The Castle of Sarmato is located in the Valle del Tidone and it is presumable its history had already begun in the year 1216 when this manners, together with those of Castel San Giovanni and Borgonovo, served to protect the city of Piacenza from the numerous raids coming from the area of the Pavia area.

At first it was owned by the Pallastrelli accounts, but they saw it as half destroyed in 1270 in the battle against the Landi family of Bardi. In the following centuries the castle passed several times by hand to several owners and became the object of intricate military political events until 1819 when it came into possession of the counts Zanardi Landi, who are still its owners.

The complex, entirely built in brick, is surrounded by walls that once were surrounded by a moat. They enclose a small village divided by two perpendicular streets, with the castle, three churches, houses and the rocchetta. Inside there are large halls, partly with vaulted ceilings and partly coffered, sitting rooms, bedrooms with semi-double beds, the former hall of arms, the rooms of the archive with the parchments of the Venetian Republic, the large 17th century dance hall and the "Sala dei filosofi" study with the vault of the 15th century frescoed by Bonifacio Bembo, all furnished with period furniture. Outside then you can visit the court of carriages and the charming Italian garden.

Castel San Giovanni (Piacentino: Castél San Giuàn) is a town and comune in the province of Piacenza, Emilia-Romagna, Italy.
History
The origins of the town are probably related to an ancient pieve called Olubra and a fortress called Castellus Milonus, which preceded the construction of a new castle by Alberto Scoto in 1290 (now also disappeared).

After a period under the Dal Verme family of lords-condottieri, it became part of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza in 1485.

Castel San Giovanni

l castello di Calendasco, Castrum Calendaschi, è una fortificazione situata nel paese di Calendasco in provincia di Piacenza.

L'edificio, costruito interamente in mattoni, è sostanzialmente integro ed in buono stato di conservazione, sebbene bisognoso di alcuni lavori di restauro, mostra tutta la sua imponenza di maniero difensivo.

La parte più antica del maniero è sorta per volontà del Vescovo conte di Piacenza, di cui il territorio di Calendasco era feudo, come indicano le tracce architettoniche, intorno all'anno 1000, mentre la prima citazione è in un documento di papa Urbano II risalente al 1187 in cui veniva confermata i diritti di proprietà dei monaci di San Salvatore di Quartizzola su Calendasco.

Il castello con il recetto formava, assieme alla chiesa e all'hospitale dei pellegrini, il burgi Calendaschi. 
Struttura

Il castello è costituito da una struttura trapezoidale, interamente costruito in laterizio e caratterizzato dalla presenza di merlature guelfe. La struttura è circondata da un fossato ed è accessibile tramite 3 ingressi, due di essi presentano gli incastri del ponte levatoi, poi, sostituiti da ponti in cotto.

Una torre di forma cilindrica sovrasta l'entrata principale del maniero che conduce ad un cortile interno caratterizzato da un doppio loggiato.

All'interno sono presenti due grandi sale con camino, cioè la caminata magna superiore e quella detta caminata magna inferiore: tutte e due sono definite magne, cioè grandissime in alcuni documenti medievali.

Affiancato al castello, di un secolo più antico, c'è il recetto, sempre ad entrata levatoia con annessa la propria pusterla, con ancora ben visibile il suo battifredo in muratura; anche questa costruzione aveva una propria piccola torretta, posta sul lato nord-ovest, oggi completamente diroccata. Sulla stessa piazza sita dinanzi al recetto ed al castello è l'imponente costruzione, difensiva anch'essa, che conteneva le scuderie.
Il primo nucleo del castello, il recetto, risale ai primi anni dell'XI secolo, mentre il castello vero e proprio viene edificato a partire dal secolo successivo.

Tra le mura del castrum burgi calendaschi nasce nel 1290 il nobile San Corrado Confalonieri, la cui famiglia era feudataria bonis et juribus della zona di Calendasco.

Alla fine del XIII secolo il castello risulta essere di proprietà delle famiglie Palastrelli e Scotti.

Nel 1346 venne distrutto dai ghibellini fuoriusciti da Piacenza, viene poi ricostruito negli anni immediatamente successivi dai guelfi per la sua importante posizione nell'ambito della resistenza contro i Visconti.

Nel 1412 viene, poi, affidato da Filippo Maria Visconti a Bartolomeo e Filippo Arcelli, diventando, così, un avamposto in appoggio al castello di Somaglia, situato sulla sponda opposta del fiume Po. Negli anni successivi il castello passerà alla famiglia Confalonieri, prima di tornare in possesso dei Visconti e, poi, di nuovo, dei Confalonieri.

