The Alba Carolina Citadel is a star-shaped fortress located in Alba Iulia. Its construction commenced on November 4, 1715 during the Habsburg rule in Transylvania, and was completed in 1738. 20,000 serfs were involved in its construction, which is estimated to have cost around 3 million guldens. The citadel was built on the site of two other fortifications: the legionary fortress of Legio XIII Gemina (known as Apulum), as well as the medieval Belgrad citadel.
The shape of the citadel, an iconic element of Vauban architecture, influenced the design of Alba Iulia's city logo when the city adopted city branding in 2014. The city received 47.5 million lei in 2009 for the restoration and conservation of the citadel.
The citadel is named after Charles VI, known as Carol VI in Romanian, who was the Holy Roman Emperor at the time of the citadel's construction.

Today, the Alba Carolina Fortress became one of the main attractions of the Alba Iulia county, by providing a unique historical and medieval ambiance. It is very accessible from Cluj-Napoca, and you can explore it through different tours and day trips. An important feature that attracts thousands of tourists each year is the Guard Change of the Citadel. The guards are dressed in uniforms specific to the XVIII century, and they welcome the tourists at the gates of the Citadel. This ceremony began in 2009, and throughout the years it became a symbol of the Alba Carolina Citadel. The Guard Change Ceremony takes place daily during the touristic season (May - September) at 12:00, and sometimes twice a day during weekends. For a unique memory, tourists can take photos with the guards, who are dressed according to their category: infantry, cavalry, artillery, or commanders.

Castrul roman Apulum a fost unul dintre cele mai importante centre ale stăpânirii romane de pe teritoriul Daciei.(apoi) El a fost construit în anul 106, pe malurile Mureșului, la o distanță de cca 20 km de cetatea dacică Apoulon. Construirea castrului a fost determinată de cantonarea în această zonă a Legiunii a XIII-a Gemina (106-271), dislocată din Vindobona, actualul oraș Viena. Legiunea avea rolul de a păzi ținutul aurifer și drumul de transport al aurului către Roma.
Dimensiunile castrului erau 400 x 400 metri, în timp ce clădirile adiacente castrului, așa-numitele canabae legionis, se extindeau pe o suprafață de aproximativ 500 x 700 de metri pătrați.
Castrul roman Apulum a fost reședinta guvernatorului Daciei Superior și apoi a Daciei Apulensis.
În imediata vecinătate a castrului s-au dezvoltat așezările romane Colonia Aurelia Apulensis, iar mai apoi Colonia Nova Apulensis.
Descoperiri
În anul 2011, în lunile martie - aprilie, s-au descoperit importante artefacte romane din perioada castrului.
În apropierea porții a IV-a Cetății „Alba Carolina” arheologii au descoperit un basorelief din marmură, cu dimensiuni aproximative 50 cm x 30 cm, ce înfățișează probabil centurion purtând lorica musculata și mantie pe umeri; mâna dreaptă ținând o suliță iar mâna stângă sprijnind un scut oval. Personajul are barbă, ceea ce ar indica un posibil personaj din a doua jumătate a secolului al II-lea, spre dinastia Severilor. Armele reprezentate indică un soldat din trupele ecvestre ori din trupele auxiliare. Basorelieful este încadrat de un chenar roșu având la bază un text din care s-a putut citi „SECUNDA RUDIS”. Textul latin se traduce ca „a doua sabie de lemn”. Aceasta era un simbol de promovare în carieră pentru gladiatori la rang de ofițer în armata romană și totodată un simbol al libertății la gladiatori. Conform inscripției se atestă faptul că acest personaj este un instructor de gladiatori sau un personaj care a putut fi promovat în legiune, după ce a fost eliberat din statutul de gladiator și care a fost adus ca instructor pentru trupele staționate în castru.
În apropierea Bisericii Romano-Catolice s-a descoperit un altar votiv închinat zeiței Nemesis, zeița romană a răzbunării, cu dimensiuni de 1 m x 60 cm. Acestă descoperire i-a făcut pe cercetători să emită ipoteza existenței unui edificiu sacru în cadrul castrului.
S-a descoperit Pretorium-ul castrului, drumului roman „Via Principalis”, precum și fundațiile barăcilor soldaților.
Situația actuală
Materiale din vechiul castru roman s-au folosit la ridicarea cetății medievale din care s-au păstrat 3 fortificații.
În prezent, castrul, parțial reconstruit, este inclus în „Traseul celor trei fortificații”, un obiectiv turistic ce le oferă vizitatorilor orașului Alba Iulia posibilitatea de a călători în timp de-a lungul a două milenii de istorie, printre vestigiile a trei fortificații, din trei epoci diferite, construite succesiv pe aceeași locație, fiecare nouă cetate incluzând-o pe cea veche: Castrul Roman Apulum (106 d.Ch.), Cetatea Medievală Bălgrad (sec. XVI-XVII) și Cetatea Alba Carolina, fortificație de tip Vauban (sec.XVIII).

