Lipowiec castle perched on a high rocky ridge of Garb Tenczyński westernmost of the Cracow Upland. The first fortifications built here probably long before the castle. The castle was then rebuilt as a wooden castle on the initiative of Konrad Mazowiecki. In 1443 years the castle ceased to act as residential bishops of Krakow. Zbigniew Olesnicki after buying the Principality Siewierskie moved the seat of the bishops of the castle in Siewierzu. In Lipowiec created a prison for priests, but still stayed here permanently one of the bishops, priests and military crew.
The next expansion was made in the fifteenth century, the whole took the current shape - a small courtyard surrounded by residential buildings below and the surrounding peripheral walled bailey. The tower was extended with three floors, and in this form has been preserved to this day unchanged. The upper two floors placed her adapted to firearms loopholes from which you can control the access to the entrance of the castle. This entry was placed more than 10 meters above the courtyard ward. Further modernization work has not breached greater fifteenth-century castle.
Castle by the end of the eighteenth century served as a prison. And it's very good in prison, because there was only one case of a successful escape. Stankar Francis, author of the conduct of the Reformation in Poland was for his work embedded in Lipowiec. Around 1550 years coincided with the cell in which, according to legend, helped him in love with the daughter of a prison officer. When provided by the strings leave it out.
In 1655 the castle was taken by the Swedes, who used it to house the governor of Krakow, General Paul Wirtz. After two years of retreating Swedes burned buildings. Reconstruction took up in 1732 the bishop of Constantine Szaniawski, in 1754 he graduated from the Bishop Andrzej Zaluski. Castle no longer matters having military again began to serve as a prison, but this time not as rigorous. Home improvement and retreats organized a special seminar for clergy imprisoned here.

Now, after years of restoration work from 1961-1968 as a permanent ruin Lipowiec is made available to the public.
