A castle with crenellated walls and towers. Built for the medieval emperor and King of Sicily Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor, it was built in Prato, Italy on top of a previous fortification of which two towers remain.

When Frederick II died building was stopped and the interior was never finished. The castle is open to the public and although some destruction took place during the fascist regime, reconstruction work has begun and is ongoing. It is possible to climb the stairs up to the top of the castle walls and walkways for a bird's eye view over the surrounding city of Prato.

It was built between 1237 and 1247 by Riccardo da Lentini.

Il castello di Calenzano è un'antica struttura fortificata nonché nucleo originario dell'insediamento di Calenzano, sulla via che da Firenze porta uno dei passi appenninici per l'Emilia.
Le origini
Il borgo conserva ancora oggi l'aspetto caratteristico del villaggio fortificato, con schema a pianta ovale, tipico dei centri di collina. Posto su una collinetta isolata, situata nel punto dove la valle del torrente Marina si apre verso la piana fiorentina, è visibile dai quattro punti cardinali e sorvegliava in passato le vie di comunicazione che portavano in Mugello. Il primo incastellamento della collina di Calenzano si deve molto probabilmente alla potente famiglia comitale dei Guidi. Il nucleo originario del castello assunse nel XII secolo una notevole importanza strategica, situato com'era al confine tra due diocesi, quella di Firenze e Pistoia (Prato lo diventerà solo nel 1653) e i domini feudali dei già citati Guidi, dei conti Alberti, che controllavano la Val di Bisenzio, e degli Ubaldini, signori ghibellini del Mugello. Risalgono al XIII secolo le prime menzioni di Calenzano inteso come “castello”. Ne troviamo traccia nel Libro di Montaperti del 1260[1] e nel Libro degli Estimi del 1269. In questa seconda fonte in particolare si descrivono i danni subiti dai guelfi di Firenze dopo la sconfitta nella battaglia di Montaperti ad opera dei ghibellini, i quali provocarono ingenti distruzioni anche al castello di Calenzano.

Dai Guidi il castello passò sotto la giurisdizione del vescovo di Firenze e infine agli inizi del '300 divenne possesso della Repubblica di Firenze. È interessante notare che altri tre castelli erano dislocati lungo la Val di Marina: quello di Combiate, presso il Passo delle Croci, di cui non resta traccia, difendeva l'accesso alla piana da nord; quello di Legri, già possesso dei conti Guidi poi dei Figiovanni e dei Cattani-Cavalcanti, restaurato in anni recenti in stile neogotico è oggi residenza privata; e il castello di Travalle, anch'esso antico feudo dei Guidi. La proprietà di quest'ultimo, divisa tra i Tosinghi e i Lamberti, fu acquistata dal Comune di Firenze nel 1225. Passato quindi all'antica famiglia dei Corbinelli, a loro rimase per tutto il '600. Da allora il “castellaccio” di Travalle, come viene chiamato, costituisce uno dei poderi della grande villa fattoria prima degli Strozzi Alamanni, poi dei Ganucci Cancellieri. Ai castelli si affiancavano nel controllo del territorio numerose torri d'avvistamento, come la torre di Collina e la “Torraccia” o la torre di Baroncoli.

Il '300. Tre assedi in meno di quaranta anni
Il fatto storico più rilevante che riguarda il castello avvenne la notte tra il 4 e il 5 ottobre 1325, quando le milizie ghibelline del condottiero lucchese Castruccio Castracani, reduci dalla vittoriosa battaglia di Altopascio, attaccarono e incendiarono le fortificazioni senza incontrare resistenza durante la loro avanzata su Firenze. In quel secolo di guerre continue che fu il '300, Calenzano subì nuovamente gravi devastazioni. Nel 1351 fu assediato e danneggiato dalle truppe dei Visconti di Milano guidate da Giovanni di Oleggio. A quel punto la Repubblica fiorentina, consapevole di non poter rinunciare a una roccaforte che era la vera porta d'accesso alla piana fiorentina da ovest, decise di prendere provvedimenti. Le strutture difensive furono consolidate e ampliate, facendo assumere alla cerchia muraria la conformazione che conserverà per i secoli a venire. Questi dispendiosi lavori si dimostrarono efficaci quando nel 1363 i pisani, fiancheggiati dai mercenari inglesi di Giovanni Acuto, imperversarono per il contado di Firenze, depredando e saccheggiando. Le mura del castello resistettero e fornirono riparo anche agli abitanti della vicina Sesto. In quello stesso anno il Comune di Firenze deliberò un ulteriore rafforzamento delle opere di difesa e decretò il divieto assoluto per gli abitanti, pena una multa di 1000 libbre di fiorini piccoli, di costruire o abitare case o capanne addossate alle mura del castello o in un perimetro di 200 braccia intorno ad esse.
Tra gli ultimi decenni del '300 e i primi del'400 il castello di Calenzano raggiunse l'apice del suo splendore, sia a livello economico che militare. Ma come spesso accade, dopo il massimo momento di gloria arriva, seppur lentamente, il declino. Dopo che la Repubblica fiorentina ebbe esteso e consolidato i suoi domini in Toscana il castello di Calenzano perse l'importanza strategica che aveva acquisito nei secoli precedenti e da avamposto militare si trasformò progressivamente in centro abitativo a carattere agricolo. Già nel 1452 la magistratura dei Dieci di Balia dovette prendere provvedimenti per far riparare nuovamente le strutture difensive. "Rimaste così ferme per i secoli a venire, nella loro configurazione tipicamente medievale, le mura di Calenzano ebbero da respingere solo gli assalti del tempo, che portava la rovina delle pietre, e quelli abbastanza modesti per la verità, degli uomini che costruivano sopra le mura".

