The “Castello della Colombaia” is an ancient building located near the port of Trapani.

It’s characterized by the main tower of 32 meters high, composed of four floor.

Above all, it’s one of the best examples of military architecture in Sicily.

Some legends trace the origin of the castle to the presence of the Trojan exiles in the city, but the actual fortification was erected around the 2nd century BC, at the end of the First Punic War.

The Bourbons wanted it as a prison, and such remained until 1965.

Otherwise it followed years of abandonment, which deteriorated the structure.

Recently it has been restored.

Nowadays thanks to the contribution of the association  “Save the Colombaia”, through a small boat can be reached and visited inside.

Moreover it’s possible to make a “trip back in time”, where you can look out from the watchtower and admire the weapons, the cells and the open areas where the prisoners used to get some air or have a wash.

Ligny Tower (Italian: Torre di Ligny, Sicilian: Turrignì) is a coastal watchtower in Trapani, Sicily. It was built between 1671 and 1672 at a strategic position on the city's western coast. Today, the tower is in good condition, and it is open to the public as an archaeological museum.

History
Ligny Tower was built on a narrow strip of land on Trapani's western coast, to defend the city from attacks by the Barbary corsairs. It was named after the Viceroy of Sicily, Claude Lamoral, 3rd Prince of Ligne, who had ordered its construction. The tower was designed by the Flemish architect Carlos de Grunenbergh. It has a square base with scarped walls, with four corner turrets which originally contained lanterns.

The tower was proposed in a meeting held at Palermo on 11 January 1670. Construction began in 1671, and it was inaugurated in October 1672.

A passage connecting the tower with the mainland was built in 1806, and guns were installed on the tower's roof until 1862. It was subsequently used as a semaphore station, but it was eventually abandoned.

In World War II, the tower was used by the Regia Marina and was armed with anti-aircraft guns.

Present day
The tower was restored in 1979 by the architect Francesco Terranova. Since 1983, the tower has been an archaeological museum, known as Museo civico Torre di Ligny.

Ligny Tower

Situated on top of Mount Erice, in Erice in the province of Trapani, the Castle of Venus is built on the ruins of a temple, initially dedicated to the Greek Goddess Mother of natural fertility, Demeter, later identified as Venus by the Romans.
The structure of the castle dates back to the twelfth century and is the work of the Normans. Inside you can see some fragments of the ancient sanctuary and a large limestone slab with the Habsburg symbol, the egale, but also the remains of the prison, the ruins of the house of the castellan, and the remains of a bath perhaps from Roman times.

Castello di Venere

Il castello di Marsala è un castello medievale d'origine normanna. In passato è stato utilizzato come carcere.

Storia
Nell'angolo orientale della città, dove i due bracci del fossato punico si incontrano, in posizione elevata rispetto al pendio digradante cittadino, con un grande piano antistante libero da costruzioni rivolto verso la città, sorse il castello medievale. Fondato forse solo come recinto fortificato in età normanna (ma non si può escludere che in tal punti vi fosse una fortezza bizantina), venne rinforzato in età sveva, come attestano l'impianto pseudo-trapezoidale ed alcuni elementi stilistici, quali i costoloni di un ambiente della torre circolare, tipici dell'architettura federiciana. Una lettera del 1239 inviata da Lodi da Federico II di Svevia, dove si invita il giustiziere ultra Salsum (al di là del Salso) a non effettuare alcuna ristrutturazione nei castelli di Trapani, Marsala, Mazara e Sciacca, e ad affidare a cittadini fidelibus nostris la manutenzione degli stessi per impedirne la rovina, dimostra l'esistenza del Castello agli inizi del secolo XIII.

Il piano del castello era una estesa piazza verso cui confluivano due vie che lambivano le mura orientali ed altre tre vie che si inserivano nel tessuto urbano della città medievale, congiungendosi con il tessuto antico. Una di queste, a sud-ovest, l'attuale via Punica, collegava il piano con la sede dell'antica cattedrale. Prospiciente quest'ultima via era visibile fino a pochi anni fa, nell'angolo opposto al cantonale dell'abside della chiesa di San Matteo, un'apertura con mostra di bottega quattro-cinquecentesca – oggi nascosta dall'intonaco e forse non ancora manomessa – a dimostrare la vocazione mercantile della zona intorno alla cattedrale. Dal castello, oggi occupato da costruzioni ottocentesche lungo il fossato punico, era parte integrante l'odierna piazzetta Sant'Oliva. Tale nome deriva dalla tradizionale ubicazione della prigione in cui la santa, venerata anche dagli Arabi, fu rinchiusa prima della sua riduzione in cattività a Tunisi, dove venne martirizzata e sepolta forse nel luogo ove sorge la Grande Moschea (Djamaa ez Zitouma-La moschea dell'ulivo). Ciò confermerebbe la presenza nella zona del castello di una fortezza oggi scomparsa o riorganizzata in età bizantina e/o normanno-sveva.

Tuttavia è bene sottolineare che i dati dello scavo di vico Infermeria, sebbene parziali e limitati alla superficie, hanno evidenziato, in questa zona, in un periodo definito "altomedievale", la presenza di aree industriali all'aperto, cui fece seguito la costruzione di alcuni ambienti utilitaristici relativi ad abitazioni povere, addossate al muro di cinta lungo il fossato, databili a partire dalla seconda metà del secolo XII. Una di esse poteva essere una bottega artigiana che fabbricava lucerne, rimasta in uso almeno fino all'inizio del XIII secolo, quando, forse per ragioni di sicurezza, vengono abbandonate o abbattute le costruzioni addossate al muro cittadino, creando così di fatto quel vuoto intorno alla fortificazione medievale rimasto invariato almeno fino alla metà del XVIII o agli inizi del XIX.

Fino al 2009/2010, il castello medievale lilybetano ospitava la casa circondariale di Marsala - oggi chiusa, dove nel 1979 venne rinchiuso Roberto Vecchioni, accusato di spaccio di sostanze stupefacenti dal giudice istruttore di Marsala; l'accusa si riferiva ad un episodio avvenuto durante una serata alla Festa dell'Unità di Marsala, nel 1977, quando il cantautore avrebbe offerto uno spinello ad un ragazzo quattordicenne; a seguito delle ammissioni del ragazzo, Vecchioni venne arrestato e rilasciato dopo alcuni giorni. Il ragazzo in seguito ritrattò ma il processo proseguì per concludersi con la sua assoluzione; da questa vicenda personale trasse poi l'ispirazione per scrivere le canzoni "Lettera da Marsala" e "Signor giudice".