Il 14 gennaio 1482: dopo vari giorni di assedio, le truppe di Ludovico il Moro, signore di Milano, strappano il castello di Calendasco al capitano Antonio Confalonieri rifugiatosi al suo interno insieme al genero Ottaviano Sanseverino. 
Tornato sotto il controllo della famiglia Confalonieri a seguito del declino della famiglia Arcelli, nel 1572, il castello è teatro dell'assassinio del conte Ludovico Confalonieri ad opera di Antonello De Rossi, amante della contessa Camilla, moglie di Ludovico. Metà del feudo passa, così, alla famiglia Sanseverino, imparentata con i Confalonieri che conservano i diritti sulla rimanente metà. Nel 1584 i Sanseverino, tramite la camera ducale, vendono la loro parte del feudo al conte Gian Battista Zanardi Landi. L'altra metà del feudo passa, invece, sotto la gestione del conte Benzoni.

L'ultimo feudatario di Calendasco è il conte Fabio Perletti, sposo della c.ssa Paola Anguissola d’Altoe’, giureconsulto e ambasciatore farnesiano alla corte imperiale. Il feudo di Calendasco gli viene concesso il 14 aprile 1690 da Ranuccio II Farnese, riconoscente per avere il Perletti, con esito positivo, negoziato presso la corte imperiale e presso i Doria di Genova l’annessione al Ducato di Parma e Piacenza dei feudi di Bardi e Compiano, oltre che per aver condotto con successo le trattative per le nozze di Odoardo II Farnese (primogenito del duca e di Isabella d’Este) con Dorotea Sofia di Neoburgo, madre di Elisabetta, poi regina di Spagna con Filippo V. I Perletti, ed alcuni membri della famiglia Anguissola con cui questi si imparentarono, vissero a Calendasco fino a fine '800.

Nel 1719 la famiglia Zanardi Landi cede la sua parte del castello per ottenere risorse finanziare da utilizzare per ripianare la difficile situazione finanziaria generata da Bartolomeo Zanardi Landi.

Nel 1913 il giurista Giuseppe Scopesi della Capanna, proprietario del castello, lo dona ad un ente di carità che lo cede, in seguito, al comune di Calendasco.

Castello di Calendasco

On the Fornello tower stands from centuries a weatherwave flag of wrought iron with astrl symbol: three eight-pointed stars and an ellipsoidal planet in the middle. The history of this flag is unknown. It’s a perhaps a trace of the old owners, the Sanseverino ancient family, Princes of Naples, alchemist and scholars of the stars. We like to interpret it misssing out the most mysterious part, giving to the star a particular sense.

The star wants to indicate the cardinal points of taste: the north and south, east and west. The four basic tastes of a wine perceived by the tast buds: bitter, sour, sweet and salty, and the various nuances that make it even more complex and interesting tasting. This flag so special and full of symbolism, today has become our logo and corporate brand.

Legend tells that the tower is haunted by the ghost of a young noblewoman, burned at the stake with changes of witchcraft, that is still occasionally walking throught the ancient rooms of the palace.

Torre Fornello

The oldest part of the Castle, originally a fortress erected on high ground, is the great Tower, from which it was possible to control a long stretch of the Po River (Cuneulus super Padum). It is believed to have been built by King Luitprand around 740 C.E., when Pavia was the capital of the Lombards. Its purpose was to serve as a fortress and a stronghold for the defence of the Po and the “Via di Monte Bardone”, which subsequently came to be known as the Via Francigena-Romea, connecting Northern Europe with Rome. 
In 910 C.E., King Berengar I gave the Rocca, or fortress, to the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Saint Cristina, located just a few kilometres away, of which it became an integral part. 
In 990, Sigeric, the Archbishop of Canterbury, travelling along the Via Francigena on his way back from Rome to Canterbury, designated the Abbey of Saint Cristina, with its Castle, as the 40th stopover (station) along that route. 
Just outside the fortress to the north rises a tiny fortified hamlet, part of the castle complex and completely rebuilt in 1600. It consists of a complex of buildings whose entrance is protected by a moat, two watchtowers, and four defensive towers set outside the walls on the hamlet's far sides. 
In 1251, the Abbot of the Abbey of Saint Cristina appointed a feudatory Lord to take stewardship of the Castle and the extensive lands associated with it. It did not take long after that for the Castle to become, beginning in the 13th century, one of the most important Lombard fiefdoms. It was ruled over by the Pusterla family until 1340, when they became involved in a conspiracy against the Visconti family and were ruthlessly exterminated.

The Castle of Chignolo Po

Situated on a hill at about 300 metersabove sea level, along the route from Agazzano to Pianello Val Tidone, in a splendid panoramic position about 30 kilometers from Piacenza, the Castle is mentioned the first time in 1412 when it was enfeoffed to the Arcelli by Visconti

Its strategic position was ideal for the control of the routes running from the Po river to the Apennines.

