Olsztyn received city rights in 1353 years, but seven years ago on the banks of the Warmia chapter Lyna lofty castle as his most important and strongest fortress. According to the inventories of the sixteenth century in the northern wing of the Administrator of the living, there was a also a refectory, in the south wing of the apartment were other officials, on the first floor of this wing housed the chapel of St.. Anna in the basement kitchen, pantry, bakery and brewery. Within the castle was also an armory, gunpowder, steam, prison, laundry, stables and coach house.
He was one of the strongest fortresses in Warmia. Multiple attacks in the fifteenth and sixteenth century castle accelerated adaptation to firearms.
The end of the sixteenth century began long renovation works. In the mid-seventeenth century, the castle took Elector of Brandenburg during the Polish-Swedish War. Beginning in 1685 the castle has remained the seat only burgrave. In the years 1756-1758 was created by the eastern wall of defense Baroque palace that has absorbed gate.
After 1772 years the castle was established Municipality estates State Audit Office. Part of the north wing has been used in the years 1779-1877 by the Evangelical community. In the nineteenth century the castle was twice the fire place. First in 1821 and then in 1827 - then partially destroyed the north wing, which, however, quickly rebuilt. The nineteenth century was marked by renovations: in the years 1837-1839 were restored east wing and the chapel in the south, in 1865, renovated south wing, and 1871 years were repaired northern wing. During the nineteenth century the Prussian authorities demolished the fortifications.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the castle housed the apartment of President regency and regional museum. Since 1945, the castle is the headquarters of the Museum of Warmia and Mazury. Now you can watch exhibitions of artistic and historical collections, visit the chapel and watchtower.
