The Castle of Montalbano Elicona was built to control the trade and traffic between the Peloritani and the Nebrodi Mountains.
The castle consists of two parts, the oldest and higher part with rectangular towers, is most probably of Norman origin, while the lower part dates to the Aragonese period. The Aragonese part can be accessed in tow ways, via the east entrance which is surmoounted by a large pointed arch, and via the main entrance in Via Castello.
Once entered you'll see the great courtyard with the tank, the outer scale, the palace chapel and the octagonal dome.
The west wing once housed the prison, while a basement room in the east wing now houses the Museum of Weapons. The north wing is used today for various exhibitions. From the top of the castle you can enjoy a breathtaking view.
