The ruins of the castle in the village Bochotnica located near the village Bochotnica in the Lublin province on the right bank of the Vistula River. The castle was built in the mid XIV century by Firleyz family, it is considered that 1368 is the year of its foundation. Later, the castle was extended by order of King Casimir the Great, who wanted to strengthen and protect the area.
The research shows that fortificated castle was built in two stages. First, defensive stone towers were built, but in the end of the XV century three-storey building and a new gate with the drawbridge were built on the south-western side. The fragment of stored wall is dated from the beginning of XVI century. The stone defensive walls were further protected by a moat 50 meters wide.
There is a romantic legend that no longer young Casimir the Great fell in love with a Jewish girl Esther. King settled Esther in the castle to be near his beloved, and, allegedly, a secret tunnel for romantic visits was dug from Kazimierz Dolny to the castle. Currently, the underground passage has not been found. So far nobody knows when the castle was abandoned.
In 1890 a draft of complete reconstruction of the castle in Bochotnica was made, but the idea had never been implemented. In 1964 archaeological research was conducted under the supervision of a specialist in Wroclaw in the territory of former defensive castle.
