Malbork Castle in its present form was erected for almost two centuries. Was founded at the same time with a defensive city as one body unbreakable defense. Construction began in 1275 years and its first stage lasted until the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. It was created when binomial team castle - the castle proper and ward. Proper castle was scheduled rectangular with sides of 50 to 60 meters. It consisted of three wings, and from the east was closed curtain wall.

From the beginning, the castle was erected as a new headquarters for the convention, which previously housed in Zantyrze. Moving took place after the erection of the north wing of the castle proper about 1280 years. At the same time, the wing was erected adjoining the tower extended beyond the wall in the corner of the north-east.

In the opposite corner of the castle was founded gdanisko included inside the walls of the external and connected with the castle porch. In the castle were dormitories, refectories, chapter house and a chapel. Along the outer wall ran porch fire.

In 1309 the Grand Master of the Order decided to move the state capital to Malbork. This involved the necessity of extension of the castle to the needs of the master and offices. The previous ward was rebuilt and renamed the Middle Castle, the proper castle now called High. Initially, the great master lived in the castle High, while the average began to rebuild the castle on his future residence. Three sides of the courtyard of the Middle Castle encased in the new wing. From the High Castle moat still separated him, by the eastern wall was built the church of St.. Bartholomew and guest rooms on the north - apartment buildings commander and a gate. On the west side stood the Great Refectory, flat great master and a chapel and outbuildings. Home Grand Master was only established in the late fourteenth century, probably in the years 1383-1393. This new element was marked out among the other buildings of architectural form, did not have as stringent as they bare walls with simple window openings, but he was decorated with columns, buttresses and battlements crowning. On the top floor found a place Refectory Winter and Summer, which stately rooms.

In the High Castle was rebuilt in the fourteenth century Grand Chapterhouse. In the years 1331-1334 was added to the chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The new ward was created to extend the existing foundation to the north. These are surrounded by a wall with towers and gates from the east. In this form of Malbork Castle surpassed the surface of the entire city.

In 1410 the castle was besieged by the army of Ladislaus Jagiello, but quickly abandoned the further struggle for the fortress. After the war, the Teutonic Knights fortified the castle fortifications of earth from the north and east. Precinct masonry fortifications now only partially adapted to firearms. In the middle of the fifteenth century in the fortifications built of brick enough that loopholes. This did not prevent, however, take the castle by the army of King Casimir Jagiellon in 1457.

The castle now cared Polish kings treating it as one of his residences. High Castle received the Jesuits, ward still housed craft workshops and outbuildings. In the first half of the seventeenth century arose mainly from the east fortifications - bastions of the perimeter embankments and walls bastion.

After the partition of Polish Malbork became a part of Prussia. The authorities have allocated it to the barracks for the army and weaving workshops. It has also started to undress some walls for obtaining raw material. A plan was complete liquidation of the buildings, but the protests of German society luckily not committed to this in 1803 halting demolition.

Initial work began hedging lead in the first half of the nineteenth century and led them Karl Friedrich Schinkel, then Ferdinand Quast. However, they did it without a wider knowledge of the earlier architecture of the castle, damaging the work of many items. Only Konrad Steinbrecht went to study very diligently and in the forty years since 1882 led by him in the reconstruction of the greater part of the former appearance of the castle. He directed the restoration of the appearance of a medieval castle baroque eliminating subsequent processing.

Restoration work continued after the Bernard Schmid, but in 1944 he was forced to leave Malbork. Hostilities greatly damaged the castle ponadpółwieczne undermining the efforts of these two architects.

In 1959, fire destroyed the remaining part of the roof sheathing. Rebuilt, however, the former capital of the Teutonic Order, and today it provides plenty of attractions. It houses a museum, are shown to present in the "Light and Sound".
