The Castello di Lombardia ("Lombardy Castle") is a castle in Enna, Sicily. It is one of the largest and most ancient edifices in Italy, with an area of some 26,000 m2 (280,000 sq ft).
History
The castle's origins are related to a fortress erected in the 1st millennium BC by the Sicani on the foundation of the ancient Henna, on a hill 970 m above sea level. It remained a key possession in the subsequent history of the island, and the Romans were able to conquer it only by passing through its sewer network.

Under the castle was the ancient Sican temple of Ceres, site of the widespread cult of that goddess in the whole of Italy, which was described by Cicero.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, it was used by the Byzantines and resisted Arab assaults for many years. After their victory, the latter rebuilt the fortress around the 10th century; the castle was also used by their successors in Sicily, the Normans. Two centuries later, architect Richard of Lentini was commissioned by Frederick II, Emperor and King of Sicily, to restore it as a summer residence. He added 20 towers and called in a garrison coming from the Langobardia minor (Calabria), whence the castle's name.

With the advent of the artillery, the castle lost its primary strategic role and was turned into a prison. In the 20th and early 21st century, the castle was the site of the Teatro più vicino alle Stelle ("The Nearest Theatre to the Stars"), used for opera and pop music concerts. The castle is now open to the public.

Il castello dei Gresti o di Pietratagliata si trova in territorio di Aidone, appunto in contrada Gresti, quasi al centro del triangolo che unisce Aidone, Valguarnera e Raddusa. La sua condizione attuale è quella di rudere se pur ben leggibile nelle forme, che sono costituite principalmente di una poderosa torre piena e di una serie di stanze ingrottate. La sua origine non è ben definita, le prime notizie storiche documentabili risalgono al XIV secolo. I ruderi del castello sono tuttora di proprietà privata e da molti decenni lasciati all'incuria e all'abbandono.
Il castello sorge su un'elevata cresta rocciosa di natura arenitica, che per due km, in direzione NE-SO, affiora nella vallata del Gornalunga. Nella parte centrale, lo sperone più alto, posto a cavallo del torrente Canne o Gresti a cui fa da diga naturale, è stato utilizzato dall'uomo per la sua posizione strategica come postazione di controllo e difesa. Infatti il castello costituisce un avamposto o una fortezza di avvistamento per il controllo di un vasto territorio, connotato dalle importanti vie di comunicazioni che dalla costa orientale (Catania, Siracusa, Lentini, Naxos...) si addentravano verso il centro della Sicilia dominato da insediamenti quali Morgantina, Enna, Agira. Il castello con qualche difficoltà è raggiungibile da Aidone percorrendo la SS 288, in direzione Catania, per circa 15 km, dopodiché ci si inoltra nella Strada Provinciale per Valguarnera che si percorre per 10 km circa.

Il nome e la storia
Il castello è conosciuto con entrambi i nomi. La denominazione "Pietratagliata", che si riferisce certamente alla presenza degli ambienti tagliati nella roccia, è già testimoniata nei documenti in epoca medievale, quando viene citato il feudo di Fessinia o di Pietratagliata. La tradizione popolare lo conosce con il nome "castello dei Gresti" (in dialetto: u castedd' î Grest), probabilmente per la sua vicinanza con il Cozzo dei Gresti, un modesto rilievo sul quale in età greco-romana era sorto un insediamento, testimoniato dai numerossissimi cocci ceramici emergenti, che diedero appunto il nome al sito (cocci, in dialetto "gresti"). Per la posizione strategica è indubbio che il sito sia stato abitato fin dai tempi più remoti; la struttura esistente è certamente[senza fonte] di epoca arabo-normanna, ma nei documenti appare per la prima volta nel 1374, quando il feudo ed il fortilizio di Pietratagliata viene assegnato da Federico III di Sicilia, con un privilegio, a Perronus de Iuenio (Gioeni). Fino al 1512 Giovanni Luca Barberi, nei suoi Capibrevi ne conferma l'appartenenza alla famiglia Gioeni, già concessionaria della terra di Aidone e dei feudi circostanti. In seguito passò a vari proprietari tra cui il barone Caprini che nel 1668 fece incidere sull'architrave di una finestra ogivale, su una lastra di marmo, un'epigrafe in latino. Non c'è traccia oggi dell'epigrafe, ne conosciamo il testo per opera del Magno, che nel suo libro, citato, racconta di averla letta dopo essersi munito di binocolo. Questo il testo dell'epigrafe (secondo la traduzione dello stesso Magno), una dedica del Caprini ad un suo giovane successore, forse il figlio, a cui lascia questi terreni fertili e ricchi, ma arsi dal sole e privi delle delizie del giardino delle Esperidi:

«A Dio Ottimo Massimo o giovinetto, al quale queste cose appartengono per diritto (di discendenza) di Giacomo Caprini, il quale ne è il barone e qui risplende col suo antico stemma, ti avanza. Tu godrai non dell'orto delle Esperidi, ma dei feudi, del pingue armento di lui e del gregge pascolante. Felice te, o giovinetto, che ti pasci di aura celeste nella casa del grande eroe piena di abbondanza. Anno del Signore 1668»

Castello di Pietratagliata

The origins of the Castle of Pietrarossa of Caltanissetta remain unknown. It is presumed to have been built in the 9th century, but there are some historians who claim that it was built by the Sicani, a people that was present in Sicily in the 8th century before the arrival of the Greeks. The castle is towering over the whole valley of the  river Salso.

Throughout history some historical events took place, in 1378 an important meeting of the Sicilian barons was held during which 4 were appointed vicars to govern Sicily. Around 1570, a strong earthquake destroyed most of the castle, today there are only two towers left.

The view that you can admire from this castle is spectacular although today the castle is in a state of disrepair. So be very careful when visiting.

Castello di Pietrarossa

Sperlinga is a comune in the province of Enna, in the central part of the island of Sicily, in southern Italy. It is one of I Borghi più belli d'Italia ("the prettiest villages in Italy")
Geography
Sperlinga is at about 750 m above sea level, on a hill on the southern slopes of the Nebrodi mountains It has a number of troglodyte dwellings.The village is dominated by a large mediaeval castle, dating from late Norman times.

At the end of 2014 the population was 819 people, in 344 families.

History
The village is first mentioned (as "Sperlingua") in a privilege of the Norman Count Roger from 1082.:542 The first information on the castle is from 1113, and the earliest direct reference to it from 1239.

Sperlinga reputedly did not participate in the Sicilian Vespers, the bloody uprising against the Angevin French rulers of Sicily in 1282, and may have offered them protection. An inscription over a door of the castle formerly read quod Siculis placuit sola Sperlinga negavit, or roughly "what pleased the Sicilians, only Sperlinga denied".

From about 1360 Sperlinga was held by the Ventimiglia family.:542 In 1597 it was sold for 30,834 ounces of gold to Giovanni Natoli,:542 who was granted a licentia populandi or "licence to populate" by the king of Sicily, Philip II of Spain,and was made Prince of Sperlinga in 1627.[6]:542 His son Francesco sold Sperlinga in 1656 to Giovanni Stefano Oneto, but retained the princely title. Oneto was made Duke of Sperlinga in 1666 by Charles II of Spain.:542

During the Allied invasion of Sicily, in the Second World War, Allied forces under General Allen, including American infantry and tank units and Moroccan Goumiers, moved past Sperlinga to envelop Nicosia, a few kilometres to the south. They met strong resistance. After a show of force by American tanks, the Axis forces withdrew from Sperlinga and Nicosia during the night of 27 July 1943. Units of the American 16th Infantry Regiment entered Sperlinga the next morning.
