Built in the 17th century, and classified as a property of public interest, the Barra de Aveiro Fort in Ílhavo, which enjoys a privileged location, will be granted 50 years use for tourist purposes under the Revive programme. The Government launched the public tender at the end of January and is receiving proposals until May 4, 2020.
The landmark fort complex, which as a traditional lighthouse and two sea piers that guard the river mouth, will will be concessioned to private individuals for a period of 50 years, with the aim that the building will be used for tourism purposes (such as a hotel establishment of about 50 rooms, local accommodation or another tourism project), with a minimum annual rent of 6,444 euros. It is the 21st property which has been launched and tendered under the Revive programme, aimed at the recovery and regeneration of unused historical heritage in Portugal.
This impressive building was built in the 17th century, during the post-Restoration period. In the 19th century however, the fortress lost its defensive and strategic importance, and was decommissioned from military use. For many years, it was still used as a landmark to guide the entry of boats into the port of Aveiro but this was no longer necessary when the Barra Lighthouse was built.
Classified as a property of public interest, the Barra de Aveiro Fort has a privileged location, over the mouth of the Vouga River, in the middle of the Port of Aveiro, on the island of Mó de Baixo, and occupies an area of 3,709m2.