Nel 1512 Calenzano non fu toccato per sua fortuna dalle truppe papaline e dai mercenari spagnoli autori del famoso Sacco di Prato, che misero a ferro e fuoco anche Campi Bisenzio. In quel tragico frangente che fu l'assedio di Firenze del 1529-1530 sappiamo che il castello venne usato come piazzaforte militare nel contado senza tuttavia subire danni: "si tenne per fortezza et ne fu commissario Agnolo Anselmi, cittadino fiorentino". Se, come abbiamo visto, l'importanza militare del borgo fortificato era già diminuita nel secolo precedente, il castello di Calenzano dopo la proclamazione del Granducato sotto Cosimo I, perse definitivamente ogni rilevanza strategica. Le torri vennero affittate a privati che ne fecero abitazioni, mentre i terreni furono usati a scopi agricoli.

Castello di Calenzano

On a hill in the Val di Bisenzio, between Usella and Carmignanello in the municipality of Cantagallo, sits the imposing Rocca di Cerbaia, whose name comes from the presence of deer, or cervi, in the area.

Its origins probably date to the 12th century: the tower was given by Federico Barbarossa to the Alberti counts, who made it the cornerstone of their defenses along the road leading to Lombardy.

Between the 12th and 13th centuries, the Rocca, or fortress, was used by the Rabbiosi counts as a bastion during the conflict for control of the territory against the Republic of Prato. The result of the fighting was the elimination of the feudal system in this area and the gradual distancing of the Alberti from Prato and the Val di Bisenzio.

The fortress was not only a tool for war, however, but it was also where the noblewoman Cunizza da Romano lived, who Dante wrote about in his Divine Comedy. She spent her final years recounting the memories of her adventurous life. According to an old myth, it is said that Dante Alighieri, fleeing Florence in 1285, arrived one cold night at the castle seeking refuge, but was denied entry.

The fortress, made from unevenly set local sandstone, still retains its two perimeter walls: the first lower-lying wall includes a doorway that leads to the remains of a medieval apsidal chapel, whereas the other wall features a barrel-covered tank and service rooms. The remains of a tap are found in the central core.

The last Count of Cerbaia was Niccolò d'Aghinolfo, who the Florentine Republic paid 6,200 gold fiorini to for the fortress. In the 15th century, it was almost knocked down, but in 1512, the podestà in Prato used it again to defend the city from Spanish troops. It was handed over to the local, noble Novellucci family in the 17th century, becoming part of their Gricignana estate, before it was purchased by the Edlmanns in the 19th century. Today, it is owned by the municipality of Cantagallo.

Rocca di Cerbaia

Il castello di Larciano è un monumento di Larciano (Pistoia).

Si tratta di una fortificazione che sorge sulle pendici del Montalbano, utilizzata dai pistoiesi nel medioevo come torre di avvistamento. Dalla cima della maniero, infatti, poteva essere osservato chiaramente il castello di Cecina di Larciano, e, da questo, quelli di Montevettolini e di Monsummano, via via fino al forte di Serravalle Pistoiese, quest'ultimo posto sul colle a cavallo fra la Valdinievole e la piana di Firenze, Prato e Pistoia.

Oggi, la torre ospita il Museo Civico Archeologico di Larciano Castello.

