Built by Constantin Brâncoveanu in 1698, the palace is situated on what was once a major road connecting Bucharest with Târgoviște and Craiova. One of the earliest examples of the Brâncovenesc style architectural style that arose under the eponymous prince’s rule, the palace blends Byzantine, Ottoman and Venetian elements into a decidedly Wallachian style. The ruler intended for the palace to be passed on to his son, but the family was executed by the Ottomans in 1714, and the palace fell into ruin. Thanks to a committed restoration process, the palace has been revived in its original glory. Visitors can enjoy a stroll through the palace’s grounds, enclosed on three sides by a fortified wall, while admiring the unique details of the palace’s facade. Inside, a museum exhibits a range of historic artefacts, from jewelry to coaches and weapons, all surrounded by the detailed decor of the Romanian Renaissance.
