Description

At a distance of 20 km from Victoria, from DN1 to Fagaras, turn left in Voila commune, towards Agnita, this medieval jewel is right next to the road.

The best preserved Saxon fortified church in the Fagaras area is the one in Cincsor (Kleinschenk). Disadvantaged by the lack of a hill, the fortified church occupies the center of the former Saxon village. The current church belongs to the early Gothic, and the stone ornaments are considered the work of the Gothic handicraft workshop in the Charter. Construction began after 1250, following the devastation caused by the Mongol invasion a few years earlier. The bell tower was part of the church structure from the beginning. In the middle of the 15th century and in the following century, fortifications, a wall and four defense towers were built. The village being destroyed by Mihai Viteazul's mercenaries, in 1599, determined in 1637 the Saxon community to build a second defense wall inside the existing one.

Next to the fortified church there is a museum with Saxon objects, in the former Saxon school, and the parish house, excellently preserved, hosts cultural events.

The church is permanently open to the public.

The settlement from the XIV century was formed in the vicinity of a Roman castle.

Its Gothic style church was built in 1421, to the place of a XIII century church. Its double wall, with stones form a Roman castrum, was raised in the XV century.

There are four towers along the walls. For defense a floor was also made above the loft, supported by wooden frame. In time of distress the fortress was a safe refuge, but the tower was also used for storing bacon, and cereals were stored in baskets hanging on the walls.

One of the towers bears the mark of a sundial, the other tower is ornated with geometrical forms.