Apulum

Martinuzzi Castle, also known as Alvinc Castle, is a medieval castle in Vințu de Jos, in the Transylvania region of Romania. The fortress was one of the earliest and most influential works of the Italian Renaissance style in Transylvania. Its ruins are classed as a national heritage site, identified as AB-II-m-B-00394 in Romania's National Register of Historic Monuments.

Notable events
In the night of 16–17 December 1551 George Martinuzzi was assassinated within the castle walls by General Giovanni Battista Castaldo.
On 9 May 1595 Aaron the Tyrant was imprisoned and later poisoned here.
In 1601 the Italian architects Simone and Fulvio Genga were accused of political intrigue and assassinated in the castle's dungeons by General Basta.
In 1680, Metropolitan Sava Brancović was imprisoned by Michael I Apafi in the castle's dungeons.
Between 1658 and 1661 the fortress was damaged by Ottoman and Tatar attacks.
In 1715 the castle was owned by Transylvania's Roman Catholic Church, functioning as episcopal summer residence. In 1792, while occupied by Ignác Batthyány, the property caught fire and was later repaired.
During Romania's communist rule, the castle continued to deteriorate, having been used as industrial storage, granary and as a meat processing plant. Northern parts of the structure collapsed in 1981.
After the Romanian Revolution, the castle was abandoned and the ruins are facing imminent collapse.
Mythology
Oral tradition suggests that Castaldo assassinated Martinuzzi in an attempt to recover a stash of ancient coins, which the cardinal was rumoured to have acquired from local fisherman and hidden in the castle.

Biserica reformată din Cricău este una din cele mai vechi biserici construite de sașii transilvăneni, edificiu reprezentativ pentru stilul romanic din Transilvania. Lăcașul de cult, inițial romano-catolic, a servit de-a lungul timpului drept biserică evanghelică-luterană și reformată-calvină a comunității din Cricău.
În anul 2012 mai trăiau în Cricău doar patru maghiari și niciun german.

Istoric
Monumentul medieval datează din secolul al XIII-lea. În secolul al XVI-lea biserica a fost prevăzută cu un sistem de apărare, format dintr-un zid de piatră și un donjon, rezultat din transformarea turnului bisericii. Zidul ce înconjoară biserica, ridicat din bolovani legați cu mortar, are o formă ovală, cu o lungime de 64 m și lată de 55 m. Zidurile au o grosime între 1,10-1,25 m, fiind susținute de contraforturi interioare dispuse la 20 m unul de celălalt.
Săpăturile arheologice din perioada 1964-1966, au scos la iveală o fundație pătrată a unui turn de poartă pe latura de est. Acest turn, ridicat din piatră brută, are 2 m grosime și laturi de 6,9 m. Cel de al doilea turn amplasat în partea de nord a fortificației, este plasat exterior, pentru a apăra zona cea mai expusă unui atac, din acesta păstrându-se doar partea inferioară. Cel de al treilea turn de apărare a fost adăugat pe latura de sud a zidului, la începutul secolului al XVI-lea. Acest turn semicircular are raza de 3,5 m și ziduri groase de 2 m.
Pentru a rezista mai bine unui atac și biserica propriu-zisă a suferit transformări. Turnul bisericii a devenit donjon, iar nava centrală a bisericii a fost înălțată până la nivelul etajului al treilea. Astfel au fost zidite portalul situat în vestul fortificației, ferestrele laterale și rozeta gotică de la primul etaj, în locul acesteia din urmă fiind amenajat un meterez alungit. Nu se știe însă cu exactitate dacă ultimul etaj al bisericii a fost ridicat în această etapă a transformării bisericii sau în 1573, dată ce apare scrisă pe zidul bisericii.
Elementele care pot da indicii asupra perioadei în care a fost ridicată fortificația bisericii din Cricău sunt cele două portaluri gotice, care o situează în perioada sfârșitului secolului XV și începutul secolului XVI. Istoricii plasează biserica fortificată de la Cricău în ansamblul fortificațiilor medievale reprezentative din Transilvania.

