History Castel Nehaus, also known as Castel Casanova, has a very lively history. Erected between 1241 and 1248 in the territory that Kunigunde, wife of Emperor Henry II, had donated to the Diocese of Bamberg, it was from this last date in fief to the Lords of Tures (Taufers). Beginning in 1504, a succession of property passages begins, during which the manor house will be owned by the Neuhaus families from Bressanone, Teutenhofen, Kunkl and Soll Von Aichberg. To date, the imposing square-shaped keep, a portion of perimeter walls and a tract of an artificial moat that served as a defensive outpost remain from the original core of the complex. During the nineteenth century the entire structure was subjected to heavy rearrangements to make it look more romantic according to the fashion of the time, but despite this the main elements were not erased. Throughout its long life, Neuhaus Castle has housed within its walls illustrious personalities: the poet Oswald von Wolkenstein, who lived here for a few years, the Bacher family of artists who for almost a century had his artistic laboratory here and finally, during the second world war, the famous American poet Ezra Pound found refuge in the castle with his family. Castel Neuhaus is during the summer season an important meeting point for numerous international artists and home to various theatrical and musical events. Castel Neuhaus o Casanova o ancora Maultasch (in ted.: Burg Neuhaus o Burg Maultasch) è un castello medievale costruito su uno sperone roccioso, sopra l'abitato di Terlano. Cenni storici Il castello è in rovina, ma ben visibile è ancora la torre principale di quattro piani, a pianta quadra il cui ultimo piano costituiva la parte abitata. Fu costruito dai Tirolo, ma non è chiaro l'anno. Di certo, viene citato per la prima volta nel 1206, quando risultava punto d'appoggio per la chiusa eretta come dogana nei pressi di Terlano (e di cui oggi non rimane più traccia) detta mala tasca. Nel 1270 il castello fu distrutto nell'ambito delle lotte fra Mainardo II di Tirolo-Gorizia e il vescovo di Trento nel 1275. Nell 1320 Cristiano di Sarentino lo ricostruì, ampliandolo: da qui la denominazione di "nova domus", da cui il nome tedesco Neuhaus (e la traduzione introdotta in epoca fascista di "Casanova"). La torre ancora oggi visibile risale probabilmente a quest'epoca. Deve l'altro suo nome al fatto che nel XIV secolo, nel maniero soggiornò più volte Margherita di Tirolo-Gorizia, detta Maultasch, che a sua volta deve il proprio soprannome con tutta probabilità all'antica dogana mala tasca (traducibile in "trappola per topi") che si trovava sotto il castello. Durante il suo soggiorno la duchessa condusse uno stile di vite molto sfarzoso, tanto che una leggenda narra che giocasse solo con birilli d'oro. Nel 1382 il castello fu acquistato dai signori di Niederthor, che lo ristrutturarono secondo il loro gusto e con piccole aggiunte strutturali. In seguito però si spostarono, prendendo dimora presso il castel Verruca (Fragsburg) di Merano. Nel 1572 il castello fu acquistato dai Payrsberg, che lo ricostruirono perché resistesse alle nuove armi d'assedio, ma già nel 1700 era di nuovo in rovina. Oggi il castello rimane allo stato di rudere, privo di alcun tetto. È raggiungibile da Terlano in circa 20 minuti.