Built in origin as a military fortress, it underwent numerous modifications and was transformed  to a residence for noble families and became a cultural centre full of precious works of art.

The history of this castle is marked by the numerous passages in property often determined by murders, fraud, or extinction of noble families for lack of heirs. Today the castle is privately owned,  partially abandoned and in need of refurbishment.

The brick castle is quadrangular and has five towers. Inside a monumental staircase leads to the upper floors –  A portico on the ground level and a 17th Century loggia at the upper level . Worthy of mention the grand halls on the first floor with coffer ceiling and decorative frescos: the music room, the dining-room, and a series of lavishly decorated rooms plus a beautiful garden overlooking the valley towards Piacenza.

Lastly, the small chapel dedicated to Saint Joseph with the relics of Saint Felice Martyr.

The Castle of Boffalora 


The Castle of Agazzano is a fortification located in the heart of Val Luretta, where the last hills leave space to the plain; the structure is located right on the edge of the village of Agazzano and is the cornerstone of the most important village of the valley, an ancient property of the Scotti family that still today hold the domino.

Il Castello di San Colombano si trova a San Colombano al Lambro in provincia di Milano.
Le origini
Pare che le origini del castello di San. Colombano si possano far risalire al VI secolo, contemporaneamente al grande monastero di Bobbio[1]. Comunque sia, è fuori dubbio che il castello esistesse nel X secolo, sia a garanzia della vicina capitale di Pavia e residenza reale di Corte Olona, sia per la necessità di quei tempi di lotte feudali, sia per le invasioni ungariche, ed il conseguente decreto del Re Berengario, per la difesa e fortificazione di tutte le città, borghi, luoghi, cascinali, monasteri, ecc.; sia, infine, per l'espressa affermazione del testamento di Ariberto del 1034, dove si parla di castris, edificiis, ecc., in Gaifaniana, Sancto Columbano, Miradolo, ecc., e più sotto di edifici esistenti tam in ipsis castris quam et foris (tanto dentro quanto fuori di essi castelli). Allo stesso modo è certo che esso appartenesse dall'800 circa al 1000 al contado (Comitatus) di Lodi, come appare anche dai documenti del 1034 e 1299[1].

Barbarossa
Trascurando la preesistente fortificazione, si può sicuramente affermare che l'attuale impianto, sia pure considerato come solo tracciato, sia opera di Federico Barbarossa. Questi, durante la sua seconda calata in Italia, distrusse il castello di San Colombano (come del resto la maggior parte di quelli esistenti in Lombardia); ma nel 1164, riconosciuta l'importanza che il luogo ricopriva nel territorio per la sua particolare conformazione morfologica e per la posizione intermedia nella direttiva viaria Milano-Piacenza, decise di riedificarlo, per utilità del suo impero e vi aggiunse, per utile personale, una grande borgata denominata "Magnum suburbium" , munita di mura merlate, terraggio e fossa esterna. Si devono pure al Barbarossa le grandiose dimensioni del castello, la perfetta regolarità simmetrica e l'ampiezza delle strade del borgo (situazione anomala nelle tipologie in uso a quei tempi); la costruzione, nel ricetto ad ovest, del "Magnum palacium" o "Grande Palazzo" (di cui sono ancora visibili le fondazioni), adibito a residenza imperiale; la costruzione, nel ricetto ad oriente, del Palazzo dei Vicarj e Rettori della terra di San Colombano, ossia l'autorità comunale politica ed ecclesiastica del borgo. Si suppone che a dirigere i lavori di ricostruzione del "castrum" sia stato Tito Muzio Gatta, architetto cremonese al seguito del Barbarossa, che qualche anno prima aveva delineato le mura della nuova Lodi. Non si hanno precise notizie circa i tipi di fortificazione e loro distribuzione in questo primo impianto, ma si intuisce comunque che quest'ultimo fosse convenientemente attrezzato di strutture complementari. Agli inizi del dominio visconteo avvennero operazioni trasformative miranti a limitare l'importanza militare del Castello. Comunque, visto l'utilizzo che la signoria viscontea attribuiva alla rocca (prigione di Stato), dove nel 1338 fu imprigionato Lodrisio Visconti, dobbiamo considerare che anche il Castello fosse comunque in condizioni di sicurezza. La signoria viscontea contribuì, su tutto il territorio interessato dal suo dominio, ad una notevole fioritura castellana.

L'impronta della nuova architettura fortificata ebbe ovviamente maggiore intensità nei nuovi impianti, pur non trascurando la trasformazione di fortificazioni esistenti: in tale caso rientrò San Colombano, interessato da molteplici modifiche, talmente radicali da far considerare questo castello come una "nuova costruzione" più che una riedificazione.