Castello di Larciano

Il castello di Vilanova si trova in località Le Maschere-Strada della Futa, nel comune di Barberino di Mugello (FI).
Storia e descrizione
Fu un possesso dei nobili Ubaldini chiamati da Villanova, intorno al 1250, ed in seguito della famiglia de' Bettini, ramo degli Ubaldini. È raffigurato, nelle Piante di Popoli e Strade dei Capitani di Parte Guelfa, rilevazione condotta fra il 1582 e il 1586, come una piccola cerchia di mura con porta sovrastata da una torre e un edificio. Si può ipotizzare che l'edificio ospitasse una comunità di un certo rilievo, visto che dentro le mura esisteva anche una Compagnia e la chiesa di San Jacopo.

Nello statuto della Potesteria di Barberino di Mugello (1563) si legge che uno dei consiglieri della Borsa del Consiglio proveniva dal comune di Villanova; incarico di una certa importanza poiché nelle competenze del Consiglio rientravano le normative che regolavano le transazioni economiche della comunità.

La chiesa di San Jacopo, riedificata nel 1334, sotto il patronato dei nobili Cattani, venne annessa dall'arcivescovo di Firenze alla curia di Santa Maria a Colle Barucci nel Piviere di san Giovanni a Petrojo nel 1565. Chiesa e castello furono acquistati nel 1611 dal marchese Ottavio Gerini e compresi nella tenuta e parco della Villa Le Maschere, una delle più vaste ville campestri della provincia del Mugello.

Su parte dei ruderi fu probabilmente edificato l'attuale ottocentesco castello, ricostruito con architettura medioevale di Carlo Gerini e adibito a scuola e convento. Il primo restauro della torre con la porta e la scalinata è stato effettuato nel 1990 per evitare il progressivo deterioramento e la probabile perdita. Il castello ed il parco sono stati oggetto di un piano di recupero volto alla trasformazione ad uso di ristorante e locale per cerimonie o banchetti.

Castello di Villanova 

Vincigliata Castle (Italian: Castello di Vincigliata) is a medieval castle which stands on a rocky hill to the east of Fiesole in the Italian region of Tuscany. In the mid-nineteenth century the building, which had fallen into a ruinous state, was acquired by the Englishman John Temple-Leader and entirely reconstructed in the feudal style.

Between 1941 and 1943 it served as a small prisoner-of-war camp known as Castello di Vincigliata Campo P.G. 12. It housed some high-ranking British and Commonwealth officers, including Major-General Sir Adrian Carton de Wiart, who was employed by the Italian government in the Armistice negotiations with the Allies in 1943.
Original castle
The 13th-century castle located on a hill north of Florence close to Fiesole is medieval in origin. It was once the ancient stronghold of the Visdomini family, important Florentine nobility since the 11th century. They enjoyed special privileges from the Florentine bishops. A son of the family John Gualbert, a Benedictine monk, was canonized in 1193 by Pope Celestine III. The property then passed to the Usimbardi family, (which introduced glass production to Florence) followed by the Ceffini of Figline.

They soon sold it to the Buonaccorsi banking family. In the general crash of Florentine banks in 1345 (bad debts by King Edward III of England for his Battle of Crécy and Battle of Poitiers (1356) campaigns) it was purchased by Niccolo, son of Ugo degli Albizi, a wealthy mercantile family. A branch of this family, for reasons of political expediency renamed Alessandri, occupied the castle for some three hundred years.

After the fall of the Republic, the Alessandri family still kept up their palace in the city, but the castle was allowed to drift into decay, till by the year 1637 only the Lord Francesco lived there with a 10-year-old son, Giovani Antonio, and a maiden aunt of 70. The ruins and land were sold in 1827 to Lorenzo di Bartolommeo Galli da Rovezzano  They became a source of interest to writers and artists during the romantic era, as evidenced by an Emilio Burci sketch dated 1836.
John Temple-Leader
John Temple-Leader , as a young Whig politician, suddenly abandoned a parliamentary career for the continent. In the early 1840s after several years in Cannes, he moved to Florence, taking a house in the Piazza Pitti. He became a friend of Georgio Barbera, a Florentine publisher and supporter of the unification of Italy. Later he purchased Fiesole's Villa di Maiano and joined Tuscany's sizeable English expatriate community. Whilst exploring the hills of Fiesole, the Englishman came upon the overgrown ruin of Castello di Vincigliata. He fell in love with it and decided to restore it to its former glory.