Obreja is a late Romanian serf-village, which was from the beginning in the hands of the noble family Esterházy. Sometime in the second half of the 19th century it became the property of the Wesselényi family, being owned by br. Wesselényi (V) Miklós (1845-1916). After the nationalization a special school functioned in the castle, and then an orphanage. In 2003, the Greek-Catholic Church has reclaimed the building, so today it houses the sisterhood. The new owners placed a tasteless metal roof on top of the building.

Wesselényi Castle in Obreja

The Câlnic Fortress is a fortress located in Câlnic, Alba County, in the Transylvania region of Romania. It was built by a nobleman whose family later sold it to the local ethnic German Transylvanian Saxon community at a time when the area belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary. When still used for defensive purposes, the double walls encompassed a residential keep, storerooms and a Roman Catholic chapel that became Lutheran following the Reformation. Together with the surrounding village, the fortress forms part of the villages with fortified churches in Transylvania UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Description
Background and construction
The Mongol invasion of 1241 prompted a surge in military construction in Transylvania, with wood and earthen defenses abandoned in favor of stone, assembled in haste and without much initial attention to artistic detail. At Câlnic, the fortress began as a residence for a Graf (count), one of the last such to be built in Transylvania. Around 1270, the nobleman Chyl of Kelling, whose family gave the village its German name, built a keep for his residence. The strong parallelepiped structure, with a ground floor and three floors for living space, came to be known as the Siegfried tower. Frequent Ottoman attacks led the keep to be fortified with a defensive level and surrounded by a massive wall. The oval precinct around the keep was fitted with a guard tower to the south and a gate tower to the north. The structure was surrounded by a water-filled moat, with access only by drawbridge. The noble owners never went along very well with the local notables, and in 1430, the final Graf sold the fortress to the villagers and moved out.
Once the Saxon community took ownership, they extended it by building a second fortification wall and a tower in the southern part, using the structure for refuge during Ottoman raids. Within were built storerooms and living quarters for withstanding sieges; these have not survived. After the second wall was finished in the 16th century, two levels were added to the keep (which reached over 20 m in height) so that defenders could fire guns outside the precinct walls.
At the end of the 15th century, a small hall church-type chapel with an apse was built for the fort on the site of an earlier, ruined sacral building. The chapel interior features fresco fragments from the beginning of the 16th century. Its western side has a wooden platform decorated with panels painted in 1733 in a floral, folk-Renaissance style. In the mid-16th century, the moat was filled and the drawbridge replaced by a gatehouse fitted with a portcullis. The Ottomans destroyed the village in 1658, but failed to take the fortress.
Surroundings and recognition
Restoration work was done between 1961 and 1964. Since 1995, the site has been administered by a foundation of Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca. The tower hosts a museum detailing the local Saxons' lifestyle and traditions, while the chapel hosts lectures. Nearby, there is a former Lutheran parish house built in the 16th century and enlarged in 1779.
Further out, there is a church on a hill towering over the village, surrounded by a cemetery. Villagers built the church in the 15th century, although it was much altered in the 19th century and now has a Gothic Revival style. Its two tabernacles and the sacristy portal are original carved Gothic items, while two Baroque pulpits are from the second part of the 18th century.
In 1999, Câlnic, together with five other places, was added to the already-listed Biertan to form the villages with fortified churches in Transylvania UNESCO World Heritage Site. Additionally, the fortress is listed as a historic monument by Romania's Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs, the following considered separate monuments: the keep, the chapel, the inner wall, the outer wall, the church and the parish house.
