The Swabian Castle, better known as "Castelluccio" stands on a chalk hill and overlooking the coast to protect the city of Gela. The origins of the castle date back, according to ancient historical documents, in 1143 when Count Simon of Butera donated it to the abbot of the Monastery of St. Nicholas Arena in Catania. The Castle was built using limestone yellow and large white limestone blocks that give the whole structure looks really nice and impressive, is also devoid of decorations and lace, more features that enhance its functionality. Located in the district Spadaro is easily accessible along the road that leads to Catania and Gela is located about 10 km from the city. As regards the architectural aspect it may be noted that the plant is rectangular with thick walls and two massive towers on either side: the tower to the west still has the remains of a cistern and a room still partly visible in the tower to east, however, you can admire a chapel carved into the wall.
