Built as a country estate in the 14th century, the residence was a focus for the surrounding area, with legal business and community meetings held in the courtyard. Built as a fortified country mansion with escarpment wall, upper residential storey, lowered second floor, inner court well and small chapel, the complex remained the property of the descendants of the Malatesta family until the end of the 19th century when it became the property of the Marcosanti family.

Il castello Due Torri (detto anche castello Scorticata (Castrum Scortigate) di Torriana è una costruzione fortificata in provincia di Rimini, facente parte del complesso di fortificazioni appartenute alla famiglia Malatesta.

L'antico castello si suppone costruito attorno all'anno 1000 e il suo sistema di fortificazioni si estendeva su entrambe le cime con circa mille metri di mura, e mutò il suo nome due volte nell'ultimo millennio, dapprima "castello di Torriana" nel 1938 e poi l'attuale nome "castello Due Torri" attorno agli anni sessanta.

Le prime notizie certe sul castello appartengono al 1141, anno in cui papa Lucio II lo donò alla alla chiesa Riminese. Nel 1186 passò ai Malatesta di Verucchio.

Poco si sa sulla sua struttura se non quello appreso da una descrizione del cardinale Anglico che nel 1371 raccontava come il castello fosse costituito da 35 stanze.

Il castello rimase sotto la signoria dei Malatesta fino al 1462, anno in cui il Duca di Urbino Federico lo espugnò nuovamente in nome della Chiesa e dopo una breve parentesi di dominio veneziano agli inizi del XVI secolo, papa Leone X nel 1519 infeudò il castello, che aveva perso ogni importanza militare, ai Pio da Carpi.

Il castello passò poi attorno al 1608 al Comune di Rimini. Per lungo tempo le pendici del suo monte vennero erose da cavatori e marmisti.

Si ipotizza possa essere il luogo in cui i figli di Paolo Malatesta (la cui tresca con Francesca da Polenta fu citata nella Divina Commedia da Dante) si vendicarono dello zio Gianciotto Malatesta, marito di Francesca, reo appunto di aver ucciso la moglie e il suo amante, nonché fratello di Gianciotto stesso. Alla morte di Gianciotto il suo patrimonio passò ai figli e, in particolare al figlio Pandolfo, toccarono appunto i territori e i castelli di Fano, Mondolfo e, appunto, della Scorticata.

Castello Due Torri

Montebello di Torriana è una frazione del comune di Poggio Torriana, in provincia di Rimini, famosa per un castello che, secondo una leggenda, sarebbe abitato da un fantasma di nome Azzurrina.

Montebello è molto interessante anche da un punto di vista storico, le sue origini risalirebbero all'epoca preromana, sembra che i primi abitatori di questo sito fossero popolazioni celtiche e ai piedi della rupe, sembra esistesse un loro luogo di culto.
Storia
La prima costruzione in muratura è di epoca romana (III secolo), una torre a pianta quadrata (ora inserita nella struttura del castello). L'insediamento altomedievale successivo portò in eredità il nome latino Mons belli (Monte della guerra).

Le prime notizie del castello si hanno grazie ad un documento notarile datato 24 settembre 1186, allorché il castello venne venduto da Ugolinuccio di Maltalone a Giovanni Malatesta.

I Malatesta dotarono il castello di fortificazioni, trovandosi al confine con il territorio dei Montefeltro, nemici storici della famiglia riminese. Nel 1393 i Montefeltro, con un audace colpo di mano, riuscirono ad espugnare la fortezza. Nel 1438 Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta riuscì a riconquistarla. Ma la fortuna militare del Malatesta declinò fino a quando, nel 1462, venne sconfitto a Pian della Marotta, presso Senigallia, per mano dell'esercito pontificio inviato da Papa Pio II (Piccolomini) e guidato da Federico da Montefeltro. In seguito alla sconfitta, Montebello fu infeudata nel 1464, dai conti Guidi di Bagno.

Da allora la famiglia dei conti Guidi è tuttora proprietaria della Rocca. Dopo il Cinquecento la fortezza subì degli interventi per adattarla a dimora nobiliare. Rispetto alla struttura del 1464, i Guidi hanno ristrutturato un'intera ala del castello ad ala nobile.

Tra il 1968 e il 1973, il castello ha subito un grande intervento di restauro per ripristinare la rocca dagli ingenti danni dei bombardamenti della Seconda guerra mondiale ed è poi diventato un museo a partire dal 1989. Dallo stesso 1989 è aperto ai visitatori ed è inserito tra i monumenti di patrimonio nazionale italiano per il suo alto valore storico.

