Monastero Bormida is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Asti in the Italian region Piedmont. It is located about 70 kilometres (43 mi) southeast of Turin and about 30 kilometres (19 mi) southeast of Asti.

Monastero Bormida borders the following municipalities: Bistagno, Bubbio, Cassinasco, Denice, Loazzolo, Ponti, Roccaverano, and Sessame. It is home to a castle, located near the Bormida river, which originated as an abbey founded around 1050 (whence the town's name), and which has mosaics and frescoes in the interior. There is also a Romanesque bridge crossing the same river.

The Burio Castle is the second largest manor costigliolese territory. From an architectural point of view it presents typical forms of medieval fortifications Asti. 

Over the centuries gradually lost its original military vocation, becoming exclusively a center of administration of the surrounding estates. After falling into neglect, it has been restored since 1980 by the current owners. 

Asti was owned by several families, among which should be mentioned the Lanzavecchia. It became a private dwelling is used as a place of cultural and artistic events.

The Burio Castle 

Surrounded by a large park, the Costigliole Castle (Castello di Costigliole d’Asti) dominates the town. It was built during the 14th and 15th centuries and only later was it restructured to its present Gothic-like form. Property of the Marquis Filippo Asinari, a politician and refined wine connoisseur, the manor was the home of the Countess of Castiglione who was clever in politics and in relationships and was considered one of the century’s most beautiful women. Since 1994, the castle has been the seat of the Cultural Park of the Grinzane Cavour Prize which, with the support of the Piedmont Region, works to promote all aspects of the territory, developing debate between concrete culture and literature. The castle also houses a National Museum of the Territory, intended as a place to promote the literary, historical, architectural, and anthropological heritage of southern Piedmont. City owned, it houses an international cooking school and, every year, the “the Barbera auction”, which, at this point, has become a not-to-be-missed event for wine lovers.

The Costigliole Castle (Castello di Costigliole d’Asti)

The castle was one of the many residences of the Savoia from 1792 to 1870 it is now a palace of the town. This palace perched on a hill had the antecedent a medieval fortress. At the end of the seventeenth century. the Solaro family commissioned Guarino Guarini to enlarge the castle and embellish it, but works were not carried out. A century later, the architect Benedetto Alfieri resumed the designs of Guarini and led the futures work. The Savoia acquired the palace in 1792 and became one of their summer residences. In the early nineteenth century., King Carlo Felice and his wife Maria Christina transformed the palace on their own plans. The building has a theatrical honor entrance, with its double staircase, its beautiful reliefs and atlases from the palace gardens of the Venaria Reale. It contains beautiful rooms, especially the rooms decorated with beautiful wallpapers "Chinese". The ballroom is decorated with frescoes by Luigi Vacca and Fabrizio Sevesi telling the mythological episode of Niobe. It is also realized that the frescoes in trompe-l'oeil of the grand salon, which give the impression of the presence of statues.