Le trasformazioni cominciarono nel 1370 per volere di Galeazzo II e furono inerenti sia al castello che al borgo.

Gli inserimenti più importanti furono i rivellini, posti sia negli ingressi al ricetto (Torre d'ingresso e Castellana) che alla rocca (Torre d'ingresso e Torre Mirabella); vennero quindi trasformati i caratteri stilistici e gli elementi compositivi della fortezza.

Le mura esterne, su tutto il perimetro, vennero integralmente rivestite di nuovi mattoni, il che conferisce una certa omogeneità all'intero impianto castellano.

Nel centro della rocca venne innalzata una torre o mastio con il duplice scopo di immagazzinare munizioni e viveri e anche di estrema difesa del castellano nell'evenienza che il castello e la guarnigione, cedendo all'attacco nemico, lo costringessero a rifugiarsi in posizioni sempre più arretrate.

Dal "maschio" si aveva la possibilità, tramite vie sotterranee, di portarsi al di fuori della rocca, a sud, in corrispondenza del rivellino, e da questo collegarsi ad almeno due delle torri agli angoli della rocca .

Per quanto riguarda il borgo, venne ampliato a seguito della donazione di Galeazzo II del 1373 alla consorte Bianca di Savoia, la quale dotò il Comune degli speciali Statuti.

Da questo documento appare evidente la volontà di favorire lo sviluppo del borgo, anche ad opera dei privati, favorendo loro l'acquisto, a prezzi convenzionati, dei materiali da costruzione, escluso il legname che veniva fornito gratuitamente; agevolazioni fornite allo scopo di raggiungere in breve tempo il fine preposto.

L'ampliamento del borgo seguì la regolare distribuzione degli isolati e l'ampiezza delle vie interne, che caratterizzavano la preesistente impostazione del Barbarossa.

Tutto il borgo venne dotato di mura merlate con fossato e terraggio interno, ed in corrispondenza degli ingressi le porte vennero ulteriormente protette da saracinesche.

The history of the Castello di Rivalta
The first news on the existence of the Rivalta Castle seems to date back to an 1025 purchase act.

in the XNUMX as evidenced in the documents of the time, the emperor Henry II gives a part of the manor to the monastery of San Savino in Piacenza.

Thirty years later the rest of the structure is sold to the same monastery, which, thanks to this acquisition, gained in richness and importance.

The Castle of Rivalta

Palazzo Farnese is a palace in Piacenza, northern Italy.
This large partly constructed palace is located on the banks of the River Po in the city of Piacenza in Northern Italy. In 1556, Ottavio Farnese, Duke of Castro and of Parma, also became Duke of Piacenza and initially set up his court there. Ottavio decided on a residence in the city possibly because he could feel more secure due to the presence of a Spanish garrison.

The palace was commissioned by Ottavio's wife, Margaret of Austria, daughter of Emperor Charles V. The new edifice was erected over a former fortress built by the Visconti in 1352, part of which can still be seen.

An initial design was made by Francesco Paciotto, from Urbino, and in 1558, the architect Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola, better known as Vignola, was brought in to revise the designs. Vignola had already been commissioned to design the Villa Farnese at Caprarola (Latium) for Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, the older brother of the Duke. Vignola had to take Piacotto's design into account but significantly revised the design which was presented to the patrons in 1561. The drawings are for a vast palace on a scale paralleled only by the Vatican Palace in Italy; the rectangular plan is circa 111 metres by 88 metres. The building works were entrusted to Giovanni Bernardo Della Valle, Giovanni Lavezzari and Bernardo Panizzari (Caramosino). The actual construction, however, made up only less than a half of Vignola's original project and lacked many of the planned architectural features; missing elements include part of the exterior surrounding walls, the main façade modelled on the ancient triumphal arch and with a large tower, and a theater in the large inner courtyard. The expenditure of such a large palace plus the political machinations of the Piacentine nobility may have caused Ottavio not to complete the building and instead move his court from Piacenza to Parma. The construction of this partly built palace was completed in 1602, under Duke Ranuccio I.
After the death of the last Farnese duke in 1731, the palace fell into disrepair. Restoration began only in the early 20th century and today the Palazzo Farnese at Piacenza houses an important series of museums and exhibitions.

Ducal Chapel
The Ducal Chapel (Cappella Ducale or Cappella Grande) was used by the family for its religious rites. It is a hall on a square plan, turned into an octagon by the introduction of four apses at the corners. The sides have the same length as the chapel's height up to the hemispherical dome. The chapel is decorated with lilies from the Farnese coat of arms and Mannerist masks portraying angels. Other symbols referring to the Ducal family such as the unicorn, starfish, dolphins and turtles, appear in the large frieze.
