The first wood-gas castle was probably built here in the middle of the thirteenth century by the bishops Kuyavian. Place the construction was chosen very well - it is a promontory encircled slope in the Vistula valley towering high above the surrounding country. Castle at the second siege by the Teutonic Knights in 1330, he was captured.

It is unknown when a castle was built, probably took place shortly after the destruction of the castle by the Teutonic Knights, because bishops wanted to hold near Wloclawek his residence. Certainly castle erected bishop of Gołańcz Maciej, who died in 1364. Initially, it was only one building with three floors and sizes 12x25 meters. For 1383 years it was enlarged to the size of 17x25 meters by Bishop Zbylut of Gołańcz, successor Matthias. Then the peripheral walls formed along the edge of the slope. During the next expansions at the southern section of the walls built outbuildings, in the south-western corner of Bishop John Karnkowski built a four-sided tower.

Castle in the period preceding the great war with the Teutonic Order was used several times to negotiate with the Grand Masters. She was here Jadwiga and Wladyslaw Jagiello ongoing discussions with the Teutonic Knights for the return lands bobrzymskiej and Dobrzyńska.

In the years 1582-1600, Jerome Rozdrażewski extended the castle and transformed the interior, so that was formed late Renaissance fortified residence. During this reconstruction was built at a dry moat, at some distance to the west of the castle walls, four-sided gate tower.

After the destruction of the second half of the seventeenth century, the castle was abandoned, and the remains of outbuildings demolished. In the early eighteenth century Felicjan K. Szaniawski wooden building erected outside the castle, and in 1720 years Bishop Christopher Anthony Szembek advantage destroyed the walls of the main building to raise the baroque palace, which was hired architect John B. Cocchiego.

After the partition of Polish castle was to be demolished by the Prussian authorities in 1804. The buildings have been ruined by the demolition of the building material.

The first study was conducted in the years 1978-1985 here, after which the castle was protected as a permanent ruin.