Nel castello si tramanda tutt'oggi la storia di Guendalina Malatesta, meglio conosciuta come Azzurrina.

Montebello Castle (Torriana)

Castel Sismondo is a castle in Rimini, Romagna, northern Italy.[1]

History
The castle was built by Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, lord of Rimini, beginning on March 20, 1437, but only the central nucleus of this structure remains. According to the contemporary chronicles, Malatesta designed it, although it is known that several architects worked on the construction, including Filippo Brunelleschi, who visited Rimini for two months in 1438. Construction lasted some 15 years.

The castle-palace originally was surrounded by a large moat, with a ravelin at the main entrance, sporting the heraldic symbols of the House of Malatesta. The walls were thought to be thick enough to bear the impact of the new artillery pieces of that period. Although originally positioned externally from the city, it has no towers facing that side: all towers are in fact oriented towards the city. These towers are square, and once housed a bronze cannon each.

The central part of the castle was also the Malatesta residence, with rooms decorated with tapestries, curtains and frescoes. Also the exterior was decorated, as suggested by the few maiolica tiles visible. Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta died here in 1468.

In 1821 the castle was turned into barracks for the local Carabinieri. Five years later, the external walls were demolished and the moat filled. After a period of decline, the edifice is now used for cultural exhibitions.

Castel Sismondo


The Fortress of San Leo is a castle on the border of the Romagna and Marche; the castle is best known as the site where Count Cagliostro died. It was one of the palaces owned by Federico da Montefeltro and his wife Battista Sforza and was a fortified, palatial retreat. It is now a museum.
History
The first fortification on the top of the mountain was built by the Romans. In the Middle Ages it was bitterly fought over by the Byzantines, Goths, Franks and Lombards. Between 961 and 963 Berengar II, the last king of the Lombard Kingdom of Italy, was besieged by Otto I of Saxony. Around the middle of the eleventh century the Counts of Montecopiolo came to Montefeltro, the ancient name of San Leo, from which they took the name and title. In the second half of the 14th century the Malatesta were able to capture the fortress, but until the middle of the 15th century, the castle was often retaken by the Montefeltro. In 1441 the young Federico da Montefeltro scaled the walls of the fort. Faced with the new military dangers, he had the fortress rebuilt, entrusting the task to the Sienese engineer Francesco di Giorgio Martini.

The new structure allowed for a dynamic counter-offensive, providing for cross-fire. The fortress sides were equipped with artillery and the access points were rendered unreachable by enemy fire thanks to military outposts.

In 1502, Cesare Borgia, with the support of Pope Alexander VI, took possession of the fortress. At the death of the pope, in 1503, Guidobaldo da Montefeltro took possession of his dominions. In 1516 the Florentine troops, supported this time by Pope Leo X and guided by Antonio Ricasoli, penetrated the city and commandeered the fort.

From 1527 until the devolution to the Papal State from the Duchy of Urbino in 1631, San Leo belonged to the Della Rovere. With the new ownership, the fortress was used as a prison. Among the inmates were Felice Orsini and Freemason Alessandro Cagliostro . In 1906 the fortress ceased to be a prison and for eight years, until 1914, it hosted a "compagnia di disciplina".

In the period of Italia Unita, the municipality of San Leo belonged to the province of Marche (Province of Pesaro and Urbino), until 15 August 2009 when it was separated together with six other municipalities of the Valmarecchia, following the outcome of a referendum held on 17 and 18 December 2006.

Currently the castle houses a museum and an art gallery in arms.

Description
In the fortress there are two distinct parts: the keep, with its square turrets and the gothic entrance is the older part and residential wing; and the more recent round towers and massive corbeled wall that connects them. The two towers, the wall, and the keep surround the so-called Place d'Armes.

The area is dotted with rocky peaks that rise steeply from the sea cliffs. On each of these peaks, the ruins of a castle or fort recall a tumultuous past. To the visitor who walks up the Romagna plain, the City-Fortress appears as a huge shield of high smooth rock. It appears like a ship with the bow to the East, the bell tower like a mast, and the handful of houses scattered around.

Forte di San Leo

The Rocca Malatestiana (Malatestian Stronghold) is a fortress in Cesena, Italy. The current structure is the third fortress built in the place, near the ruins of the two previous ones, of late-Roman and medieval age.

The fortress, one of the imposing in Romagna, has a court and two central towers, called the "Male" and the "Female". The Museum of Agriculture, located inside the latter, offers visitors a complete picture of rural life in Romagna over different ages, while the "Male Tower" hosts a permanent exhibition of Malatestian Ceramics.
