Description

Bezhhlovskyy Castle - a village in Poland, located in 14 km southwest of Torun, where 430 inhabitants live. The village is known by its eponymous castle - one of the oldest defensive structures of the Teutonic Order.

The Gothic castle was built in the years 1270-1305 on a former stronghold, destroyed by the Lithuanians in 1263. Bezhhlovskiy castle is located on a hill on the banks of the Vistula River. The brick castle was built in the shape of an irregular quadrangle. Entrance was through a high central gate. From the east, south and west castle was surrounded by a moat, and on the north side it was protected by local farm buildings. The fortress is surrounded by a stone wall, and the defensive corner tower, located on the northern and western sides, executes the main protective functions. On the north wall of the castle there is preserved the portal with ceramic depicting a rider on horseback, accompanied by two knights. The unique work dating from the year 1300 and is considered the most valuable piece of ceramic art of medieval Europe that was preserved.

Over the years the castle was rebuilt several times: in 1475 and in 1840. In the mid-nineteenth castle became the property of the city, after which he was again rebuilt in neogothic style.

After World War II there was an open city nursing home. In the early 90's the Diocese of Torun became an owner Bezhhlovskoho castle, which is currently engaged in restoration of unique historical monument.
