Description

The Engelenburg Castle had been a private residence for over almost 5 centuries. In 1988 it was extensively refurbished and converted, by Antonius de Lange, from an abandoned private residence into one of the Netherland’s most exquisite hotel, restaurant, golf course and conference center. The hotel pays tribute to its rich and long history. As though a number of rooms have being named so to commemorate their notable occupants. Today, we warmly welcome you to experience every single corner of the heritage of our estate, truly one of the most unique hotels in Arnhem, Netherlands.

1570

The first owner of the Engelenburg Castle was Jacob I Schimmelpenninck van der Oye. Ever since wine had been of major importance in the castle, as they exported German wines to the Baltic States. In 1591 Crown Prince Maurits stayed at the Engelenburg Castle during the battle of the IJssel, which signifies the importance of the house and its family. The Earl Hendrik van den Bergh destroyed the Engelenburg Castle in 1624 during the battle of the Veluwe. The Earl was a commander in the Spanish army but the owners of the Engelenburg supported the Family van Oranje-Nassau.

1641

The Engelenburg Castle was destroyed by the Spanish during the 80-year war (1568-1648) and it was rebuilt by Jacob II Schimmelpenninck van der Oye. He got married to Margaretha van der Capellen and they rebuilt the Engelenburg Castle in 1641. The Engelenburg Castle was a model for The Loo Palace in Apeldoorn in 1684.

1781

The Van der Capellen family bought the Engelenburg Castle in the 18th Century. The homestead became a meeting place for the Patriots and many ideas about the establishment of the republic came from Brummen. However Monarchy survived and Van der Capellen fled to France.

1828

In 1828 the widow Judith van Lennep restored the castle and rebuilt it to a convenient Manor house with hand-carved fireplaces, high ceilings and sumptuous rooms. With the restoration Judith van Lennep had given to the Engelenburg Castle the most extensive changes in history.

1910

The Engelenburg was rebuilt into a summer residence when the Earl van Citters bought it. He was appointed Governor of the Province Gelderland by HM the Queen and in order to make the homestead suitable for offices, he extended it to serve official functions as well. After his death in 1942 the Engelenburg was sold for fl. 150.000.

1945

In April 1945 shortly before the end of the World War II, a group of Dutch SS, Kommando Zeppelin led by Andries Pieters, occupied the castle. The group remained only eight days. However, prior to their flee by the Canadian troops they brutally tortured dozens of prisoners. Every year on April 13th, we commemorate the eight resistance fighters of Brummen who were executed by the Kommando Zeppelin. After the German occupation, the house became a resort for the employees of the Twentsche Bank (later ABN Bank). In the 70's and 80's the Engelenburg Castle stood empty for more than 10 years.
