The Akkerman Fortress is one of the largest and mightiest constructions of XII-XV centuries that has survived on the territory of Ukraine. Built on the high rocky bank of the Dniester firth, the fortress was designed to protect its inhabitants from the continuous attacks of numerous enemies. The exact date of foundation of this stronghold is unknown, but in general the construction took over two centuries. That is why the " authors’ right" for the fortress is the subject of ongoing debate: some believe the Akkerman giant to be Moldovan, others think it is Turkish, yet some are certain that the citadel is of Genoese origin. But no matter who the father founders of the medieval fortress are, they did their job in a big way and thoroughly constructed the fort. See for yourself: surrounded on three sides by a deep moat cut into the rock, the fortress is a mesh circuit with an area of more than 9 hectares. The length of the fortifications is about 2,5 km, the height of towers ranges from 5 to 15 meters, while the thickness of the walls runs up to 5 meters. Ancient architects bonded fragile shell deposit with a special mortar, turning the walls into a solid monolith, and the fortress – into a truly secure stronghold. Only once in history, a continuous siege from the land and the sea (by efforts of a 350 thousand strong army and 100 warships!) forced the defenders to surrender it to the enemy.
Nowadays, the Akkerman Fortress has been declared as a cultural heritage site. The once menacing two-leaved Main (Chilia) Gate is hospitably open to all visitors. And there are a lot of those wishing to touch living history there in the Akkerman Fortress. In addition to an exciting excursion and a visit to the archaeological museum, you can shoot with an arbalest, personally “examine” every inch of the ancient military equipment exposed in the Garrison Court, wander along the underground labyrinths, take a look at the waters of the Dniester firth from the height of one of the 34 donjons, and just have a good time. This site also hosts numerous historical reconstruction festivals. Here, taking part in the sword joust and assaulting the secure fortress walls, you can make your childhood dream of becoming a medieval knight come true.
Having repulsed numerous assaults, having endured numerous destructions and reconstructions, the Akkerman Fortress has survived through the centuries, and preserved its outstanding power and grandeur. You can judge the mastery of medieval architects personally –a trip to the fortress will not take much time (just one and a half hour’s drive from Odessa), while the impressions from visiting this unique defence complex will remain forever.