Over 15 years, the castlewas reconstructed in the neo-Gothic style from the ground up. With the help of a young architect, Giuseppe Fancelli, it became a romantic vision of a feudal fortress. He also bought the surrounding land, more than seven hundred acres in the space of fifty years, began the delicate task of reclaiming it and restoring the houses and villas. He created the Bosco di Vincigliata, planting cypresses in the rocky areas where nothing else would grow, with pines and all the various shrubs and bushes one finds in a typical central Italian woodland; in short, an English romantic garden on a huge scale. People flocked from afar to visit his castle and admire the grounds, and he was extremely pleased when The Illustrated London News printed an engraving of Queen Victoria doing a watercolour of the Giardino delle Colonne, a pretty pool fed by the Mensola creek, during her visit in 1893.

Henry James wrote of the castle: "This elaborate piece of imitation has no superficial use; but, even if it were less complete, less successful, less brilliant, I should feel a reflective kindness for it. So handsome a piece of work is its own justification; it belongs to the heroics of culture."

The gate of the castello is flanked by two stone lions and leads into an Italian garden with a fountain and a sunken cloister. Originally there were many Gaetano Bianchi (1819–1892) frescoes of scenes from the lives of the various families that owned Vincigliata, but only one has survived, Ugolino de'Visdomini invoking the Virgin before marching against the Sienese. In 1889 he published the definitive record on Sir John Hawkwood, an English mercenary (or condottiero) active in 14th-century Italy. Sir John married late in life and died in Florence in 1903, without heirs. He left all his properties, including the Castello di Vincigliata to his great nephew Richard Luttrell Pilkington Bethell, 3rd Baron Westbury, who sold it off piecemeal, and his art collection was scattered.



Vincigliata Castle

The construction of the fortress, at the request of the Medici, was begun on June 30, 1569 but the final layout of this imposing structure is the work of Bernardo Buontalenti who probably completed it in the last decade of the 16th century. 
It is characterized by seven bastions that stand at intervals along the irregular walled confines. The fort is almost a mile long and at its most dominant position stands the mastio (Tuscan for male) known as the knight on a horse.

Inside the fortress we find the quarters of the castellan and those of the garrison, which, along with the chapel, made up the actual defensive core of the fort. 
In one of the castellan's rooms we can still admire a 16th century fireplace with a monumental Medici coat of arms. 
The fort holds vast subterranean vaults – among which we find what seems to be a passageway that led to the Sieve River and could be run on horseback – cisterns, warehouses, casemates, arms and munitions deposits, foundries for cannons and wind mills.

 
It was constructed to function as an important war machine but was never used for this purpose; it did, however, act as an exceptionally strategic deterrent.

It is now being restored.

San Martino Fortress

Il castello di Bisarno è un edificio storico di Firenze, situato in via di Badia a Ripoli, vicino alla chiesa di San Piero in Palco.
Storia e descrizione
Ebbe origine come fortilizio duecentesco, situato nella zona delle "lame", i rigagnoli e fossi confluenti all'Arno, che dovevano formare una variante del letto del fiume detta appunto "Bisarno".

A metà del Trecento apparteneva ai Bardi, e di quell'epoca restano alcune decorazioni interne a motivi geometrici e floreali, oltre ad alcuni pilastri ottagonali in pietra che spuntano da alcune pareti e alcuni soffitti lignei a travi su mensole di quercia.

Poi passò ai Biliotti e, nel Cinquecento, ai Capponi (il cui stemma si vede sulla cancellata), che intrapresero importanti lavori di ampliamento e ammodernamento.

Dotato di una merlatura di tipo guelfo, in parte originale e in parte di restauro, il castello venne abitato dallo scienziato ed esploratore Odoardo Beccari, che vi impiantò alcune essenze rare ancora esistenti. Dal 1869 al 1880 fu sede dell'ambasciatore inglese James Hudson.



Castello di Bisarno

The Rocca Nuova watch over the village of Serravalle Pistoiese from above.

A fortification built in the 1300s after a long battle between Lucca and Florence, allies, and Pistoia.

It was the people of Lucca who managed to conquer this fortification, and then they rebuilt it.

The castle was built to keep the population of the village under control from above thanks to its walls and tower.

The Lucca people, in fact, they were afraid that the inhabitants would have rebelled to return under the control of Pistoia.

On the opposite side of the village there is a tower, this and the Rocca Nuova, in fact, were connected to each other by an internal walkway for the guards that guarded the walls.

Serravalle is a village with a medieval setting and the existence of the fortress dates back to 1100.

The castle has two bastions with a square base at the corners and a very nice hexagonal tower renovated in the 90s.

Paying attention, one of the ramparts of the fortress is still accessible.

The remains of the fortress and of the tower make unique the town of Serravalle which still preserves so much history and so much charm.

