Since its restoration in 1875 it has been used as an observation tower. The second Bergfried in the outer ward was built in the 1st half of the 13th century. The gatehouse originates from the late 12th/early 13th century while the granary with its impressive roof structure, the residential building, and the squires' quarters were rebuilt under Margrave Wilhelm I near the end of the 14th century.

From 1957 until 2010 the museum had been home to the Giant Boot of Döbeln, a 2.48 metres (8 ft 2 in) high riding boot which had been manufactured in 1925 on occasion of the 600th anniversary of the shoemaker's guild of Döbeln and is now shown in Döbeln town hall. In 1996, two Leisnig shoemakers presented another, 4.90 metres (16.1 ft) high boot that is exhibited in a building near the castle and is regularly shown on parades.

Permanent exhibitions in the museum are dedicated to Christian art, the life in the castle when it was used as a noble residence, the administrative tasks of the early modern period, and the history of the prison system. Topics of special exhibitions vary from year to year.

The castle also offers guided tours, concerts, reenactment events, and themed events for children and families.

Mildenstein Castle

Skat dates back to around the year 1813, when the former Lord of the Castle Hans Carl Leopold von der Gabelentz invited his friends and academics to join him for a friendly and cheerful gathering, during which the card game was invented.

The existence of a moated castle in the current location of what is now known as Poschwitz Castle was first mentioned in 1264. The Lord of the Castle at the time was Otto von Poschwitz. The castle became the property of the von der Gabelentz family in as early as 1388. It unfortunately burned right down to its foundation walls in 1507. Nearly 75 years then passed before Frederick von der Gabelentz, one of Albrecht von der Gabelentz' great-grandsons, commissioned the construction of today's Renaissance-style castle on the manor in Poschwitz. Over the years, the castle saw many generations of the noble line come and go. The manor grew to an impressive size of over 172 hectares until its final owner, Hanns Conon von der Gabelentz, had his property expropriated, despite having commissioned the creation of a museum of local history in parts of the estate prior to the expropriation. After the war, the valuable philological library created by Hans Conon von der Gabelentz ( 1807; † 1874) and his collection of playing cards were lost to the Soviet Union as 'looted art'.

During the era of the German Democratic Republic, the castle was used as the headquarters of the publicly owned enterprise 'VEB Gartenbetrieb Poschwitz', a horticultural company. After reaching a state of disrepair, many parts of the manor were gradually pulled down. The first feature to be destroyed was the neo-Gothic tower top, followed by stables and the gateway leading into the courtyard.

After the fall of the inner German border, a private investor purchased the castle, which had since been classified as a listed building, but nevertheless let it fall into disrepair. The City of Altenburg has been fighting for the preservation of the property with the Department for the Protection of Historic Monuments ever since and most recently carried out emergency work to secure the roof of the castle in 2013.

Schloss Poschwitz

1776 Das heute als Schloss Rabenstein bezeichnete Herrenhaus wurde vom Chemnitzer Kaufmann Johann Georg Siegert im Stil eines Barockschlösschen erbaut. Es blieb bis 1883 im Besitz der Familie. Danach gab es mehrmalige Besitzerwechsel:

1902 Der Chemnitzer Fabrikant Matthee Paul Herfurth erwarb die Burg und das Schloss. Durch umfangreiche Umbauten kamen der Wintergarten und repräsentative Elemente des dekorativen Jugendstils dazu. 1923 Das gesamte Ensemble wurde unter Denkmalschutz gestellt.

1946 Die Sowjetische Kommandatur besetzte das Schloss. Ein Jahr darauf wurde es zu Volkseigentum erklärt.

1951 Das Schloss wurde zum Altersheim umgebaut.

1982 Der VEB „Kombinat Textima“ erwarb das Schloss und nutzte es als Repräsentationsobjekt und Gästehaus.

2000 Die Lebenshilfe Sachsen e. V. erwarb das Schloss und eröffnete es als Bildungsstätte und Gästehaus.

2009 Mit dem Erwerb des Schlosses durch das städtische Unternehmen „Fortbildungszentrum Chemnitz gGmbH“ erfolgte bis ins Jahr

2011 die Sanierung und Modernisierung des Hauses.

2012 Das Hotel und Restaurant eröffnete am 21. Januar - somit bleibt das gesamte Areal für die Öffentlichkeit zugänglich.

Saxony’s Smallest Castle

Rabenstein Castle is located in the Rabenstein district of Chemnitz and forms part of the Schloßbergmuseum. It was built in the second half of the 12th century during the settlement of the foothills of the Erzgebirge mountains. The frequently used nickname »Saxony’s smallest castle« is somewhat misleading in that the buildings still standing today make up only the heart of a formerly much larger complex.

