The remains of the castle were Torun after several centuries extracted from the ground in 1961. The ruins are located between the Old and New Town and are permanently protected.
The first assumption defenses were built here in 1233 as a wood-natural fortress of the Teutonic Knights. Already before the place was settled by people. After a few years, even in the first half of the thirteenth century the first element of brick, which was a fragment of a stone perimeter wall. The castle was the seat of the commander and the convent. The first known Komtur Otto mentioned 1250 years.
Work on strengthening progressed very quickly. Probably in 1255 years, the construction of the tower and the entire perimeter of the walls, as demonstrated record of Bishop Henry Sambia. Around 1270 years latrynową tower was built, which is the only part of the castle survived until today. Construction was completed at the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth century, the elevation of said octagonal tower, which was not included in the precinct walls. From this period dates the construction of the south wing houses later decorated with cloisters.
You probably already existed then ward from the north or north-east, it connects with the outdoor section of the wall outside the walls of the castle proper. At the end of the fourteenth century, in the years 1384-1392 the castle was expanded and new buildings rising along the rounded the northern wall. The whole castle was surrounded by an outer ring of walls which greatly expanded its already small area and allowed the erection of new farm buildings in the area interwalls.
In the years 1437-1440 the castle was Komtur Konrad von Erlichshausen, who later became grand master of the Order and moved to Malbork. The last Komtur who is holding office in the castle Toruń was Albrecht Kalb in the years 1446-1454.
At the beginning of the war Thirteen February 8, 1454, the castle was besieged burghers of Toruń and the army of the Prussian Union and quickly acquire it. As a symbol of the oppression of the Teutonic castle was burnt down and demolished, survived only gdanisko. On the site of the castle by the centuries gradually established embankment, which completely covers the existing remnants of walls. On an embankment in the nineteenth century was established gardens.
It was only in the period between the idea of unveiling residues, but the work was interrupted by the Second World War. To the idea returned in 1961 and the work carried out until 1965 discovered the Teutonic fortress walls.
