The church and monastery in Czerwinsk nad Wisla (on the Vistula) are among the oldest buildings in Mazovia region. The abbey of the Canons Regular brought from France was founded here by Piotr Dunin in the 12th century. The monastery existed here by 1155 and the Romanesque basilica was probably built in the time of Bishop Aleksander of Plock in the mid-12th century.

Basilica today is a two-tower church on the escarpment with a nave and two aisles. In spite of later Gothic and modern alterations, the main body of the building largely retains its original Romanesque appearance. The Chapel of the Crucifixion contains extremely valuable 13th century murals, the largest and best preserved Romanesque murals in Poland. The Gothic frescoes that covered them can be also seen in the chapel. In the high altar is the miraculous picture of Madonna with Child from 1612. The monastery has been run by the Salesian Fathers since 1923. The monastery exhibition features ethnographical specimens from the territories of Salesian missions and a room in memory of Cardinal August Hlond. In 1410, the massed armies of Malopolska, Lithuania and Ruthenia gathered around the Gothic bell tower on their march to war against the Teutonic Knights.