Visit the castle and its surroundings to discover traces of an eventful history spanning the centuries since the Middle Ages: The small knights’ hall located at the upper level of the palace and adorned with frescoes featuring hunting motifs attests to the castle’s redesign in the first half of the 17th century, the early Baroque period. One example of the Rococo period well worth seeing is the Rabensteiner Schloss palace above Rabenstein Castle; it has since been turned into a hotel. Chemnitz textile merchant Johann Georg Siegert acquired the castle and the property appertaining to it in 1774 and had Rabensteiner Schloss built as a new manor house. Siegert and his successor, notably Maximilian von Welck, were also responsible for reshaping the castle and its surroundings into a Romantic English-style park.

The City of Chemnitz acquired the complex with the incorporation of the village of Rabenstein in 1950. A museum was created in the castle in 1959, following extensive restoration work. In the 1980s and 1990s, the castle complex was subject to further comprehensive restoration measures. Along with a host of other attractions in the local area (including the Rabenstein water reservoir, the Wildgatter game reserve, and the Felsendome show-mine and restaurant), Rabenstein Castle is one of the most popular destinations for excursions in Chemnitz today.

Rabenstein Castle (Saxony)

Geschichte

Erstmals urkundlich erwähnt wird der Ort 1181 als sorbischer Ort. Das Rittergut wird erstmals im Jahre 1329 erwähnt, damals höchstwahrscheinlich eine Wasserburg. Das heutige Gebäude wurde 1543 errichtet und beherbergt heute sowohl Gemeinde- als auch Verbandsverwaltung. Trebens Kirche in unmittelbarer Nähe des Herrenhauses wurde bereits in der zweiten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts erbaut und enthält eine Kreutzbach-Orgel aus dem Jahr 1862.

Treben gehörte zum wettinischen Amt Altenburg, welches ab dem 16. Jahrhundert aufgrund mehrerer Teilungen im Lauf seines Bestehens unter der Hoheit folgender Ernestinischer Herzogtümer stand: Herzogtum Sachsen (1554 bis 1572), Herzogtum Sachsen-Weimar (1572 bis 1603), Herzogtum Sachsen-Altenburg (1603 bis 1672), Herzogtum Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg (1672 bis 1826). Bei der Neuordnung der Ernestinischen Herzogtümer im Jahr 1826 kam der Ort wiederum zum Herzogtum Sachsen-Altenburg. Nach der Verwaltungsreform im Herzogtum gehörte er bezüglich der Verwaltung zum Ostkreis (bis 1900) bzw. zum Landratsamt Altenburg (ab 1900). Treben gehörte ab 1918 zum Freistaat Sachsen-Altenburg, der 1920 im Land Thüringen aufging. 1922 kam der Ort zum Landkreis Altenburg.

Aufgrund des Braunkohlebergbaus im Süden Leipzigs entstand 1854 in Plottendorf eine Tonwarenfabrik, 1821 begann der Abbau eines 10 Meter mächtigen Braunkohleflözes in Serbitz. Es existieren in der Gemeinde vier Gedenkstellen, die an die Gefallenen des Ersten Weltkrieges in Treben, Serbitz, Plottendorf und Lehma erinnern.

Im Ortsteil Plottendorf wurden 1942 in einem Lager 33 Zwangsarbeiter untergebracht, die im Schwelwerk Regis arbeiten mussten.

Bei der zweiten Kreisreform in der DDR wurden 1952 die bestehenden Länder aufgelöst und die Landkreise neu zugeschnitten. Somit kam Treben mit dem verkleinerten Kreis Altenburg an den Bezirk Leipzig. Der Trebener Nachbarort Thräna wurde durch die Reform von diesem getrennt und dem Kreis Borna zugeteilt, wodurch seine historische Verbindung zum Altenburger Land und zu Thüringen endete. Kirchlich blieb Thräna jedoch mit der Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirche in Thüringen und seiner Pfarrkirche in Treben verbunden. Heute gehört Treben zum Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirchspiel Altenburg-Rasephas – Altenburg-Zschernitzsch – Treben der Evangelischen Kirche in Mitteldeutschland.

Mit der Neugründung des Freistaats Thüringen gehört Treben seit 1990 wieder zu diesem. Lag der Ort seit 1990 im Landkreis Altenburg, kam er mit der Kreisreform im Jahr 1994 zum Landkreis Altenburger Land.