Rocca Nuova

Il castello di Montalbano, o rocca Tedalda, è un monumento medievale fiorentino, radicalmente modificato nel corso dei secoli, situato sulla sponda destra dell'Arno, nella zona di Rovezzano.
Origine del nome
Il primo nome del castello di Montalbano fu rocca de' Tedaldi, in quanto apparteneva alla nobile famiglia fiesolana dei Tedaldi ed aveva l'aspetto di una tipica roccaforte medievale. Dal suo antico nome prende origine una delle strade principali della zona, che arriva proprio in prossimità dell'edificio. Solo successivamente venne chiamato castello di Montalbano, anche in seguito alle profonde modificazioni avvenute nel corso della sua lunga storia. Tale appellativo è indubbiamente riferito al colle su cui giace (e da cui prende nome anche la via che conduce proprio al suo ingresso). Tale colle è, infatti, rivolto verso est, quindi il sole sorge alle sue spalle (monte Albano, il monte dell'alba). Nel corso del '900 è stato chiamato anche villa di Montalbano, sebbene l'epiteto di castello sia quello che, ancora, gli si addice di più.

Castello di Montegufoni History
The Castle of Montefugoni is located in the Chianti area, not far from Florence and in a perfect position to reach Pisa, Siena, Arezzo and San Gimignano. Built in the post-Carolingian period by the noble family of the Ormanni family mentioned by Dante Alighieri in the Divine Comedy.

In 1135, the Florentines attacked the castle for the first time, attempting to raze it to the ground. The building was left in ruins until the thirteenth century when it became property of the Acciaioli family, in the person of Gugliarello Acciaioli. His descendants grew enormously thanks to the bank they owned and towards the end of the 13th century, Montegufoni has now become a complex consisting of the central building and seven smaller buildings surrounded by walls: the so-called seven old villas of the ancestral castle of Montegufoni mentioned in an inscription of the castle.

In 1310 Niccolò Acciaioli was born here in a room of the castle, later transformed into a chapel. He later became the Great Seneschal of the Kingdom of Naples and a close friend of Boccaccio and Petrarch. In 1348, the king of Naples Luigi di Taranto, removed from his reign following the conflict with the King of Hungary, took refuge with his prime minister in Montegufoni. He used to banquet with the bishop Angelo Acciaiuoli in the Banquets hall, which overlooks the part of the castle, now called the Cortile dei Duchi.

In 1386 by Donato Acciaioli, a person who possessed the titles of Duke of Athens, Senator of Rome and Gonfalonier of the Republic of Florence, the tower was built that still dominates the castle. In 1396, Donato was banned from Florence, but his assets were saved from his cardinal brother's confiscation. The three sons of Donato resided at the Court of Athens until one of them, Agnolo di Jacopo, returned to Montegufoni with his son (the Duke Francesco) and his cousin (it is in that period that the appellative Court of the Dukes).

In 1546, another Donato restored the tower on the model of the Tower of Arnolfo of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence and built the arms room (today called the Gallery) and in this period Montegufoni became the meeting point of many Florentine artists. In 1612, Cosimo II de 'Medici was invited to Montegufoni.

Around 1650, Donato with his wife Anna Maria Altoviti restored the whole castle, giving it the appearance that it still maintains, connecting the seven buildings until then distinct. The castle continues to be one of the most celebrated haunts of Florentine high society throughout the seventeenth century and also during the eighteenth century, until the economic decline of the Acciaioli family, who sells it to the Baracchi family.

In 1909, Sir George Sitwell, an eccentric Englishman, falls in love with the splendid structure of Montegufoni and decides to buy it in the name of his son Sir Osbert Sitwell. After becoming its owner Sitwell begins to enrich and beautify the castle. In 1922 he called to decorate the castle Gino Severini, who created a series of frescoes.

During the Second World War, to prevent them from being stolen, works of art were hidden in Montegufoni such as the Adoration of the Magi by Domenico Ghirlandaio, the Primavera by Sandro Botticelli and the Madonna di Ognissanti by Giotto.

Sir Osbert Sitwell lived there until 1969 when he died and in 1972 he was finally bought by the current owners, the Posarelli family, who began to restore it to make it a luxurious vacation spot.

The Castle of Montefugoni is located in the middle of a vast estate cultivated with vineyards and olive trees, harmoniously integrating itself into nature in perfect balance between architecture and landscape. After passing the majestic facade, the central courtyard immediately transmits a sense of severe austerity, but soon passing through the halls illuminated by the large windows, in the sloping gardens, in the sequence of rooms, one lives a shining and delicate sense of life, until it flows, in the great eighteenth-century salon, in a more refined and light atmosphere.
