Both medieval castles are enthroned high above Taufers im Münstertal. Although they have been unoccupied for a long time and fallen into decay the mysterious ruins of Reichenberg and Rotund still attract adventurers and curious people.
Due to its location on a precipitous hill on about 1,500 meters above sea level Rotund ranks among the highest castles throughout Tyrol. It was built in 900 at the bidding of the bishops of Chur and it probably bears its name because of the prominent round donjon. In the 15th century Rotund Castle was renovated and extended. Today it is in possession of the municipality of Taufers im Münstertal, but there is no real owner.

Reichenberg Castle was the residence of the same bishops and is located on a steep slope, too, but something deeper than Rotund. After repeatedly changing lords and reeves the building has been no longer inhabited since the end of the 17th century. That’s why many parts of the fortification are decaying, only the mighty keep is preserved.

Just as the whole Vinschgau also the environs of Taufers im Münstertal is an ideal terrain for hikers and mountain bikers. Maybe you make a detour to the castle ruins of Rotund and Reichenberg during one or the other tour, in order to admire them at least from the outside.

The Castello del Principe in the resort town of Belvedere Marittimo is one of the most beautiful and well preserved castles of the Italian region of Calabria. It was built in the second half of the 11th century by order of the Norman ruler Roger. Probably originally its dimensions were somewhat smaller than present, and the building itself was built on the site of pre-existing Byzantine settlement. Subsequently, the Princely castle was converted into an aristocratic residence of the lords of Belvedere Marittimo. Then it got its present name, Castello del Principe (the Prince).

For centuries the castle was owned by a variety of noble and influential family. In 1269, the year he moved from Charles I of Anjou to Giovanni di Oporto, was then the property of Baron Simone di Belvidere, and in 1287-89 the years, the castle was restored by the feudal Lord, Ruggero di Sangineto. The Sangineto family owned Castello del Principe until 1376, the year, and then again began the half-century "regime change".

When, in 1426, the year the Kingdom of Naples was captured by the Aragonese, many fiefs were confiscated. Among them was a Princely castle. By order of Ferdinando of Aragon, Castello del Principe with castles, Altomonte and Corigliano were fortified (at the same time the castle was built in Pizzo). In 1490, the year the castle was built a drawbridge, and it was built around a wall with two cylindrical towers with battlements. Today above the main entrance to the castle you can see the Aragonese coat of arms, with two cupids. In 1494, the year the owners of Castello del Principe is a family of Sanseverino, which owned it until 1595, the year, and then the owner of the castle was the family of the Carafa.

Royal castle Belvedere Marittimo is a square building with two towers, facing South. These towers and wall surrounding the castle, is a typical defensive elements of the Aragonese era. From the South and West sides are visible remains of the defensive ditch and a small hole in which attached chains of the drawbridge. Today Castello del Principe is a national monument, and its plaster model can be seen in the Park "Italy in miniature" in Rimini.



The Castello del Principe

The ruins of Lichtenberg Castle are perched high above the town of Montechiaro/Lichtenberg near Prato/Prad at the Passo dello Stelvio/ Stilfserjoch Pass. The castle has a rich history of Minnesang, a courtly tradition of lyric and song that was popular in the Middle Ages.

The Count of Tyrol held the enlarged castle up until 1513; the Counts of Khuen-Belasi subsequently took it over, and still own it today. The castle’s tradition of minstrelsy is still visible in the fragments and traces of once-sumptuous fresco decoration leftover from the heyday of the courts. Most of the fresco cycle was removed in 1912, and was transferred to the Ferdinandeum Museum in Innsbruck.

Castle ruin of Montechiaro

Above the town of Sluderno, on an exposed Valley, is the vast compound of Castel Coira. Prince-Bishop of Coira Heinrich von Montftfort  commissioned it in 1250. In 1297 the castle became of property of the Mazia (Matsch) family with whom the Prince-Bishop had an ongoing feud. In 1504 what had became a vastly expanded castle was attained by the Trapp family to whom it still belongs today. The most antique part of the compound counts the dungeon, the palace and the circular walls. The castle was bit by bit converted into a magnificent renaissance palace. Today countless amounts of visitors admire the precious vivid coloured frescos, the wood lined rooms with majolica heaters and the library. All around there are dungeons, towers and gates. Castel Coira owns the biggest arsenal in the world: more than 50 perfectly kept armours, swords and other weapons. Since 2006, in Castel Coira, you can see real-life reproductions of old South-Tyrolean jousting tournaments.

Il castello di Silandro (in tedesco Schloss Schlandersburg o semplicemente Schlandersburg) è un castello rinascimentale che sorge ai margini della cittadina di Silandro in Alto Adige.

Cenni storici
Il castello fu costruito intorno al 1600 dalla famiglia aristocratica Hendl. Si compone di un due porticati con le camere circostanti. Il castello fu progettato dalla famiglia in stile rinascimentale.

Dal 1988 il castello è di proprietà della Provincia Autonoma di Bolzano, che nel 1993 ha ne ha disposto un moderno ampliamento per ospitare la biblioteca comunale di Silandro. Il lavoro è stato diretto dall'architetto Werner Tscholl. Attualmente ospita anche l'ufficio per il lavoro, l'ispettorato forestale e agricolo, l'ufficio per l'orientamento professionale e altri ancora.
